bindweed and despair

i have an area in my clay and dust yard where there are a lot of tree roots. nothing, not lawn, not, clover, not ground cover will grow there. so i had the bright idea of doing a straw bale herb garden in that spot.

the usual idea is that at the end of the season, you haul the straw bales to your compost heap, but my plan is to let them compost on site, add some more soil in the spring, and build up a bit of a berm. i put down 3 layers of cardboard, then the bales, the usual thing. ( theres a website and book for this type of gardening)

its been about 50% successful, but, its been a dry year. the sunflowers are at least doing well. but you know who popped up, through 3 layers of cardboard and 24 inches of straw, and bagged, sterile soil?

BINDWEED. i never even had bindweed in that site before! im just going to sit here and quietly stare into the distance, now. yup.

self raising flour- need recipes

I recently got given a 5 pound bag of self raising flour. I remember my grandma buying this in the 1960s and making a really good sponge cake, like a vanilla or yellow cake she would split and put jam in that she called English Cake (English was not her first language, but she worked as a housekeeper for a while) does anyone know what this could have been? maybe a British style cake?

any other ideas what i should make with this flour? i'd like to use it up and have desserts or coffee cakes or things in the freezer.

thank you in advance

amazing chore day

Both hose bibs were leaking and i had estimates of $500 each to have them "looked at". im an older woman with not a ton of plumbing skills. (My previous peak experiencecwas replacing a vanity faucet.)

I watched a buch of youtubes, turned off the water, took my washer assortment and my teflon tape and HOLY BUCKETS! I DID IT! Both of them repaired in under one hour and two hardware store trips.

Im an older lady person who lives alone except for my disabled son, so have nonone to celebrate with. My mom would tell me ive never been lady like, my step dadcwould tell me i likely caused a leak in the house that will manifest in the next few months. ( reader, i supported the pipe with a pipe wrench while unscrewing the bib, i am 99% certain i did not cause a leak in the drywall that will manifest itself in the upcoming months.)

anyhoo, both washeres were in terrible condition, and it was nice to just go to fix something, fix it, and have it be fixed!

Vegetable plant sale FC area

If you happen to live in the Fort Collins area, or will be up that way, Gulleys green house has all their vegetable plats at 40% off. many many varieties of peppers and tomatoes, all in excellent condition.

I was there for a few natives and i needed some pineapple mint, and thought i would mention it, though i know of course, most people live down in Denver.

i had a success

my brother came to visit, and his clothes stank. he was deeply distressed, but said he didnt know what to do as he had washed them ( with tide pod) right before coming.

WELLL! i rewashed everything with amonia, Biz, a double dose of Ariel and a cirtic acid rinse. Hot water, long wash, second rinse used. TADA!! the body funk/ old man/ mildew smell was gone. Its been three days, no rebloom, and he said hes going to toss his pods and he wants to learn my ways.

Since i only joined this sub a few months ago, because of a sheet situation, i wanted to thank you all for making me look smart! And, saving my brother from smelling like a stinky old dude, lol

i just keep going

Wasnt really planning on taking this part out, but then the dog food delivery cam, and i have some extra chips in bags...need some ides/ sugestions for dry shade plantings.

this area is under a giand mugo pine. i have not hag luck with lamium or aguga or festuca. the soil is clay, hoping that the chips at least look decent and the composting lawn will ass something to the soil.

the straw bales are being conditioned to be planted in

Babushka Boy has been left with Grandma

Grandma say he is good boy, gives him fried potatoes. He still misses Papa, who is away at wars. Or maybe just night class.

im not affiliated with this young mans you tube channel, but im making planter boxes so my sister can grow tomatoes on her balcony in Denver. i was greatly im pressed with all the free plans, the free tutorials, and the use on non toxic cedar. the name of the channel is whose the voss im putting a link in for the raised bed im going to try next.

now the young man is not, himself a gardener, but an entrepreneurial type. however, he doesnt seem to make junk. in fact, everything looks like it is going to serve my, and my sisters plants well, and the materials and designs are quite thrifty. hope this helps someone else
