Stumblebum is Closing

From their FB post:

Friends and Fellow Travelers,

It is with a very heavy heart that I must announce our closure. While I take great pride in what we were able to build—great beer, great atmosphere, and great connections to our community—the challenges have become insurmountable. I won’t burden this statement with discussions of the economy or cost of goods. The fact that weighs most heavily on my mind is that businesses and people alike are all facing these challenges.

I opened our doors with the goal that this can be more than just a great place to drink great beer. It can be a force for good within our community. Our Rule 15 Initiative was born from this belief and that sentiment does not die when the doors close. In times like this it is important for all of us to focus on what really matters: family, community, and sometimes just making it through the days, weeks, and months. It takes dedication, energy, and sacrifice. It’s rarely easy, but always worth it.

I will close this chapter the same way I opened it, with the earnest belief that it is the people who matter. Our wonderful staff, our loyal customers, and those we’ve been able to help in hard times. The people are just as important to a brewery as the water, malt, hops, and yeast. My heart stays open for you should you ever need it.

Our full business hours will end on September 1st, but please keep an eye on our social media for service updates and opportunities for you in September to come get a beer, share some laughs, and say farewells while we spin down our operation. All scheduled August events, both public and private, will take place as planned.

Remember to help your fellow Hobos whenever and wherever you can. You may need their help someday. –Rule #15, Hobo Code of Ethics

Sincerely,

Eli “Stumblebum” Green

Found the80s book I'd been looking for for ages--it's gross

Every now and again, I remember a book that I read in my youth. Usually, I can find it with a quick Google search. But there was one that nagged at me. I tried Reddit's what's that book, to no avail. I remembered that it had a high school student who was majorly crushing on a photographer neighbor, along with other details. The problem was that I misremembered the location (I thought it was England; it was NYC) and the time frame (I thought it was just past WW2 when it was 1967). But thanks to ChatGPT (don't @ me please), I found it! It's called The Handsome Man. Simple enough.

Holy shit. The main character, Alex, and her friend run around The Village in NY. They smoke (whatever, it was the 60s!) That's fine. They have a nice neighborhood. Alex spies the titular handsome man in her neighborhood, and they go into a cafe where he is having a drink. He notices her, asks to take her picture, and she goes.

So this 14 year old girl goes to this 30 year old guy's apartment. She does note that WTF is she doing?? But she goes, he takes her picture, and she spends much time going on in her head how in love she is with him. So far, I mean, risky and gross, but he hasn't done or said anything awful.

Then he sees her at her "progressive" 6-12 junior high/high school and tells her to wear shorts more often because she has nice legs. And then, she sees him once more, and he kisses her.

I realize that all in all, it could have been worse, but the point is that I must have read this book a dozen times. NONE of that stood out to me. I remember facts about her brother, about the hat she always wore, about her wanting to be a writer, but nothing about how freaking gross it is that a grown ass man was kissing a 14 year old.

I just needed to tell someone. No one in my immediate circle has heard of this book. Thanks for letting me unload.

Avoid Southbound US 23

I was driving north to dixboro to see a play. It is closed going south. It looks like some sort of clean up crew so I'm not sure what all spilled. But it's a mess. Be safe out there!!!

Took a minute--but I LOVE this show

The first episode drew me in, and I immediately bonded with the Yana character, and then that fucking Night Witchbitch shot her. She controlled the fucking narrative! Say whatever you want, ho.

Anyway, I sort of slogged through episodes 2,3,4, but kept watching mostly because I kept reading the raves on here. They were so dark, violent, etc. I'm a Gen X American who grew up hearing that the Soviets were scary, waiting to blow us up, etc. (for a time, I was convinced that the KGB was bugging my bedroom, because I'm sure Irina would have loved listening to a 13 year old girl in suburban Detroit, Michigan), but certainly they couldn't be as bad and paranoid as all that, right? Again, they control the narrative! Whatever happens, just lie and make it work out to your favor.

By #5, I was back on board, and episode 6 absolutely hooked me. Those final three episodes were bonkers. I grew to love the Chief Designer (and Mrs. Chief), Valya, Tanya, Sasha, Stasia characters, and of course I love my Serg and Irina (she is what she is). Sasha is such a hotty, esp. with the beard!

I seriously hope that we get a second season. Right now, all of our loved ones are headed to the gulag, dead, or being tracked in Paris. Given, as we've said, ol Serg is in charge in about a decade, Sasha must sire our favorite Mars Governor, and Irina turns totally bad--well, they have to survive somehow. I'd like to see that somehow, even if I can't take any more torture scenes.

Just a few questions--so Valya was the one who planted the bug they found in FAM, right? (or caused it to be planted)? Did Sergei's buddy with the university connections rat him out, or was he kidnapped and they found the letter? (The latter is my guess, since I think he wasn't at work the next day?) Did we ever get any confirmation on Gordo's red lights?

Thanks for keeping me in this with your raves!!

Patricia, what the F are you doing?!

As a Patricia (well, Patti since I was 11), I need to thank the show writers for giving us the best character with our name. I could never find Patricia merch as a kid (always Pat--now, no offense to Pats, but I am not a Pat). There aren't any popular songs with our names (my friends in grade school were Jennys and Sarahs and they had theirs!) I heard there was a Patti in The Leftovers, but as a non-chain smoking non-cult leader, I really couldn't relate.

But here we have our girl!! I have lots of friends, and a great job, and I can leave my hometown without going blind, but I so identify with our queen. I showed my husband the "are you mad at something I said" scene, and oh boy could that man relate! And when painted my car in high school (I am an Old), we called it the Patti Wagon, not knowing that 35ishcoughcough years later, that name would be so special.

I have now taken to saying to myself, "Patricia, what the fuck are you doing?" when I inevitably do something odd (although so far not as odd as wearing a horn thing on my head and cutting up birds).

Thank you, show writers, for giving us our queen!!

This Stinks--Blom Meadery

I don't have any more info than this, but man another one bites the dust

ETA: My "source" is Michigan Cider Association. I have a friend who is a professional mead maker, and several amateurs, and they shared this info. I only shared this because I'm unhappy about it--and to encourage people to go there while you can and support local businesses. As my learned friend says, they aren't museums people.

Hello, all! I finished my first six weeks of compounded semaglutide. Twice in those six weeks, I have had severe lower stomach pain. Like, doubled over, couldn't move, on the floor of the bathroom, negotiating with God pain. Both times, I was in a cold sweat and shaking. Once I went #2 (a lot), it went away.

Has this happened to anyone else? I don't know if it's the medication or if I've eaten something that upset my usually normal stomach.

Thanks in advance for any insight!
