First-timer thoughts

Since it's been a few days, I figured I'd spill a few of my thoughts about my experience.

- First and foremost, my son and I had a great time. Aside from what I read here, I didn't know what to expect and was blown away by the size and layout of the whole thing.

- Entry was a train wreck on Friday with the mad dash that started the day. But if you have tape on the floor to hold people in line, that's bound to happen.

- At first I was mad that I didn't get any VQ for shopping either day we were there, but by 3 pm on Saturday, the stores I wanted to get into were standby, so I got to go in anyway.

- D23 Marketplace was a letdown. For the size of the store, they should have had more items to purchase IMO. Thankfully, it was a short line because I didn't see anything in there I wanted.

- I really wish I had gotten access to attend more panels. We attended the Simpsons panel, and it was one of my favorite parts of the whole weekend.

- The entertainment presentation on Friday evening was amazing. I'm so glad I did that one and skipped the Saturday one.

- Panels and shows aside, the whole expo floor is so fun to walk around and see everything. The cosplay, the displays, and the freebies made the event well worth the time and money. We also got to meet one of my favorite podcasters, Lou Mongello, and Jim Hanks in the Atari booth.

I think that's it for now. I just wanted to share some thoughts and see if anyone else had some similar thoughts as me. Thanks, Disney cast members, for a fun weekend!!!

Standby lines for panels.

How many people normally get in on standby lines on the panels?

I'm sure you have to line up super early for them, but just curious of the chances on the panels I missed out on.

Thanks in advance.

Fast Lane thoughts..

Ok. To each their own on this, but I took my daughter to Kings Island yesterday and almost everything worked great.

We have never gotten Fast Lane even though we've been here many times, but decided to splurge since we didn’t really do anything else this summer. The Friday price was slightly higher than the rest of the week, but still lower than the weekend.

By midday, most of the coasters had about an hour wait, but FL was consistently under 5 minutes. We arrived before opening and basically walked out 15 after closing and in that time, we rode 30 rides using our pass. Plus The Bat which doesn't have one apparently. Pretty much hit every ride in the park!

That's a win in my book and worth the money. Our longest wait of the day (not counting the Burger at Brewhouse) was the night ride on the Beast to get front row !

Best day to go?

I've been to Kings Island many times, but it's been a while since I've been there during Summer break. We normally go around Halloween or around the end of May.

I was looking at taking the kids one day before school is back in.

Is there a day that is better to go over the summer, or are they all the same?

I'm assuming Sat/Sun are still the busiest because of parents being off work, but that may not matter this time of year.

Thoughts?

Proof of time/corral placement question.

This might have been asked somewhere but I didn't see it.

I did a half marathon yesterday to get a time for the full marathon in January. They wanted a 2:22 time, but I unfortunately was struggling and ended with a 2:31.

If you don't meet the 2:22, are you lumped in with everyone who didn't submit a time or do you get a higher corral placement because you submitted one?

Hopefully that makes sense.

"Toy Story 5" review

So, since seeing this, I have tried to explain my feelings about it, and I don’t feel like it’s coming across properly. “Toy Story 5” is nowhere near a bad movie; in fact, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I loved the story of Jessie and her getting some peace from past traumas. All the Buzz’s were a fun addition, and it’s always nice to see so many of the familiar characters make a return… in fact, pretty much all of them did.

In addition to all the characters I’ve already talked about, we get all the returning favorites like Dolly, Trixie, Forky, and, of course, the original group of Slinky Dog, Rex, and Hamm. Also, as with any new Toy Story, we have our share of new characters, led by Smarty Pants (Conan O’Brien) and Atlas (Craig Robinson). It’s great to see all of these.

However, my one main issue with this film is how it deals with Bonnie and Blaze at the end. What appears to be a happy ending on the surface only leads me to one thought… Bonnie may have a friend now, but she is still growing up and will very soon not be playing with any of those toys anymore. So, Woody got his happy ending in Toy Story 4 with Bo Peep, but what sort of ending do the rest get, other than Buzz and Jessie being married? This is where I struggle to make my point.

I feel really good about where Bonnie is at the end, but the toys are doomed to lose another kid sooner rather than later as she continues to grow. Why not give them a happy ending as well? Hopefully, you understand where I’m coming from. I’m happy to see another story from this franchise, I’m just afraid that outside of Jessie (maybe Buzz), not a single story was moved along to put them into a better spot moving forward.

Overall, it was a fun ride, and I’m glad we got to enjoy this at the drive-in movie theater. I will also be 100% watching this as soon as it comes out on Disney + because it deserves a rewatch for sure. I also wonder how much I miss when I do go to a drive-in, and there are always cars and people moving around. In the end, the ending bothers me, but not enough to put too much hate on the finished product. I still give this a 7 out of 10.

Can I sell both expo and Honda tickets?

I have 2 tickets for expo both Friday and Saturday as well as 2 Honda tickets for Friday.

If my wife is unable to attend due to some health reasons, am I able to sell all of those tickets?

Or could I go solo and sell just half of them?

This was going to be my first time going so not sure of specifics here.

Review of "The Breadwinner"

Raise your hand if you’ve ever seen a Nate Bargatze stand-up comedy special. Now for those of you who haven’t, but you’ve seen “The Breadwinner”, you're in luck. This is basically a stand-up special, but in story form. The jokes are there, the setups are there, but instead of being on stage, he’s a family man.

Now, don’t get the impression that it’s all bad. This is a decent movie; it’s just not great. I laughed at quite a bit of the jokes, but the story was all pretty much either told in the trailer or too easy to figure out as it progressed. Bargatze does a decent job, but he is pretty much playing himself, so how bad could he be? In fact, his character’s name is even Nate. What really saved this movie was the surrounding cast. It was loaded with funny talent outside of the Wilcox family. Forte, along with Zach Cherry, Kumail Nanjiani, Martin Herlihy, and Colin Jost, all brought unique characters to their respective roles.

Since this is Bargatze’s first major movie and leading role, I will cut him a little slack. I’m sure we will see him start popping up in more movies now. Director Eric Appel is no stranger to comedies either, so I’m sure that helped. Overall, it was funny, but forgettable. Not bad, but probably not worth going out of my way to watch again. In the end, I will leave this with a 5 out of 10.

Review of "Masters of the Universe"

Before seeing this, I really didn’t know what to expect. The original from 1987 was an ok film and holds a place in my heart since I watched it as a kid, but it honestly wasn’t a great movie. Its biggest flaw is that not enough characters were used… in my opinion. Thankfully, that was remedied this time around. There were so many of the toys I used to play with as a child that turned into characters on the big screen, which was cool.

Unfortunately, that may be its biggest downfall as well. My buddy and I both enjoyed “Masters of the Universe” because of that. But also because it was a much better story this time around. Adam finding his way back home and helping the people who were still alive was a good story for this character type, and it played well with how the movie was shot. I do feel like they spent too much time on the backstory, though.

Honestly, this would have worked better as just an origin story and then save Skeletor for a sequel, perhaps? Have Adam/He-Man fight his way through the city only to meet up with the main villain at the end… boom credits and onto part two. Then they could have a Skeletor-heavy movie and focus on his backstory. But, either way, it was fun, and I mostly enjoyed it. The humor was well-timed, and some of the “adult humor” was very on-the-nose. It made me laugh, and I didn’t have an issue with it at all.

I think what will hurt this movie is its own identity. This movie was made for my generation of people who know the characters and perhaps played with the toys. If you don’t know who the Masters of the Universe are, would you care about going to see this? Maybe, but in a jam-packed release week, there are several other choices as well, so this will probably take a hit because of that.

Overall, it was fun, action-packed, and pulled on my nostalgia string a little bit. The humor was well-placed and hit at the right moments. There is a lot here to really like, but I’m afraid it’s going to fall flat based solely on what it is and not how good it is. In the end, I toyed with giving this an 8, but decided to settle on a 7 out of 10. I think they could have done more to bring in a wider audience, but I didn’t see it done anywhere.

Review of "Mandalorian and Grogu"

So, the common theme among most critics about this movie was that it felt like watching several episodes of “The Mandalorian” instead of a movie. But I think that was just because they are so used to seeing these characters on a show that they can’t get it out of their head. Personally, I can see how you could make that division in your head based on the different aspects of the film, but not enough to ruin my movie-watching experience.

All in all, it’s a Star Wars movie at heart, and I will take those most times over a lot of the other stuff that has been coming out over the last several months. Not only is it a Star Wars movie, but it’s a Star Wars movie filled with characters we know and love. Just ask the lady who was sitting behind me in the movie theater… she REALLY loved Grogu! We had to hear it every time he was on the screen.

Besides the familiar characters, we also get some really amazing-looking scenes, like when that AT-AT walker falls off the side of the mountain and the forest area where the Hutt twins are located. That whole area reminded me somewhat of Endor from “Return of the Jedi”. Any sci-fi or space movie is going to rely heavily on computer graphics, so it’s nice when one has a big budget behind it to make it look nice.

I think the biggest downside of “The Mandalorian and Grogu” was the story. The plot is what made it feel more like a show. Some of the stuff they did in the movie wasn’t any different than stuff they did for three seasons on Disney+. It wasn’t bad necessarily, just didn’t give it a movie vibe. Like I was saying a few paragraphs earlier, it doesn’t ruin anything, but also doesn’t give big movie vibes.

Overall, it was fun, and any Star Wars fan is going to enjoy the hell out of this. Star Wars is always fun on the big screen, and this one did not disappoint. Even though I felt like some parts were overly focused on Grogu, I also know why they did that. People love Baby Yoda, so they kept spoon-feeding him to us throughout its lofty runtime. I am a Star Wars fan, so I was happy with this and also happy to give it a 7 out of 10.

2 day park question

Ok, when I go in Jan. for the WDW marathon, I decided to stay 2 extra days to get in some park time since I haven't been since '18. (I did do DL a couple of years ago).

I have a 2-day ticket with park hopper option. So here is my question. Which one of these options is easier to navigate (assuming I only do 2 parks in one day):

#1: Epcot/Hollywood on day 1 and MK/AK on day 2. Keep the Skyliner resorts on the same day.

#2: Epcot/MK on day 1 and Hollywood/AK on day 2. I can use the monorail on day 1.

Side notes, there are a few attractions at each park that I definitely want to hit.

"In the Grey" review

“In the Grey” is very much a tale of two stories. Director Guy Ritchie does what he does best and puts together an action/crime thriller. It’s a full cast of well-dressed characters and witty dialogue. But, in my opinion, the characters weren’t fully understood enough. There were a few things explained about their past, but not nearly as much as there could have been… especially considering the runtime of this film.

A lot of the action scenes were fun and carefully thought out, even if they were unnecessary. I’m mostly referring to the scene when Rachel wants to stop for a beer. I’m certain that they threw that in there so it gives us a good look at how the team can operate, but she was a very smart person, and it made no sense for her to want to stop at that point.

I really liked the cast, and they played off one another very well. I do wish at least one of the two main characters had some personality, though. It was tough at times to watch two strong, straight-laced dudes carry on a conversation with no animation in their actions. It was almost like they were playing the same character at times. I get that playing the tough guy is crucial to their part, but it never stops. González, on the other hand, did a better job in that department. It was really fun to watch her work her magic.

My biggest issue with this was the way it was almost a hard stop, then a time jump. It was like the first hour or so was a heist movie, then the last 40 minutes or so became a rescue mission. It was almost like it wasn’t planned out or something. The heist was fun, and the rescue was fun, but the way they were divided just didn’t cut it.

Overall, it was a fun action movie with a top-notch cast. Ritchie should have been able to run wild with this one, but instead, he kept it tame and way too short. Show us more of the characters' backstories and a smoother transition between parts. There were bits of a great movie here, but way too many holes to fill in the finished product. This will land right in the middle with a paltry 5 out of 10, and that’s mostly from González’s part in this.
