Help! How do you cut straight lines?

Hi all! I’m new to the miniature life and am completely obsessed. I’ve started working on crafting a doll house from scratch, but I’m finding I’m having a really hard time cutting balsa in a straight line. I’ve been measuring and drawing pencil lines, and then using a metal ruler to use as my straight edge while cutting with a utility knife, but they’re still coming out janky.

Any help is appreciated!

Has anyone here found who they thought were their bio parent(s) and then found out through DNA testing that they weren’t?

I recently met my potential bio dad (he and bio mom were got married when she found out she was pregnant and told him it was his), but there is enough doubt that he may not actually be my dad.

He and I have discussed a paternity test and he is leaving it up to me. He’s fine either way and his motivation to reach out to me was primarily to give me an opportunity to ask questions that I’ve probably had my whole life but didn’t get answers.

I’m not sure the extent of where our relationship is going to go to start with, but I’m worried about what may come of it if we do a test and find out he’s not.

I’d like to think that I wouldn’t care since I’ve gone this long without, but wondering what will actually bubble to the surface if that’s the outcome.

I’m also worried about how he will take it as bio mom is a fucking awful person and really hurt him so bad that he’s carried that trauma with him for almost 40 years and really hasn’t talked it through with anyone that whole time.

Meeting my “possibly maybe” bio dad.

Hello all! First time ever on this sub, so I hope my post is allowed. I kind of don’t know who to talk to about this, so I figured a bunch of internet strangers was the choice.

Little background: I (38F) was adopted by my maternal grandparents when I was very young. Prior to adoption, I lived with my bio mom and her husband (who may or may not be my bio dad). Basically the theory is, because she was so young (16), that there were a few contenders that might be my dad but the guy she married was the most likely to stick around.

I’ve always known I was adopted and have a vague memory of it happening, but was only like 2 or 3, so not really. I grew up feeling like I couldn’t ask a lot of questions - I don’t think my parents ever made me feel like that, it was more that I worried they would think that my wanting to know things would make them feel like I was ungrateful? - so I didn’t have a lot of details and found out pieces here and there throughout my life.

My bio mom has been in and out of my life through the years but I’ve practically gone no contact with her in the last 5 or so years short of major family emergencies when we had to talk. She has a lot of issues and has no interest in following anyone’s rules or boundaries if they are inconvenient to her, so I finally said I was done so that I could have the happy and healthy life I deserved. I never really had the desire to meet or know my maybe might be bio dad, but in 2017 I decided that I wanted to see if I could find him.

It took a lot of searching but I did. I reached out and while he was very kind and thoughtful, he did not want to meet or talk about things. I completely understood, told him that, and left it at that.

Fast forward to last week, he randomly reached out to me and asked if I would still be interested in meeting and talking and said he’d been thinking about the whole thing a lot lately.

So we’ve had a few text messages back and forth and he works close to where I do and we decided to meet for lunch on Thursday.

He said he’s shy and a bit nervous but looking forward to talking and I said I’m also nervous but looking forward to it. I’m not sure how to approach the day, do I let him initiate all the conversations? Do I try to initiate so he doesn’t feel so shy and awkward? I have no expectations in any capacity, so I’m not that worried about myself, but do care about not making him feel shitty about anything because he was just a kid when I was around and had really hard choices to make.

Anyway - thanks to anyone who read this whole thing. I’d love to hear some thoughts, personal experiences, warnings and suggestions if anyone has them.

What book do you want made into a movie but know there’s little chance it ever would?

Is there a book you love and desperately wish someone would make it into a movie, but know it’s probably never going to happen? And what reasons do you think it couldn’t / wouldn’t be made into a movie?

Mine is probably either The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by AVI, or Graveminder by Melissa Marr. Both unlikely because they aren’t super popular mainstream books now, or in the past.

We all know how much a person changes between 20 and 30, but what are some changes between 30 and 40 that might be unexpected?

Is Pizza Crust Welcome Here?

I’ve done a few pizza doughs in the last but am ready to pick it up again to give it a whirl.

Hit me with y’all’s favorite and or fool-proof recipes!

Edit to add: would love recommendations for a pizza stone to use in a regular home oven (conventional, gas) - hoping to take advantage of Prime Day!

[TOMT][TV or Movie] Quote About Sex

I distinctly remember watching something - either TV or a Movie - in the mid 2000s where someone (I believe a man) says “I believe in sex seven times a day. Before breakfast, after breakfast, before lunch, after lunch, before dinner, after dinner, and once in the middle of the night.”

I’ve tried searching online but nothing that comes up is what I’m looking for. It may have come out prior to 2000s, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t super old at the time.

Help!

Looking for movies to help me learn Spanish.

I’m working on learning Spanish and I’ve found listening to movies in Spanish in the background while I work has been super helpful. I can’t do “dubbed” unless it’s really really well done - it just never quite sounds right even if you’re not watching it actively.

I’ve watched El Orfanato a million times and Pans Labyrinth quite a few times too, so that’s what I tend to gravitate to, but I’m open to other genres too.

Thanks in advance!!

Girls trip in August - need some direction!

Hello all!

My sister and I are taking a girls trip in August and want to stay in Old San Juan. I’m trying to decide where the best place is to stay, along with a few other things. I’m to keep it around $800-900 per person for the total flight and hotel, knowing that food/drink/activities will be additional. Currently I’m looking for a hotel for about $250 ish a night for 3 nights.

Would love suggestions for:

• places to stay that don’t break the bank, but also weren’t super sketchy or nasty

• Things to do / see that aren’t tourist traps or might be a local secret that tourists don’t know about.

• Restaurant and bars - as mentioned, we’re trying to keep this budget friendly and I know food and drink are going to be the main killers on that, so maybe one or two must have for an elevated meal and then some ideas for just good old local loved cheaper options.

• Dancing? Not sure if we’ll want to do this but maybe one night we might want to hit the nightlife scene and go dancing.

Here are the couple places I was looking at staying, so any feedback on if they are big red flags, too good to be true, not worth the price, or any other warnings or thoughts, I would really appreciate it!!!
• La Terraza
• Alma
• El Colonial
• El Convento

Am I the only one that desperately wants more horror where there are no happy endings, no survivors, no hope, no set up for a sequel?

I’m hard pressed to name even five movies that have this outcome - am I just missing it, or is this a serious “flaw” in our horror movie repertoire?

I’d love to see everyone’s list any that might not be super well known!

Edit: wow! I got more replies than I expected! Thank you all so much. I fully intend on going through all your recs in detail. From what I’ve seen in the comments at first glance I’m finding a lot of new ones to check out and reminders of some older ones I forgot about!

Between my wordsmith nature and handwriting (which I personally think is not great) I have become the person everyone comes to if a nice sentiment is to be penned or a message transcribed for office cards.

Here is mine from today for our receptionists retirement.

I think mine would probably be a Pacojet. Unless I was able to fully remodel my kitchen and then it would be two ovens that could do convection and conventional options.
