Huayapam vs. Tlilaxtic?

I'm coming up on the end of a one-month trip to Oaxaca, and I'm excited to start the process of relocating down here! I've spent the last week looking at potential rental properties, and I've pretty much narrowed it down to a house in Huayapam and a house in Tlilaxtic. The Huayapam house came along first, and I'd pretty much made up my mind to rent that one, but since I saw the other one in Tlilaxtic on Friday, I'm torn.

I've been staying in Huayapam for the last week, and I've really been enjoying its energy - the trees, the narrow, twisty streets, the street dogs barking, the random loudspeakers, the near-constant music wafting in. In the brief time I've spent in Tlilaxtic, it just seems...more subdued, I guess? Much quieter, wide, flat streets on a grid, less energy, fewer trees, less green.

Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of being able to spend a week in Tlilaxtic now to get a better feel for the vibe before making this decision, so I thought I'd ask here - does anyone have any thoughts on this? The house in Tlilaxtic does suit my needs better than the one in Huayapam - if it didn't, this would be an easy call. I'm mainly looking for input on what living in Tlilaxtic is like, and how you think it compares to Huayapam.

Translation?

I'm running WhatsApp in Android on a Galaxy S22, and I don't have the translate option anywhere - neither individual message or chat thread. I've looked on the WhatsApp site, and all it says is that it "might" be due to my device, and to keep updating the app. I've been unable to find anything definitive on what devices they're supporting translation on, or how much longer it will be until the rollout is complete. Given that the rollout apparently started nearly a year ago, this seems odd - does anyone have any information on this?

Edit: To be more specific

  • Does anyone here using a galaxy S22 have the translation feature?

  • Does anyone else here not have the translation feature?

  • Does anyone here any any information on why someone might not have the feature? Or know of things that I might be able to change in other to get the feature?

Men's linen shirts in Oaxaca?

I'm about a third of the way through a one-month trip to Oaxaca, and I find myself needing to replace some shirts that have gotten stained. Does anyone have any recommendations for reasonably priced, quality men's clothing in Oaxaca? Ideally, I'd like to find some short-sleeved linen shirts.

Trip planning

I'm planning to head down to Oaxaca for about a month in a couple weeks to see if it's the place for me. A few questions:

\\- Does anyone have recommendations on interesting towns to stay in? Ideally places that have some history to explore, and are near to forests / mountains / rivers / streams for hiking. I've been looking at some of the pueblo magicos in the state, but I'm not finding much available on airbnb. Are there other / better sites to find a place for a month or so?

\\- Does anyone have recommendations on language resources to connect with while I'm there? I'm hoping to connect with a SSL teacher while I'm there. I'm very much a beginner.

\\- Is there anyone out there who would be interested in meeting up while I'm there to discuss your experiences?

\\- I originally posted the above in the r/Oaxaca sub, and it was removed for some reason. Before the removal, I got a comment from someone who claimed to be a Oaxaca resident who said that this may not be a safe trip. When I've asked about safety in other subs, I've been told that issues of safety are overblown, even that it's a racist attitude to think that there are safety issues. I'm seriously considering retiring there - this trip is meant to be an exploration to see if I want to make the move in the coming months. My goal would be to find my place in the culture there, not to stay in "expat enclaves" and basically live the life I've been living in a different place. Is this an unrealistic plan?

EDIT: I've heard the advice regarding Air BnB, and I'll definitely not be using them. I've enrolled in a Spanish language school for the first two weeks of my visit, and for that time I'll be in a home stay arranged by the school. During that time, I'll get local advice on options for the rest of my stay.

Hello, all! I'm currently researching a hopefully near-future relocation / retirement to Mexico. I'm 56M, and I was laid off in October from a job I've had for the last 12 years. I have some $ saved for retirement, but not enough at this point to sustain a retirement in the states. I started looking around for where it would possibly be enough, and I'm currently focused on the Oaxaca area as a potential landing spot. While low cost of living is definitely a factor, I'm also very interested in settling in an area that has a lot of indigenous culture. I'm very much into spending time outdoors, so the forested mountains of Oaxaca are also a definite plus. I've never been a city guy - I'd much prefer to land in a small-to-medium town. I'd love to hear from anyone who's in a smaller town, and not necessarily in Oaxaca - where are you located? Why did you pick your destination over others? What's your experience like? As I mentioned above, easy access to forests and mountains is key for me, so I marked more arid locales such as Guanajuato off my list pretty quickly. The only real barrier I see at this point - and it is a barrier - is that I've just begun learning Spanish. I don't want to concentrate on finding a place where more English is spoken that in others, though - I hope to learn through immersion, and make use of translation apps on my smartphone to get me through the early stages of learning. Feel free to DM me if you're open to chatting.
