Is the Lovecraftian Mythos meant to appeal to masochists?

There is the consistent theme of the Elder God cults and the lower "servent" entities worshipping beings of vast power which are indifferent or even malicious towards those who put them on pedestals. This leads me to believe most of my exes were Elder Goddeses lol.

I find something bittersweet and even romantic in the futility of glorifying and serving things which dwarf their adherents in power + scale, and which view their cult followers as insignificant simps to ignore or torment unto madness. I would even wager that Lovecraft delighted in, if not nihilism exactly, a kind of symbolic theological masochism, of at least found it meaningful to explore this theme, as opposed to the common forms of religious devotion in which the faithful are rewarded with mutual benevolence.
