Chat Control 1.0 is different from Chat Control 2.0 in that providers (like us at Tuta) are not forced to backdoor their end-to-end encryption for surveillance.

At Tuta, if Chat Control 2.0 is passed we have two options: to move out of the EU or sue and fight it. As our CEO, Matthias Pfau has stated, we would sue and fight for people's privacy. Because for us, undermining end-to-end encryption is not an option.

Despite being rejected twice before by the EU Parliament, Chat Control 1.0 has passed today, with 314 votes against it and 276 in favour (crazy!). Mass scanning of private chats is now legally permitted until 2028. The EU simply kept bringing it back through urgent procedure until the outcome finally matched what it wanted from the start, and that is not how democratic process is meant to function.

Here is what this actually means going forward:
- Every photo, message, and file you send through major platforms can now be scanned automatically by Big Tech
Mass surveillance of 450 million EU citizens is now permitted without individual warrants
- Every citizen is placed under general suspicion by default, rather than surveillance being targeted at actual suspects
- Standard messengers like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and email providers like Gmail and Outlook fall under this scanning obligation

If you want to keep your communications private going forward, here are the tools that were built specifically to resist this:
- Encrypted messengers: Threema, Matrix and Element.io, or Signal
- Encrypted email: Posteo or Tuta Mail, both of which refuse to support this kind of mass scanning
- Operating systems: Linux instead of Windows
- Mobile operating systems: GraphenOS or LineageOS instead of stock Android

Hi all, I am currently working on building something I have tried since a kid, a search engine with its own index. Most 'privacy focused' simply pass the query to google or bing (except brave search), or add a lot of ai in between the results. The index is still really small (so if any sites are missing please do add them via the form), but I am mostly wondering the following:

Two new power features for users who want to move fast. Shortcuts let you trigger features directly from the search bar: /m opens a weather widget, /c opens a calculator, /ai triggers an instant AI overview generated entirely within our European AI infrastructure. QuickSearch lets you type !w climate change to jump directly to Wikipedia, !yt to YouTube, !gh to GitHub, !r to Reddit, all without an intermediate results page and without any third-party bang service logging your behaviour. 🇩🇪 German language results are now fully supported, with Austria and Switzerland coverage included, as part of our ongoing expansion across European languages.

The iOS app is updated today. The Android app including a FOSS release on F-Droid is in active development and coming soon, making xPrivo one of the very few search applications committed to being installable without touching Google infrastructure at all.
