Norse Saga Room

The remarkable Norse Saga Room opened to the public on May 16, 2019 and is now a fixture of ASI’s visitor experience. Located in the Lower Level of the Turnblad Mansion, this fairy-tale-like room is an example mythology brought to life through masterful woodworking and folk art.

The influence of Viking culture and even earlier Norse mythology extended into the fields of art and craft, particularly in Norway, where this imagery was immensely popular. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, artists such as Gerhard Munthe provided interior and furniture design for private homes and public venues using motifs that created a Viking effect and drew upon symbolism from Norwegian folk art, Norse mythology and Japanese art.

There have been several projects regarding our state government which I think would be beneficial in illustrating how/what/where the money goes to a concerned population. This particular project is DOGE inspired, and would be an in-depth org chart showing something I think would be beneficial - tracking what is tied to what. Similar to what is above, but able to be drilled down on to the nth degree. The state is such a sprawling monstrosity, that we as a people are often unable to find a very simple answer due to the multiple seemingly similar state departments handling things similarly or dis-similarly (Have you ever tried to find out information on aging Minnesotans? How about the 3 separate groups mandating and enforcing rules on the roadways, sometimes at odds with each other?) This might easily be an AI generated project. It may mean 24 months of nose to the grindstone work. As there seems to be no manner to unequivocally ascertain how MANY of these different divisions there are, it seems a likely place to start. Even the State website goes on and on and on with link after link after link to a neverending list of employee committees, groups and even the sub committees and sub groups. Does anybody have ideas on how to go about this project? I am unaware of any source for what I am looking for, and if someone has already invented the wheel please please share it! I am also not an AI guy - Until recently, I was always under the thought that AI stood for artificial insemination - which is used on the farm to "breed without the bull", if you will. Not saying I cannot learn something new, but being realistic about my own abilities.

This years harvest was small and dirty. Took for-EV-er to scrub them clean! Looking forward to the Christmas Smorgasbord! We've got all our sausages, cheeses, pickles made up and ready, all that is left is the pickled northern pike (LOTS of that!) and maybe going to try to make some of our own crackers this year, we shall see. But - These things will wait for a few months yet. God kväll!

Anna Mary Rieke Story:

Mary was considered a defender of the Fort, along with her brothers, Adam, Victor, George, August, and Heinrich. Her name appears on the Defenders Monument at the Fort because of a role she played on August 19, 1862. She had been ordered to watch the women and children, making sure none of them raised their heads above the window sills on the second floor of the stone barracks where they took refuge along with several Indian women. Mary overheard one of these Indian women say to another that this would be a good time to attack the Fort since most of the soldiers were away. This woman started to leave, Mary tried to stop her, but couldn't, so she ran down the stairs to find a soldier. Finding one, she told him what she had heard, he went after the Indian and brought her back upstairs. He told Mary to guard her with her life (drawing his sword to add emphasis) as she was a spy who would have warned the attacking Indians about the weakness of the Fort's defenses. Mary truly helped save the Fort and no doubt changed the progress of the uprising because the Indians held off until August 20th, by which time the group of defenders had increased in numbers.

MN Historical Society Letters:

Cecelia Ochs was a nine year old girl taking care of Mrs. Caroline Stocker, a neighbor woman who was bedridden. On August 18, 1862, Indians attacked the house as they were sitting down to dinner, broke a window and shot and killed Mrs. Stocker in bed.
Cecelia and Mr. Stocker then fled to the cellar. When they realized the house was set afire, they dug themselves out with pieces of wood and ran to the Zettels, another neighbor, only to find Mr Zettel dead, a loaf of bread he had offered to the Indians soaked with his blood. Cecelia saw the bodies of her classmates in the next room. That same day, her uncle was killed and decapitated while working in his field.

August 17 1862 was the start of a bloody war that left over 500 White settlers dead - a large percentage of them children and women. Four sioux Braves were caught trying to steal eggs, and shot the settlers rather than walk home empty handed. Word would spread quickly.

From the Cooper Union speech: "When you speak of us Republicans, you do so only to denounce us as reptiles, or, at the best, as no better than outlaws. You will grant a hearing to pirates or murderers, but nothing like it to "Black Republicans." ... But you will not abide by the election of a Republican president! In that supposed event, you say, you will destroy the Union; and then, you say, the great crime of having destroyed it will be upon us! That is cool. A highwayman holds a pistol to my ear and mutters through his teeth, "Stand and deliver, or I shall kill you, and then you will be a murderer!"

Although it is really uncomfortable for so many to talk about this, it must be discussed or it will never get better. Simply wishing that it was not true does not, in fact, make it untrue.
