to the guy walking his unleashed dog on the MBT this morning

When I told him it was dangerous to have an unleashed dog on a multi-use trail, he told me either to have a nice day or suck his d***, honestly couldn't tell which. In any case he didn't immediately leash his dog, no surprise.

If I could have another exchange with him, I'd say: have you considered that it's disrespectful to your fellow trail users? Every cyclist that passes you is going to be concerned with whether your dog might dart unexpectedly across the trail, and every fellow dog walker is going to be concerned with how your dog might interact with theirs. You may know your dog is well trained, but nobody else does. Besides--do you know your dog won't dart across the trail if a rat or squirrel does? You SURE about that?

Does anyone know what's up with this portion of trail?

I'm trying to go Point of Rocks and google maps is trying to take me through Poolseville vs just staying on the C&O Canal.

(I do not want to pay for an app!!)

Takoma to Piney Branch MBT plans

After 6 months of searching, I found a map and plans for the Takoma to Piney Branch segment that will finally complete the Metropolitan Branch Trail. Construction is due to begin fall 2026.

https://mbt-pineybranch-blairrd.ddot.dc.gov

Even though there are enough neighborhood-ish roads to get around the area, there are not enough dedicated bike lanes! I have been almost hit, screamed at, and aggressively tailgated WITH my toddler on back of my bike. I'm so excited for this to be completed.

NOVA neighborhoods for everyday biking?

If you moved to NOVA, what neighborhood (not just like 'Arlington') would you pick to live where a lot of everyday life (grocery store, taking kids to school, going to the playground etc) could be conducted on bike? Ie the best slice of urban living in the burbs?

They did it!

Several months ago I was at a DDOT open house and asked one of the employees why DC didn’t have bike lane color differentiation on Google Maps like NYC does. They didn’t even know that existed, so I pulled up an example in Manhattan and the person seemed excited and told me they’d look into it.

Today I opened Maps and there it was! Now you can visually compare Google’s recommended routes and see which holes in the bike lane network you’re most likely to be hit by a MD or VA driver in the middle of (or convince your bike-shy friends that c’mon, it’s ok, the K-Hole is only like two blocks of sidewalk or traffic dodging). Shout out DDOT midlevel employees, keep up the good work, sorry about your boss!!!

How can we stop this?

The bus/bike lane on H St. between 16th and 15th has parked trucks or busses 100% of the time on weekday mornings, forcing cyclists into busy lanes of traffic. It’s dangerous and also emblematic of the city’s lack of traffic enforcement.

Anyone know if the water fountain in Vienna on the W&OD is working?

Hey DC cycling hive mind. Anyone know if the Vienna W&OD water fountain is working? It wasn’t operational went I rode through last week and 95°+ for the next three days has me weighing hydration strategies.

With that water fountain down that means there’s no water between Falls Church and Herndon (as far as I’m aware. If I’ve missed a water fountain anywhere I’d love to know, I’m shocked there’s not one in Reston and would absolutely love to be wrong!)

Biking to Glendstone

Free entry to Glendstone museum without any reservation needed if you arrive by bike! They do not advertise this on their website because they believe it will encourage people to come by bike and they think it’s too dangerous.

It’s not too dangerous if you know how to road bike. Very frustrating that this isn’t answered anywhere online. But reporting live 5/16/2026. Free entry by bike.

Hi! Is there any group for chill bike rides where people could just join with capital share bikes and do shorter trails at a chill pace? After work or weekends and maybe drinks or brunch after?

Don't Sleep on Tiny Streets, Sunday at 4pm

If you've never been to a Hill Family Biking ride, the Tiny Streets ride is the perfect intro!

Meeting at Maury Elementary parking lot (on a tiny street!) at 4pm on Sunday, hundreds of riders will weave through a route of charming one-block "tiny streets" providing both a unique and picturesque tour of Capitol Hill and a wacky bike ride that will keep your toes.

And for the first time in over 50 HFB rides, we're hosting a ride day giveaway. For every $50 raised, we'll giveaway a prize from either Hiplok or Woom!

To anyone who saw the storm coming and decided to go to Bike Party tonight anyways.

Hope you make it home safe! That was a lot of rain a lot of fast. I learned my brakes don't really work in that much rain as I escaped into the nearest Metro station.

Bike party turned into bike disperse and shelter.

Detour Coming for Gravelly Point Construction

The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) is putting a temporary detour in place as part of the Long Bridge Project, the 1.8-mile rail overhaul that will eventually relieve one of the worst freight and passenger bottlenecks on the East Coast. The detour goes into effect around May 22nd and stays in place until construction wraps in 2030.

Remember to always call the police if you're hit by a car

Howdy y'all. My husband was hit by a car while biking through Georgetown last night and I thought he knew this but if you're hit by a car make sure to call the police, get insurance information and not bike off until a report is filed. My husband didn't know this and got pictures and rode home.

WABA has a great article on what to do if you're in a bike crash here: https://waba.org/resource/what-to-do-after-a-bike-crash/

Luckily my husband took a picture of the license plate and drivers license of the driver and we found city video of the crash and filed an accident report afterwards at our local station. The police man was helpful and responsive in getting us video of the crash thankfully. The cop said ALWAYS call 911 if you're hit by a car, even if you feel ok in the moment, you may not be! Now all we've got left is getting him seen by a doctor.
