Interesting choices of music

So playing this for the first time I was blasted by Danheim's norse music at the menu and also in that one cutscene

and then later on in the Horns of the south castle/fortress place I immediately recognized the song as "Moon over the ruined castle" Which is basically a classical japanese song(it played in cyberpunk during the parade too if you know that!), and in the soundtrack it's listed as "moon over the horned castle"

Now, I don't wanna sound like a douche since I DO like Danheim and the cover of Moon over the ruined castle... but isn't norse music completely different from Arthurian myth? and also the song in the Horns was a bit surprising

I suppose I don't think I've ever seen any other game use non-directly associated songs in their main menus or use adaptations of existing songs just for random ost

Not hating tho! I do really enjoy the original ost so far!

My two cents on the issue of "Illusion of choice" and why I play CRPGs for roleplay, not choice.

This is all subjective, of course!

The "illusion of choice" debate is as old as time in the CRPG community, and every time it comes up, I have the same tired reaction. To be fair, I've only been a CRPG fan for a couple of years compared to some people here, but this topic appears even in older discussions. Frankly, I think placing heavy value on "choices mattering" is silly. Sadly for me, the concept seems to be in every corner of CRPG discourse and it even has its own Steam tag!

But when have our choices truly mattered? I know a lot of examples can be cited, but they always vary on their levels of how surface level they are or how little they affect the overall story, most choices end up being superficial, and to ask for anything more than that is, in my opinion, impossible.

This is an obvious point, but I'm going to say it anyway. For example, in BG2, why can't we decide not to save Imoen? Or in WotR, why can't we disobey Galfrey? Or in BG3, why can't we fully side with the leaders of the Cult?

For me, CRPGs are not about every choice mattering or every action creating a ripple, they are about roleplaying a character. In Rogue Trader, no matter what you do, you eventually have to go after Calcazar. However, the reason it's my favorite CRPG is the extremely wide range of options you have regarding WHO you want your character to be. Most of these choices don't actually "matter" to the overarching plot, but I've played it four times from start to finish, and every single playthrough has felt significantly different. Even though the same major events happen and you fight the same enemies, every playthrough has felt different for me

I roleplayed a "kind" Dogmatic Priest (basically a Salamander mentality, if you know your 40k lore)

I roleplayed a fully merciful Iconoclast Psyker from a hive city

I roleplayed a self-serving, arrogant, xenotech obsessed noble who wasn't religious at all and had very large ambitions

I roleplayed a completely fanatical Dogmatic Priest.

In all four runs, I picked different options and saw different SURFACE level things. While the choices didn't "matter" in a world-altering sense, every single playthrough felt completely unique. To me, that is what CRPGs are truly about, another example of this would be the classes in BG3, which was the highlight of that game for me, practically every class had A LOT of unique dialogue options compared to any other CRPG i've ever played, and that is what let me roleplay so many different characters, even though most of those dialogue options had the same outcome as another dialogue option, my Druid felt extremely different from my paladin, and my paladin from my wizard

Is wizard playthrough different enough?

So I'm gonna play poe1 for the first time, I think i played deadfire a long a go I dont remember much of it

Basically is being a wizard cool enough :)?

I love being a wizard in dnd and dnd adjacent settings but only if there's enough acknowledgement that youre a wizard! For example in bg1-2 as far as i remember it changed pretty much nothing, there were no dialogues no nothing, and I know comparing any game to bg3 is a bit annoying but I will say that there was good amount of class acknowledgement there

So if the game treats you as non magical I might as well play a non magical class.... specially if other npcs are wizards and they treat you as non magical

Anyway if not, i'm thinking paladin?

Is Tainted Grail for me? When it comes to main story and sidequests is it more like bethesda or obsidian?

Maybe I'm bad at finding info but I can't seem to find a good answer on this

I basically DON'T enjoy the bethesda style of exploration of a huge world with like 2 towns and a hundred dungeons or their 1 million sidequests which are all "get 4 skeleton arms from dungeon #634538, return to quest giver"

I prefer obsidian rpg quests and world which are much less exploration, more character interactions, and the main quest has you make a lot of choices and sidequests ALMOST ALWAYS have something interesting to interact with or characters to talk or decisions to make instead

so tldr I don't like huge world exploration when there's nothing but combat and dungeons and prefer "deeper" sidequests and interacting with npcs

I don't really know how to phrase my question... i've been looking at whether it's "linear" or not but everyone seems to have different definitions of linear than me, so i think my question is whether this is a more obsidian like game or bethesda like game when it comes to characters and quests

I wish they would confirm whether there is a character creator/customization or not

Its such a big part of an rpg and with rpgs like Fable and Expanse coming around the same time I'm concerned this is gonna be a much more linear story than them

I personally really would prefer to not be "Jun" but I understand why they went this direction considering mass effect, but at the very least I would hope that there's gonna be character customization aside from the rpg factor of it and my personal dislike of jun's appearance, what about players that would like their character to be a different skin tone?

not having these things CERTAINLY doesn't mean it can't be good, but i just wish it was clarified

I PERSONALLY don't usually play linear narrative set-protagonist games and I'm a bit curious as to how exactly linear this game is going to be

once again, not saying it would be bad if it is, but for me personally? I think I can safely cross it out my list if it's like that, IF IT IS THOUGH, I hope it is a good linear narrative game for that audience, not trying to be an a-hole

On Dark Heresy story length

Not a hate or criticism post btw, just an opinion, i am extremely excited for DH

we were told that Dark Heresy was gonna be "shorter but broader"

And a lot, A LOT of people were really happy with that... but is there anyone else that's just a bit bummed out? I know it's unrealistic to ask for it to be broad and long, even more so with voice acting, but I was just a bit bummed out that so many people were so happy with the game apparently going to be shorter when even with Rogue Trader I was left wanting more, I wished that the last act was just as long as the others

If the last act hadn't existed in the first place that would've been kinda sad for me, we got to see so much cool necron stuff, fights, and quests that just wouldn't have been there...

Also Expanse game is gonna be shorter than most owlcat games WHICH IS PERFECTLY FINE as a non isometric game it would be unreasonable want it to be as long as others but I suppose i'm just a bit bummed out it seems owlcat wants to go for more compact rpgs?

Don't get me wrong, i don't think short rpgs are bad, disco elysium is technically by scale of game content, rather small and it's a great game for example, but what I always loved about Owlcat was to play huge games to really enjoy a loooot of quests and really getting into the world.

I guess i'm just wondering if anyone else wasn't ecstatic about it being shorter

What's with the extreme sexualization of Yrliet?

Not trying to shame anyone, nor am I a puritan. I literally made a post saying how I wish the corsair guy is romanceable and "not like Yrliet," lol. I'm also not saying that it should stop or that it's wrong or anything, whatever floats your boat.

I'm just curious because it seems like a bit of a weird headcanon that everyone just takes as canon. For example, there's not an abundance of "when our Sororitas gf has the sexy sex with us" memes like there are for other romances simply because she's not a romance option aka no sexual or implied interactions with her.

And once again, I am not trying to shame anyone, but I never understood it. It seems a bit strange and wrong TO ME. Yrliet is obviously physically repulsed by us purely by the fact we're human, and the romance goes to great lengths to really spell out that nothing happens physically between the RT and her. She even (iirc) breaks up the romance if you even IMPLY you want to "do her" in that scene in your room, and her romance is extremely unique in that way. Tbh, I always thought it was an amazing romance story that didn't require sex, on top of it being a great asexual option.

Again, I'm not a puritan, nor am I trying to say you're a horrible person or anything, she's just a character. But on that note, it seems so out of left field, specially if you went through her story AND like her as a character, wasn't that kinda the point?

I will preface by saying that I am a huge Disco Elysium fan and regardless of THE controversy, i want this game to succeed, having played the Demo i am very hopeful for the game and i don't want this to be the end of the current creative/dev team of Zaum

however I am very concerned that it won't sell well

I realize I am almost literally echoing the previous post in this subreddit but that's kinda my point, this sub is practically dead, the official videos get barely a couple thousand views if even and even the recent trailers have low views, it releases in 18 days and there doesn't seem to be much hype for it?

I am hoping that it pulls an Esoteric Ebb and is hugely popular on launch

idk man i kinda just want more games like this regardless
