The 65" C8L has arrived in the office, and I’ve spent most of the day going through the different settings and picture options.

I tested it while watching Doctor Strange in IMAX Enhanced mode, which felt like the perfect way to show off the display. The near-zero border really adds to the experience and makes the picture feel incredibly immersive.

First image I just wanted to show the most colourful image - trying to display the new Super Quantum Dots and BT2020 colour space.

A few things I didn’t know before:

At the moment, you’re not limited to Dolby settings only. Since we’re still waiting for the release of Dolby Vision 2, we can’t yet fully reach the peak of what SQD technology is capable of, especially when it comes to the higher nit performance.

There is also now a Vivid Mode option while watching streaming content. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend using it straight out of the box (for obvious reasons). I’d suggest going into the settings and tuning the picture to your own preference. For example, using Gamma 2.6, a warmer colour space, and more natural image settings gives a much more balanced and natural picture.

For film content, Natural Cinema appears to be the best setting for 24p playback, giving the image a more natural feel while avoiding that overly processed “soap opera” look. (Which is available on Android 14)

Both Premium metal remote + standard TCL remote included BUT only two TCL batteries so pick which you prefer...

The new premium remote also had a slight upgrade. It allows quick picture setting changes by click the right button (Picture 4), and there are dedicated brightness controls on the side with [+ / -] buttons. Finally the backlit buttons so you can see what you're doing in a dark room.

With Arsenal on the brink of history and a packed run of sport ahead - from major football finals to F1 and more , I thought I’d share my personal picture settings.

(Disclosure they may not be the best - I want to find the best!)

I’d also like to hear what others are using so we can hopefully find the absolute best and optimal options for different TVs, devices, and sports.

All sports are different, I was asked about Hockey recently but being from the UK, I've never personally seen a hockey game...

My settings are mainly aimed at stopping the greens from looking too saturated. Some people may prefer a more vibrant picture, but personally I like mine to look a little more muted and natural, especially when watching sports.

These are my personal settings for the C7K, but I know everyone has their own preferences. Many people also use NVIDIA Shield, Apple TV boxes, or other external devices, so it would be really interesting to hear those setups too.

I've often wondered about the need for the black borders on our home TVs - especially if you have a TV with Zero Borders - but then you view content you get two black borders at the top and bottom. Outside of blu-ray players, there is streaming content available that take these away however...

Currently available on specific streaming platforms : Disney & Rakuten in the EU

I've put together a few different comparisons of how IMAX content can give you a more immersive movie night at home. It makes you want to go back and rewatch some classic super hero movies all over again adding a layer of new things to discover!

IMAX content on Disney+ features an expanded aspect ratio of 1.90:1. This differs from most films where the picture appears wide but does not take up the full height of your screen*.*

It is important to note that on some movies it's not the same throughout the entire movie, which confused me when first making these comparisons.

IMAX Enhanced content may be mastered using IMAX’s DMR post-production process. IMAX Enhanced-certified devices are certified to play that content within IMAX/DTS requirements, but a separate IMAX picture mode or additional live TV-side processing is device-dependent. [Deston Bennett]

Admittedly It's hard to get further information on how this actually works - It has the Dolby Vision on all content for me. [I also checked my other branded TVs]

You will also find Bang & Olufsen audio featured across TCL’s premium Mini LED TV range, with the X11L being the standout model. This features a forward-firing sound system, designed to project audio more directly into the room rather than relying only on down-firing speakers.

I had the chance to hear the X11L on display, paired with FlexConnect using four Z100 speakers and a single Z100 Bass positioned in the centre.

The flexibility is the interesting part.

FlexConnect gives you more freedom over where the speakers are placed, rather than forcing a fixed surround setup. The TV and speakers work together to adapt the sound around your room layout.

Bang & Olufsen also brings Beosonic to these TVs.

Beosonic works like a built-in sound equaliser, giving you more control over the TV’s audio profile. Rather than only using standard presets, you can fine-tune the sound to suit what you are watching.

To access it:

Go to the TV sound presets
Select Custom
Open the Beosonic tab (0.39 in the video)

From there, you can adjust the sound character more directly, whether you want something brighter, warmer, more energetic, or more relaxed.

The process starts with a jointly customised acoustic architecture, where the speaker layout is designed around the TV’s body, internal space, and sound direction.

From there, the hardware is developed with B&O, then tuned using proprietary B&O sound technology. This helps control frequency balance, dialogue clarity, bass response, distortion, and overall sound staging.

The system is then stress tested in B&O laboratories, tuned for months by B&O sound engineers, and individually calibrated on each unit for consistent performance.

The speaker structure includes:

1. Centre channel For clearer dialogue and voices that feel locked to the screen.
2. Immersive surround channel For a wider, more spacious sound field.
3. Dual deep-bass subwoofers For stronger low-frequency impact from a slim TV body.

Each speaker channel is designed, tuned, tested, and calibrated as part of one complete system, giving the TV cleaner dialogue, deeper bass, and more immersive sound without relying only on external audio equipment.

A Behind the Scenes with Gabriel Jesus, Martin Ødegaard, and Martín Zubimendi, and the TCL X11L SQD-Mini LED TV ( far less important but I was there too! ) see picture 2.

Yes I'm hidden by the TV.

My job was to transport and set-up the X11L at the location. The box barely fit in the van, and had to really squeeze it in... for some reason this box was substantially larger than the average 85 Inch TV.

Issues include:

1. No Kettle Plug in the box - whomever had used it previously forgot to put it back...
2. HDMI green was too vibrant so wasn't camouflaged at all.
3. Extension lead was too small, so I had to hunt for multiple cables in 30mins.

The only X11L in the UK at the time, being booked into the Euronics CIH showcase the day after and under strict instructions "Don't break the TV"... making the whole experience pretty terrifying.

The panel is rated for 98.5% DCI-P3 and 99% sRGB coverage.

sRGB is the standard colour space for web and desktop content, while DCI-P3 is commonly used for HDR and modern video formats.

Finally upgraded our QD-MiniLED C7K in the office

In our Studio we replaced the C7K with the brand new C7L-SQD MiniLED TV - You don't notice the improvements until you first remove the pesky 30% (eco-mode) brightness and change the settings for best appearances. (Gamma: 2.2, Colour: Warm 4 etc)

The new C7L has more dimming zones, brightness (nits) but the main differences comes from the overall usage of colour - once you have the settings right the colour does stand out especially in the reds.

There was one thing I noticed when checking the motion is "nature Cinema" while my C7K now has "Natural Cinema" This is not a consumer product and is post production so somebody with the real deal will have to let me know! Unless we now have a dedicated David Attenbough mode I suspect this to be a mistake.

A few minor things to note, the side of the TV now has.... SQD-MiniLED believe it or not, however we still have yet to update the signage in the studio above it.

Local Dimming is now replaced with Micro Contrast. The contrast looks incredible however I know for just £100 more you can get the 55" C8L and that will be my TV of choice going into 2026!

It's now set up in the office and ready for independents to come and check it out in person before sending out the official samples for review!

Overall its a bump in performance - but most notable is the colour pop. I've got home and watching Avatar on my C7K and it looks great and for the prices that may come with the launch of the new products it's still the smart choice right now!.
