Our Kennedy Center

Residents of Virginia, did you know that Senator Warner of Virginia is a member of the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees? Please use your clout as his constituent and urge him to ATTEND THE BOARD MEETING on August 13th. Likewise, if you live in New York, Sen. Chuck Schumer is also on the Board, as are Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, Sen. Whitehouse of RI, Sen. Van Hollen of MD, and Sen. John Thune of SD. Also Mayor Bowser of DC!

Ex officio members don't usually bother to attend these meetings, but they can, and are entitled to participate fully. This meeting is possibly one of the most important in the history of the Kennedy Center. The Board will be voting whether to close the Center for two years for renovations, or to do the renovations in stages as originally planned, so that the building can remain open and operating as a performing arts center in accordance with its mission.

Short is best. If you call, plan out your own succinct script. (My own "talking points" are: Please attend the meeting on the 13th; Vote for phased repairs to keep the building open and functioning as an arts center; and approve the National Symphony Orchestra budget.)

Thank you for considering this small action.

P.S. The "spite tarp," alas, is still there, but the name is definitely gone.

Edited to add in Mayor Bowser!

App alternatived

Does anyone have experience with Voice Audiobook Player on F-Droid? I have a few very large DRM-free audiobook files that came off old LPs I had when I was a kid. Playing them on my usual music player app is double plus ungood.

How do you sign up for Audible Rewards?

I am a longtime member with over a thousand titles in my library, but I don't have Audible Rewards showing anywhere.

Seeking a high-energy setting of Edna St. Vincent Millay's poem 'Recuerdo'

Years ago I listened to many rather dreary settings of Edna St. Vincent Millay's poem 'Recuerdo' on YouTube, and fell in love with one of them that isn't dreary at all. It featured one or more male singers and guitar and maybe accordion or harmonica and sax or clarinet, and had kind of a kletzmer vibe. I have no memory of what the video looked like, but the tune is clear in my mind. I can't find it again on YouTube, and a second round of attempts to wade through the dreary artsy versions has depressed me. Any ideas?

This version included the entire poem, with a little extra repetition.

"Recuerdo" is the 1931 poem beginning:

"We were very tired

We were very merry

We had gone back and forth

All night on the ferry"

Austen Quote of the Day

A quote from "Sense and Sensibility" that one might apply to the temptation of responding to online trolls: "Elinor agreed to it all, for she did not think he deserved the compliment of rational opposition."
