14 years of charger evolution: smaller size, higher power

I came across a video showing how chargers have evolved from 2011 to 2025. It really made me realize how much charger design has changed over the years.

The most interesting part is the difference in design between older and newer models. Older chargers took up much more space, while modern chargers can deliver higher power in a much smaller form factor. Behind this change are improvements in power conversion technology, more compact internal layouts, better control systems, and improved thermal management.

As a look at how a single product category has evolved over 14 years, I think it’s an interesting example of how technology has progressed.

What actually needs to stay on during a studio power cut

My desktop, audio interface, monitor speakers and other studio gear are currently spread across two older UPS units, and both batteries are getting close to replacement.

Looking at my setup again, I’m realizing I may not need everything backed up. If the power drops, the main thing I need is enough time to save the session, finish any file transfers, and shut down my computer and interface properly. The speakers and other non-essential gear can wait.

Reducing the load would probably make replacing the batteries a lot simpler and cheaper. I think I’ve been treating every piece of gear in my studio like it has the same priority when it really doesn’t.

Curious how others handle power backup for their studios. What equipment do you consider essential during an outage?

DAE charge all their devices at the same time like some kind of ritual before bed

Every night I plug my MacBook, phone, and AirPods into the same charger in the same order, like some kind of bedtime routine. MacBook first, then phone, then AirPods.

If I do it out of order, it weirdly feels wrong. I think I've accidentally turned charging my devices into a little nightly ritual and now I can't stop.

small things that make you feel like you've got your life together

I definitely don't have my life together, but every now and then there's a tiny thing that makes me feel like I'm doing okay.

A while back I replaced the pile of chargers on my nightstand with a single multi-port charger. Now my phone, laptop and earbuds all charge from one outlet overnight, and I don't wake up to a tangled mess of cables anymore.

I also bought bright green charging cables because I kept losing the black ones in the dark. It's such a small thing, but every time I reach over at night and instantly grab the right cable, I feel oddly satisfied.

Taking the baby camping next month

We're doing Algonquin for 4 nights next month and I EP 5x a day. My husband keeps saying I'm overthinking it (he's probably right) but I really don't know how milk storage works at a campsite. The pumping itself is fine since my wearable pump runs off the charging case and I won't need an outlet, but what do I do with the milk afterwards? Just put it in a cooler with ice and hope for the best?

If anyone has done this before I would love to know how you handled the milk storage part because I really have no idea:((
