I know we don’t like Big Box, but these massive healthy 2Qt Delphiniums rang up at $4 a piece at Lowes and I’m not going to apologize for wanting to share

I don’t know if every Lowes has it but the one on Santa Fe Dr. by old town Littleton does.

The tag is “Aurora Blue” delphinium, blue flowers with white bee as shown in second photo. According to Jackson Perkins they are cold hardy to Zone 3 and bred for strong stems (although mine will still be staked).

The search is on for Denver’s next great shade tree

Topic I think about too much as I walk around looking at the aging trees in my neighborhood.

Any in-ground veggie garners around?

I've been growing in cloth bags (dry out too soon) and raised beds for the past 5 years and I'm looking for some feedback from team in-ground. I really want to grow some strawberries and maybe even test a tomato or some other veggies in some spots. I've got some garlic I need to start and I've been told they really don't need much fancy stuff. Pro, cons, any info is helpful. Wondering about soil temps and other challenges you may run into.

2 questions..

  1. Does anyone know who these eggs on my yarrow belong to?
  2. Is anyone else having a ton of mushrooms pop up in their mulch? I assume this is fine?

Spinach leaf miners

Anyone have advice for these? Anyone else dealing with these this Spring?

We have them on our spinach and beet leaves. I don't want to use any insecticide in my garden... Currently breaking off the leaves with eggs or damage and discarding them.

If you did cover your garden this week, when are you removing the covers?

I unfortunately do have peppers and tomatoes in the ground, and the next couple of nights are in the 40s, so I’m unsure.

New house with a muddy “lawn” and dirty dogs…what should I throw down to fill it out?

Not looking to grow a bunch of grass in the backyard that’s giving me trouble, really looking for a native solution that grows quickly and easily to help with my muddy floor issue while simultaneously being an easy and native plant. My first thought was something like clover but figured there were bound to be better, native, solutions.
As long as it doesn’t look particularly shitty I’m good with whatever. If there’s a native flower (or set of flowers) that grows to a reasonable grass-ish height I’d be more than happy with that as well! Renting so want to have a reasonable defense against “you just grew a bunch of weeds” and feel I can fight that if it looks good, isn’t too tall, and doesn’t spread to other yards. Helps if it’s a native plant/flower helping the environment while stopping my dogs from tracking mud everywhere…

One year ago I saw this AI post and decided to try to recreate it. This is my progress ~12 months later

Original AI post and image: https://www.reddit.com/r/landscaping/comments/1h9smfm/how_can_i_recreate_this/

About one year ago I saw this AI post of the brick wall with this profusion of different purple hued flowers and wanted to try to recreate it. The retaining wall was completed around April of last year so it has been approximately 12 months since I started planting things. The post is AI so it's hard to know exactly what is planted so I tried to pick options that would work in my zone. This is the first year of growth and I'm realizing many of the plants I planted do not bloom at exactly the same time so it is hard to achieve the same look the AI photo achieves.

Plantings include:

  1. Caradonna Salvia (planted as quart)
  2. May Night Salvia (planted as quart)
  3. Phenomenal Lavender (plants as 3 gallon)
  4. Cats Pajamas Nepeta (planted as quart)
  5. Green Mountain Boxwood (planted as 3-5 Gallon)
  6. White candytuft (planted as a super quart? it was slightly bigger than a quart but smaller than a gallon)
  7. Wee one Lavender (planted as 2"x2" pot)
  8. Onyx and Pearl (planted as 6" pot)
  9. Bolero Hyssop (planted as quarts. Planted 2 and only one survived :( )
  10. Marshmallow Yarrow (planted as quarts)
  11. Globemaster Allium (planted 10+ bulbs last fall)
  12. Mount Everest Allium (planted several bulbs and a few live plants last year they all came back but only 3 actually flowered :( )
  13. Light Blue White Bee Delphinium (planted as quarts in groups of 3)
  14. Rooguchi Clematis (planted as 6" pot they're growing up the wire diamond pattern along the brick.
  15. Sweet starlight hydrangea tree (planted a 5 gallon. This is visible in the last photo leafed out but not yet blooming)
  16. Storm cloud amsonia (dug up from a neighbors yard who wanted to get rid of it. It was roughly a 3 gallon. I only have 1 but want more as they were one of the first blooming spring plants)

Still have more to plant and need to move some things that have overcrowded each other and want to think about how I can add more purple because right now it is a lot of green while spring plants are finishing up their blooming and summer plants are just getting ready to start blooming.

Storm rain total

Share your total and neighborhood.

Sherrelwood. My gauge was showing about 1.5” last night around 8pm. I forgot to look this morning before I left the house. My gardens are so happy!

Has anyone tried to recreate a calm montane aesthetic?

I have a smaller (~500sf) south facing outdoor area that's currently covered in paver and I'm trying to envision its future.

What have yall done in your landscapes to get some of that alpine feeling in Denver?

I would love to recreate that cool, calm feeling of a mountain meadow or alpine vibes more broadly. Anticipating comments, I understand there are different light and water requirements with different plants and trees are a big part of what makes a meadow - I'm not thinking of a literal recreation.

What now?

Covered up my warm seasons plants the best I could for last night. Should I take the covers off now? Should I put them back on tonight? Or just leave them on full time for a few days?

Come take some of my sunflower and Rocky Mountain bee plant seedlings

Last year I had 2 bee plants, and I didn’t realize just how many pods they create and re seed. Each one was enormous and definitely attracted pollinators!

I also have this one patch of sunflowers that goes absolutely bananas. I think there’s some sandy soil or something that they just love … they especially like to get into the edge next to the sidewalk and then follow over so I have to drastically prune their numbers down anyway.

I’ve also got a bunch of cornflower (last pic) which has been receding and spreading nicely, potentially competing with weeds. Those are not a hassle to me, but I’m happy to part with some.

DM me if you’d like to come dig some up!

Lemon Verbena

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know where I can find Lemon Verbena? I found some last year but I could keep it alive over the winter in the house.
