CF vs SD Card in iPod Mini 2

Hi all,

What do you reckon is the best bet for the iPod Mini 2? I know I'd need an adapter for an SD card, but it is much less expensive for much more storage.

Would using one over the other improve performance or battery life - on Rockbox OR iPodOS?

Thanks :)

Thoughts on Dual SD Adapter for iPod classic 5?

Hi all,

I'd like to buy one of these adapters.

I presume you can just use the ribbon cable which used to be attached to the hard drive?

Does this need formatting at all, any soldering etc... or is it just 'plug and play' like with an Iflash Solo/Quad?

Would a 3000mAh battery be able to fit in a iPod classic 5.5 Thinback with this smaller SD Card adapter?

Thanks for your time :)

Will 3000 mAh Battery fit in iPod classic 5 THINBACK?

Hi all,

I'd like to buy a 3000 mAh battery for my iPod classic 5.5 Thinback, alongside an iFlash Solo.

I have heard some people say that a 3000 mAh battery won't fit with an iflash solo, and requires an iFlash Quad.

HOWEVER

I have heard some also say that a 3000 mAh battery (I would guess with the dimensions in the second image, but I'm not sure) DOES fit, provided it is placed underneath the iflash solo.

For anyone who has done this, could they confirm or deny if it is possible? If it is possible, is it easy enough, or is it simply less of a hassle and worth the bit more money to just go for the quad?

Thank you for your time :)

Is the iPod Mini 2 the BEST iPod for a TYPICAL User?

24 hours ago, I knew absolutely nothing about iPods. After a day of research, I am firm on sticking with the iPod Mini Gen 2 to mod, OR the iPod classic 5.5 30GB Thin-back to mod.

How I would mod the Mini 2:

Battery replacement

New shell

Flash SD-CF Adapter

128GB SD Card

Total (including the iPod) - about £120 / $160

How I would mod the Classic 5.5:

3000 mAh battery

New front/backplate and click-wheel

iFlash Quad (3000 mAh battery fits only with the Quad, not the solo)

128GB Micro SD Card (I hear that due to the RAM constraints of the Thin-back, the RAM would run out before reaching the limit of a 256GB SD Card so 256GB would be unnecessary ?)

Total (including the iPod) - about £170 / $225

What are your experiences with these iPods? Is one especially better/worse than the other for different things?

I like the bigger screen on the 5.5, but I would only use the iPod for music and the occasional film. I don't need to view photos and a calendar and games on an iPod, it's meant to be an escape from the mobile phone lifestyle!

That said, I do use album covers to identify songs a bit quicker, but it isn't necessary.

What's the size difference like hands on? Do they both fit in your pocket? I know the 5.5 is actually a bit thinner.

Do both use Wolfson DAC?

What is battery life like on either one (with replaced/upgraded batteries)? If the Mini could get me through a solid day that would be great.

I also hear that the search function is better on the Classic, especially when you have thousands of songs, please correct me if this is wrong.

Perhaps most importantly, what is the UI like on both iPods? What are the benefits/drawbacks of using iPodOS versus RockBox? The ease of use of the device is massively important!

I take it you can shuffle ALL songs at once, irrespective of playlist/album?

I don't think I'd use lossless on the iPods, but I'd like to use a 'good' sounding audio quality. I'm not an audiophile but I am an avid music enjoyer and occasional hobby producer so I'd like to know how many songs 128/256GB could realistically get me on both iPods, factoring in RAM constraints.

I know this is a lengthy one, but everyone was here at some point, and I know these 2 iPods are strong contenders for many people, so hopefully people can benefit from this post!

Thanks for your time :)

UPDATE - Best IPod to Mod for a TYPICAL USER

Thanks to everyone who engaged in my post yesterday. It got quite a bit of attention in the comments and I even got some helpful DM's, thank you all for your own takes!

Best IPod to Mod for a TYPICAL USER

Hi all,

I’m looking to buy an iPod. I’d like to mod it; to potentially change the ‘shell’, and change the battery and get an ssd (or equivalent) for more storage for songs.

I don’t need games or anything fancy, I’d just love a good media player which lasts a while and has enough storage for several thousand songs - I don’t need a 10,000 mAh battery with a 250GB SSD!!!

Aesthetically, I adore the iPod nano 5th gen but I don’t know how ‘modifiable’ this is. I hear the 5th/5.5 gen is a good choice?

What do you recommend for a reasonable price and what I will enjoy using, I don’t really want to spend hundreds and hundreds.

I simply don’t know where to start and I hope your support could help me join this really interesting looking community!

Thank you :)

How Far Apart Should Bonnet Stripes Be?

Hi all,

I've bought some bonnet stripes like the above, for my 2012 Mini Cooper R56 just like the above.

I'm new to this type of 'art', does anyone know how far apart the bonnet stripes should be/ their distance from the min logo/headlights? I don't want them to be asymmetrical!

How do I 'mark' where to put the stripes, with a Sharpie or similar?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

What size Gear Knob do I need?

I have a 1.6L 2012 Mini Cooper R56

My gear stick decided to come off while I was driving today. Needless to say I need to buy a new one so I can drive safely!

Official gear knobs are massively expensive, so I’d like to buy a generic, ‘non-mini’ gear knob for my car. Trouble is, minis don’t seem to use the generic gear sticks, as the metal itself on the mini isn’t threaded (2nd image) unlike most gear sticks.

I want to buy an adapter (4th image) to attach a non-mini gear knob to my car. Most adapters have 13mm circumference, but from my *rough* measurements (third photo), it seems that the r56 stick has a circumference of 71.5mm and a diameter of 13mm.

Could anyone confirm/correct my measurements, so I know what size adapter to buy so I can get back to driving! Thanks :)

Gear Shifter Help!

Hi all,

Long story short, The plastic around the gear stick, and the knob itself have broken on my car. I’m going to buy this black plastic replacement you see at the bottom. Notice at the base of the gear boot there is a black rubber washer. Someone online said a rubber washer of this size would suffice for my car:

Outer diameter - 40-45mm (1.6-1.75”)

Inner diameter - 17mm (0.67”)

Thickness - 2-3mm (0.08-0.1”)

I can’t find a washer of this size anywhere online.

I have found a similar size. It’s just a few mm off, would it still work or would it be too different in size to work?:

Outer diameter - 48mm

Inner diameter - 16mm

Thickness - 4mm

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Replacing Shifter / Gear Stick R56

Hi all,

I'd like to replace the gear stick on my 2nd generation Mini Cooper r56 2012. I'm looking at aftermarket ones. I understand that I can buy ones made specifically for the mini, but there are other's which appeal to me, like the image attached. How do I know what size, specifications etc.. will fit my mini? I'm inexperienced but would love to make this change to my mini. Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Root Patches Reverted by themselves? Help!!

Hi all, running a modded 27” 2011 iMac which has been in sequoia for about 6 months no problem with OCLP. Today I turned it on and seems as though root patches have been reverted. I tried to reinstall them and it tells me ‘make sure there are no pending updates’. The only available update is Tahoe, which has always been in setting but I never upgraded so I don’t know why it’s a problem now?

The root patching says there is an update in progress, there is not.

In settings, I have automatic updates off, download new updates when available is off.

Is anyone able to help please?

Thanks :)
