Shoutout to Brookland scooter lady

I support the Taylor St NE/Fort Drive/Harewood/Rock Creek Church Rd protected bike lane corridor project for many reasons. Chief among them is this Brookland kick scooter lady.

On many mornings, I see a woman commuting on a large kick scooter westbound on the sidewalks of Taylor and the other roads in that corridor -- AT LEAST as far east as the South Dakota NE intersection and AT LEAST as far west as Harewood between North Cap and Rock Creek Church NW. This awesome lady pushes herself with a large backpack, a high-visibility cape over her bag, and a high-viz vest on her chest, all the way up that nasty Taylor Rd climb. She wears cycling gloves and a kickass pink helmet. Her scooter has serious disc brakes.

We should build our city so you don't have to be as brave and badass as this woman to use a bike or mobility device to commute. But we should never let detractors say people don't use active transportation already to commute. Rock on, scooter lady.

Sun Sept 13 - lowkey ride celebrating D.C. primary elections

Three D.C. organizations active in promoting transit and bike/walk political candidates are co-hosting a low-key election celebration ride on the afternoon of Sunday, Sept 13. Metro-accessible start and finish locations, close together, in safe-for-families infrastructure. GGWash, the local transit union, and the new Bike Walk and Bus PAC are the organizers.

While we all fight to keep ongoing projects actually moving -- Catholic U is back now, so I guess we don't get the MI Ave NE MBT-Crosstown connector path this year either?!? -- there is a lot to be optimistic about if you want safer street designs: Mayor-presumed Lewis George, pro-active transport Councilmembers-presumed Owolewa and Raj, plus pro-active transport Councilmember-again-already Silverman.

[Discussion] Update 127 to fix false positive tamper detection?

I have had the "camera glasses unavailable" and similar errors (e.g., obstruction on LED, etc) on two Gen 2 Ray-Ban Wayfarers since Update 126 hit them. I updated both devices to Update 127 this morning (ET in Washington, D.C.; running latest Android version on Pixel 9 Pro, using Google Fi for mobile data). I'm sharing in hopes that we can crowdsource whether false positives in tamper detection are reduced by Update 127 (and that the error stays low in future updates).

I have not tampered with either device. I use the still and video camera functions for my job. I'm a professional dog walker. I use the Ray-Bans to take photos and videos of my dogs for clients without pulling out my phone and losing situational awareness. I work with high-reactivity dogs in high-traffic environments. I also need eye protection, and the audio notification alerts keep me updated on client correspondence without pulling out my phone.

The Gen2 Wayfarers I bought 12 months ago from Amazon U.S. seem to still be bricked. Only the first of the two shutter sounds is triggered when I hit the capture button. The long-press for video does not start the recording sound. No image appears in the Meta AI app. The Gen2 Wayfarers I bought last week from REI seem to be working again: pressing the capture button triggers the correct sounds and images, and videos show up in the Meta AI app and sync to the cloud successfully.

Question: Has anyone else experienced these false positive tamper detections? Has Update 127 reduced the problem?

Extra Question: Have people found better reliability with other camera-and-headphone sunglasses? I am a working-class person with a struggling business. I can't afford to lose $550-$600 in equipment investments. I am looking forward to the release of the new Warby Parker X Google X Samsung glasses this fall, but would prefer a device that does not use AI. I wish that Insta360 or GoPro would make a "white label" version of this concept: the hardware stack of the Insta360 Go3 S in the body of the Wayfarer or similar frame.

Grant Circle safety looking better

New safety improvements to Grant Circle NW are looking great as the contractors progress on installation. You can see in this photo that the bike lane is now curb-protected, and the reduction to one vehicle travel lane means that the pedestrian crossing distance is now shorter, safer, and more comfortable. The installation progress is limited to this side of the circle, but it is exciting to see the beginnings of the new final configuration.

Thank you to everyone who fought for this walk and bike safety project for many, many years. This was a project Mayor Bowser's senior aide Beverly Perry killed after a 2017 study showed <1 min increased vehicle travel time. Then-Councilmember Brandon Todd was not interested in resurrecting it. Councilmember/Mayor-Designate Janeese Lewis George has pushed for it to be completed (along with many terms of supportive ANCs).

This is a good reminder that you can still pick up petitions to run for ANC commissioner, relatively easily collecting the 25-50 minimum signatures by Aug 5, and make sure your local street safety concerns don't get delayed by 5-25 years.

This is why I use a dash cam

I was nearly right-hooked on my bike by a driver traveling eastbound on K St NW in the Unit Block. This was 2 PM ET on June 18th. Despite the protected bike lane and the increased driver sightlines from the white flexpost "daylighting" space, this driver didn't check their passenger-side mirror. Sigh.

This is why I use a dash cam while riding a bike. And I recommend everyone who regularly bikes to get one. Mount something to your bike if you use your own bike, or get a light weight action cam to mount on the helmet you use for Bikeshare trips.
