Sourcing bulk White Dutch Clover seeds for a 1-acre conversion. Is pre-inoculated worth the extra cost?
I am converting my one-acre back lot to a full clover lawn. I live in Zone 6b n need to time this right for a late summer seeding, about 6–8 weeks before our first frost in October. I have done the soil tests n the pH is right where it needs to be. The main hurdle I am hitting right now is simply the sourcing availability n the total cost of seed for an area of this size.
I carefully calculated that I will need roughly 20 lbs of seed to get solid, dense coverage, especially if I overseed to choke out crabgrass. My local Tractor Supply unfortunately only stocked small 1lb bags mixed with filler grass, which defeats the purpose.
I have been scouring the internet for days comparing bulk prices. I looked at Hancock Seed, sellers on Amazon,n even checked Alibaba clover flower seed listings. The price per pound varies wildly, from $5 to nearly $20 per pound for the fancy nitrogen coated stuff.
Has anyone here successfully done a total lawn conversion of this scale? Is it worth paying extra for the expensive pre-inoculated seeds,or should I just buy raw seed n the inoculant separately? Also,if you bought in bulk online, were the germination rates consistent? I really do not want to try n save twenty bucks on shipping only to have a giant mud pit in April.
