Anyone able and willing to help us get rid of our front yard sod?

Looking for someone that the ability to load, haul, and unload about 6 cubic yards of sod to A1 Organics (2300 W Radcliff Ave, Sheridan, CO 80110) in the next days. We’re xeriscaping our front lawn and this sod removal is part of the process.

You would need to your own vehicle (and/or trailer), be able to load into said transportation method, and then deliver to A1, and then dump it there. They charge $35/cu. yd. with a 2 cu yd min. Our payment will cover this fee.

Please reach out if you’re interested and can do it in the next few days.

Pro Tip: All Public Events in Public Spaces (parks, streets) are on a City calendar

We’re in the midst of event season, and, unfortunately, there are some bad actors out there trying to scam folks, primarily unsuspecting vendors, by creating fake events. Someone posted a few days ago about showing up to one at the City Park Golf Course only to find out that it was all a ruse, despite the event being listed Eventbrite. TikTok, IG, and Facebook content creators will fall for it, too, including these events blindly in their event roundups. Even our dear friend that posts on here about weekend events has fallen prey to including fake events.

Why are people creating these fake events? Sometimes they’re selling entry tickets and trying to dupe you into buying them on platforms like Eventbrite, which doesn’t do due diligence to ensure the event is legit. But, most of the time these POS scammers are trying to trick vendors, a majority of which are small businesses, into paying to register to be at the event. Creating the Eventbrite pages are simply part of the scam to help convince the vendor that it’s real. I once had a new vendor I was working with lose $500 to a scammer pretending to have an event they were putting on.

Something that I realized exists that many people may not know about is that the City’s Office of Public Events and Film Permits (PEFP, formerly Office of Special Events, and still called that by most of us) maintains a public calendar of all public events that take place on public property, like parks, sidewalks, or streets. This doesn’t capture private events like picnics or weddings in the parks, or any event held on private property. But, the last two fake events I saw were supposedly held in Civic Center Park and the City Park Golf Course. They would have not shown up on this calendar.

Here’s the link to the calendar: https://www.denvergov.org/Government/Agencies-Departments-Offices/Agencies-Departments-Offices-Directory/Public-Event-Film-Permitting/Public-Events-Calendar

If you ever want to check whether the cool event you’re hearing about is legit, this is one resource you can access.

Have fun, Denverites!

Community Update: Giving should not always be urgent

Hey Buy Nothing Denver Community,

We are about two weeks into this new sub, and already we have over 2,000 members! That’s great to see such strong interest in sharing our excess with our neighbors. As we continue to grow, and since we know that not everyone has prior experience with the Buy Nothing movement, the Mods (there are 4 of us now!) want to emphasize a few things about GIVE posts:

  1. GIVE Recipients should be chosen at least 24 hours after posting: Buy Nothing strongly encourages waiting at least 24 hours for people to share their interest in an item before the OP selects the recipient. Not everyone has the ability to monitor Reddit constantly for the cool items that people are gifting. OPs, please don’t choose someone just because they were the first to respond.

  2. Choose Recipients Randomly: Again, to emphasize that BN is not “first-come, first-served”, OPs are encouraged to choose a recipient of an item (if there are more than one) at random. An easy way to do this is using a Random Number Generator (like https://www.random.org/), entering in however many respondents there were for the item. The generator will then choose the winner for you to make it the most fair.

  3. “Urgent” or “Immediate” GIVES should only be truly urgent: We understand that some items need to be moved quickly. You’re getting something delivered TODAY and need to make room for it, so you’re giving an old item, for example. OPs should only use “Urgent” or “Immediate” Gives if it cannot wait more than 24 hours (plus time for reasonable pick-up). Which brings us to our last thing…

  4. Don’t be a Bad Giftee: If you are chosen to receive an item, please follow through and pick up those items in a timely manner. I still have some items <cough cough> sitting on my porch from some folks that never picked up their items , let alone responded to the DM. We don’t want to resort to removing bad-faith members, so please follow through (and communicate) with the Gifters.

Let’s continue getting better as a Buy Nothing community and keep making this a great source of giving!

48-hr Updates: 1.3 k Members, Mod Application, and Keep the Posts Coming!

Wow, what an amazing response within the first 48 hours of creating this sub!

After just 2 days, we have more than 1.3 thousand users. More than 4,000 visits to the sub per day (okay, I might make up about a good 100 of those). We’ve had about 15 posts, ranging from giving away couches and diapers (which can be crazy expensive) to borrowing hiking boots. I am heartened by the response.

To help support this rapidly growing sub, I am recruiting a few more Moderators. No, you don’t need to have a chip on your shoulder to be a moderator. In fact, I am looking for people that are fair, equitable, communicative, willing to give grace, and can check the sub at least 2 times a day. If you’re interested, please submit the application linked above (I think), or I’ll post it in the comments below).

Please also share your feedback so far in order for us to continue to improve your experience. I invited a friend from another sub that’s great with coding to help set up some backend automations for the sub. Do you think the flair tags are too long? Would you rather the tags be “Give”, “Ask”, “Alert”, “Gratitude”, and have people make their user flair be where they live? Do you want items that have been claimed to be deleted by the OP so that you don’t get your hopes up? Let us know in the comments!

Lastly, the Buy Nothing movement only works as well as people participate. As you’re cleaning and purging, consider gifting those items you don’t need in this sub. Instead of going and buying that thing you may only need to use once, maybe ask here first (and just to borrow it!). Keep the posts coming!

Thanks for being part of this community!

Introducing r/BuyNothingDenver: a space to give freely and ask openly

Hey Denverites and Metro-ites,

Thanks for the feedback on my post asking about interest in a Reddit-based Buy Nothing sub. Based on that feedback and interest, I have created r/BuyNothingDenver, a space to give of your abundance freely, ask for items you need openly, and celebrate our community’s generosity together. This is part mutual aid, part anti-consumerism, and part community building.

Participating is easy. You can give away items that you don’t want or need anymore. Maybe you received a wrong delivery of something, or a gift from someone long ago that has just collected dust. Maybe you realized you don’t need seven of an item. So, give that abundance to someone who might need it. Clothes, appliances, toys, outdoor gear…whatever. You can also “share” knowledge or skills that you’re willing to give to others freely, like help with taxes, building garden boxes, making crochet items…as long as you give freely.

You can also ask freely for items, skills or knowledge that you might need, whether it’s permanent or just borrowing. Have a kid that’s quickly outgrowing their clothes? Ask the community for new-to-you clothes. Need to borrow snowshoes for out-of-town guests for a weekend? Ask if anyone has some you can borrow (and return in good condition). Need help with a crafting project that you can’t seem to figure out? Ask if anyone has experience that can show you how to do it.

I did hear the feedback, too, that there is already a Buy Nothing App. While there are certainly apps for many things, part of why creating this space on Reddit felt needed is that some people, like myself, don’t want to have yet another app to have to check, and the users on Reddit tend to be good people. We’ll see how it goes.

I do have one ask: I need co-moderators for the group!

If you think you have time and capability to review posts to ensure they’re following the sub’s rules, please reach out and let me know. It would mean checking the sub a couple of times a day depending on traffic. I’m thinking 3-4 moderators total would be ideal as the community grows.

For now, please head to r/BuyNothingDenver to join the sub, read the rules and guidelines, and let’s start gifting! Thanks, Denver.

I present to you the next sitcom reboot: Silver Spoons x Punky Brewster, dog edition

I think only my fellow GenXers may appreciate this, but looking at these two made me totally think of these great sitcoms from the 80’s. Would you watch?

What sitcom reboot would your pup star in? Post a picture and let me know!

I’m interested in starting a “Buy Nothing” sub(s). Would there be any other interest in having Denver-area subs , and would anyone else be up for moderating?

I used to love my Buy Nothing group on Facebook, but have stopped using most Meta platforms. I’d received so many great things from the group — a dehydrator for my garden harvest, logs for use in my hügelkulture garden beds, and even snowshoes to borrow for out-of-town guests. And, as is expected, I’ve given away my excess when I’ve had extra — a bread maker, boots, clothing, garden plant starts, even tickets to events. I’ve even had someone share their expertise in building garden beds.

I’ve searched, and I don’t see another sub that already exists for this idea. Yes, there’s r/denverlist, but the most important tenant of Buy Nothing is that you give your extra for free, no selling, trading, or bartering.

I also know that what makes these groups successful is hyper-local (or relatively hyperlocal) boundaries for each group. You’re more likely to coordinate and pick up an item if it’s close by than if it’s across town, and (hopefully) less flaking. Plus, it’s a great way to

Build community and get to know your neighbors.

To make it easy, we could start with the established boundaries/groups that exist on FB, which are:

- Cap Hill, Golden Triangle, Lincoln/La Alma

- Cheeseman Park, Congress Park, Country Club

- LoDo, Five Points, RiNo, Globeville, Elyria-Swansea

- Baker, Speer, Wash Park West

- City Park West, City Park South, Uptown, Cole

- Highlands, Sunnyside, West Highlands, Berkeley

- Harvey Park, Harvey Park South

- Westwood, Barnum, Mar Lee

- Virginia Village, Washington Virginia Vale, Indian Creek, Glendale

- Mayfair, Montclair, Hilltop, East Denver

- Park Hill, Park Hill North

- Central Park

Of course, there are more Denver neighborhoods than I have listed, so let me know what other groupings make sense. I know folks in the suburbs would probably have interest, but I don’t know their neighborhoods.

Moderators would be needed for each group, plural intended. And, we would need/want to register with the official Buy Nothing Project as a private group. I’ll put more info on starting a new group in the comments. Note: there is a $10 fee to start and register a group. Yes, the irony.

Who would use a Buy Nothing group? Would you be able and willing to be a moderator? I will help coordinate and get groups off the ground, but after that it’s up to each group’s mods. Leave a comment one way or another, and if you’re willing to be a moderator, which neighborhoods/city you’d be willing to oversee.

Thanks, all! Happy Sunday!

Ciao Babe, Italian street food, now open in Avanti Food Hall LoHi

Just wanted to share some under-the-radar news: Ciao Babe, featuring Tuscan street sandwiches and Roman pastas, has just opened in the old Biker Jim’s in Avanti F+B in LoHi. I got to go the the friends and family opening on Wednesday night, and the food was delicious. The sandwiches are on schiacciata bread (lighter and thinner than focaccia), and have strachiatella (burrata’s creamy cousin), prosciutto , mortadella, porchetta, and other traditional ingredients; and Roman pastas, like caccio e pepe (pictured), carbonara, and amatriciana (all using guanciale, of course). They also have tiramisu and do an affogato for dessert.

My friend, Niko, is the owner, and he’s the same guy that brought you Berliner Haus with its döner kebab. He is importing many of the ingredients and getting them from a local supplier of European ingredients.

*Note*: Niko is a just friend, and I get no kickbacks for this. He’s just a great, humble guy and I hope his new venture (which he had to throw together in 8 days) goes well.

Looking for a new local concert buddy to join me at the 6/25 @ Summit Music Hall show in Denver

*Note: Thanks, mods, for allowing me to post here!*

I was lucky to snag two tickets to the Geese show at Summit Music Hall on June 25, but I have no one to go with (my husband hates Cameron’s voice and my other concert buddy just isn’t sophisticated enough to appreciate their music). I’m one of those people that hates going to things (concerts, movies, etc) by myself, so I wanted to see if I could use this as an opportunity to find a new concert buddy with similar music tastes and, ideally, other similar interests/life experiences. And/or if there’s anyone else already planning to go that might want to meet up and go together?

I feel like I might be a bit of a Geese fan outlier - I’m a mid-40’s GenX’er gay guy. It’d be awesome to find someone else that’s also older (Xennial, at least) and has similar music taste. Didn’t get into them until Getting Killed, but have gone back into their discography and like 3D Country and Cameron’s solo album a lot. Other bands I listen to often are Wolf Parade, the National, Radiohead, Modest Mouse, Bright Eyes, Car Seat Headrest, Death Cab for Cutie, and Bon Iver. More “younger” stuff I listen to is MJ Lenderman, Turnstile, Arlo Parks, Muna, and Wet Leg. Not expecting us to be besties, but it would be nice to make a new ongoing concert buddy!

I have proven that I have the tickets to the mods and have it listed on Tixel. I will also be vetting responses and making sure you’re legit and not just trying to scam me for a ticket. I am NOT giving away the ticket - it’s $93 (I splurged and got the bottomless soda option in case I didn’t want to drink, but I am not sober, necessarily) and will have you buy it before the show. I’ll likely ask that we meet up beforehand, though, just to make sure all on the up + up. Unlike Cameron, I’m not gonna let you stay with me and pretend I’m not there.

Hit me up if you wanna rock out together at Geese next week!

2 tickets to Metric and Broken Social Scene at the Fillmore

I bought two tickets off a generous person from here - $50 each, less than face value. But a med that I take has given me side effects that have had me nauseous and puking all day, so I’m not up to going despite really wanting to. Happy to sell these at $50 each OBO. Split them, too.

Can transfer tickets electronically via Ticketmaster. Can take payment via Zelle or CashApp only - I don’t use PayPal or Venmo (fuck Peter Thiel).

Charlie Was Here, and He Loved, Fiercely: A Eulogy

The following is a true story. Only the names of the humans have been changed. But Charlie gets to keep his name. He earned it.

In the dead of night, almost 10 years ago, someone dropped off “Christopher” at a local shelter, into their surrender space with no accompanying information. No history, no records, no stories of who this dog was, other than a name.

Then, on June 22, Tim went to the the local pet store for a shelter adoption day (fun note: that pet store was just hundreds of feet from this dog’s future home). At the event , Tim met this cute, medium-sized, black, white, and brown Australian shepherd mix, with supposedly a dash of Rottweiler. Tim had wanted an active, high energy dog in the hopes that it would make him also be active and high energy. The dog charmed Tim; it was love at first booty-scoot. They played fetch with a ball.

The dog chose Tim that day.

The dog became Charlie on the drive home.

At first, Tim took Charlie everywhere - the hardware store, friend’s kids birthday parties. Charlie seemed well adjusted and was well behaved. Then, as Charlie came to love and care for Tim more deeply, he wanted so badly to protect him from the dangers of the world, especially from other dogs and anyone that dared come to the door. Charlie became the ultimate protector. He was a guard dog.

Soon, some quirks started to emerge with Charlie. Clapping, dancing, and hugging weren’t allowed around Charlie. He didn’t trust women, or smokers. You were not allowed to yell or cheer for anything without Charlie coming in and trying to keep the peace. Everything had to be calm, quiet, and tranquil under Sheriff Charlie’s watch. He was Tim’s dog, after all; he knew exactly what Tim needed at that point in his life, especially as he was processing a break up. The two bonded deeply and fiercely, and Charlie wasn’t going to let anyone get in between them.

Then James showed up at the door one day, and despite some initial growls, Charlie felt something was different. This bearded man seemed okay, and Tim felt comfortable around him. They went on a hike together at a local state park and became friends. The next few weeks Charlie saw a lot of James, but then there was a long break, though Charlie didn’t know or understand why. Charlie’s feelings for James, however, didn’t change.

When James and Tim started dating again, Charlie now had two in his herd that he had to protect. Which was somewhat of a surprise when Charlie tried to murder James with a chef’s knife that he’d hidden in the couch in March 2018. Somehow, Charlie knew that James was coming over to break up with Tim. So when Tim wasn’t looking, Charlie grabbed the knife from the counter where Tim had been cutting salami, and took it to the couch. After licking off the tasty salami bits from the knife, he stashed it in the cushions of the couch. Then, when James came over to tell Tim the relationship was over, James sat on the knife, piercing his jeans and giving him a 1-inch cut on his right butt cheek. Well, James wasn’t going to be breaking up with Tim if he needed him to drive them to urgent care! The plan worked, and James changed his mind and stayed together with Tim. They started to become closer.

About a year later, in May 2019, Charlie and Tim moved in with James. On a road trip to Southern California in December 2019, Charlie was with Tim and James when they proposed - to each other! - at Death Valley National Park. In October 2020, Charlie was the ring bearer at Tim and James’ wedding, right at the place where they’d all gone on their first hike together. Then, in October 2021, Charlie got to have his own huge backyard at what became Casa de Charlie. He roamed the grounds, patrolled for squirrel invaders, dug multiple holes where he could lay to keep cool, and basked in the sun just off the back porch. This is where he would solidify his role as garden gnome, standing guard by James as he worked in the garden, protecting against any squirrels or rabbits that dared steal James’ garden bounty.

Through the years, Charlie got to explore beyond the backyard of Casa de Charlie. He went on many road trips to California, where he ate In-N-Out, played in the sand at the beach, and met, and somewhat tolerated, his cousins. Charlie got to visit 9 national parks of some of these road trips, where he wondered why he couldn’t join on all the hikes. But he loved the parks, nonetheless.

Charlie was a camping dog, he was a hiking dog, he was a mountain dog. Charlie loved joining Tim and James on trips to many of the state parks and national forests around Colorado. He relished smelling all the things on long hikes, of course after pooping just far enough away from the trailhead to make it inconvenient. Charlie once saved James and his brother on a hike in a local wilderness area when they miscalculated how long it was going to take them, and as the sun set and it started getting darker and darker, Charlie was able to find the trail and lead the back to their car.

Charlie loved drinking from a mountain stream or lake. Now, he didn’t like swimming in it - just standing in it deep enough where it never touched his belly. All he needed was to taste the cool, clean water on his big, pink tongue. That’s all. But, the best part about the mountains was when Charlie found SNOW! Any patch of snow was an opportunity for revelry by rolling around in it, digging into it, and feeling it all over his thick, black, beautiful coat. Snow was the best, and never was an opportunity wasted to make a dog angel in a patch of mountain snow.

Over the years, a select few people got to become friends with Charlie. These were people he could trust to treat Tim and then James well, and who would be willing to give him back scratches. These friends were all thoroughly vetted before they all were accepted into Charlie’s inner circle. There was some family that he got to know and love. He only kinda tolerated dog cousins. But, his favorite were Grandma and Grandpa, who became like his second herd. He loved being with them - sitting in the chair by Grandma, backing up to her to allow her to scratch him, letting Grandpa take him on walks and only minimally trying to yank off his arm. He loved laying on the patio, soaking up the sun, and chasing away all the dogs that walked nearby. They became his favorite people, too.

Charlie has come a long way from that night at the animal shelter, all by himself. He got a new name, got to explore so many beautiful places, made new friends, and had a family that loved him so much. He’s had a beautiful life filled with so many adventures. But more than anything, he’s loved and cared for Tim and James so fiercely, with all his heart, unwavering in his duty, committed to the end.

Charlie was here, all right. He will always be here with us. We will carry him with us, for he shaped so much of our lives, forever. Our Charlie. Our Charles Montgomery. Our Chuck. Our Chuckles McGee. Our Charlie Boy. Our Booboos. Our Bubba. Our Good Boy.

We love you, buddy. We already miss you something fierce.

Hey all, I have extra potatoes that I ordered from the CSU potato research lab down in the San Luis Valley and I’m happy to part with some! These aren’t varieties that you can get at local garden centers - these had to be special ordered.

In all, here is what I have available:

- Masquerade - 20 lbs (picture #1)

- Vista Gold - 8 lbs (pic #2)

- Midnight Moon - 8 lbs (pic #3)

- CO05028-4P/PY - 8 lbs (pic #4)

- TC17742-1PW/PW - 8 lbs (pic #5)

The potatoes are $2.85/lb, which includes the costs I had to pay for shipping. I’ll sell in 1 lb increments except for the Masquerade, which I’m selling in 2 lb increments. And I will accept payment in cash or Zelle (I don’t use PayPal or Venmo). I can meet you in SE Denver (near I-25 and Colorado Blvd.) or the Golden Triangle during the weekdays. And this is first-come, first-served!
