Today was a bit windy in London, so I decided to step out in a light tweed jacket

REAL MASTERY BEGINS

A suit makes dressing straightforward, because the work of creating harmony has already been done.

The jacket and trousers were cut from the same fabric on the same day to function as a single system. All you have to do is wear them correctly.

Odd garments remove this entirely. A jacket worn without its matching trousers demands that the man create the harmony himself, from scratch, with nothing in
place to help him and no built-in system to quietly absorb the mistakes he makes.

Every decision about colour, contrast, weight, and texture becomes his alone.

This is why most men look worse in casual and smart casual dress than they do in a suit. The suit corrects their errors automatically. The moment the matching system is removed, every error becomes exposed. Most men feel something is wrong when they stand in front of the mirror in an odd combination. They cannot name it.

They adjust things. The problem persists. This law names it for them and shows them precisely how to solve it.

THE PRINCIPLE THAT GOVERNS EVERY ODD COMBINATION

An odd combination of garments must look completely intentional. Not mostly.

A navy jacket over navy trousers of a slightly different shade does not read as a sophisticated separates combination. It reads as a
suit whose two halves were laundered separately and faded unevenly.

36°C in London today, so I decided to dress down in linen and sandals (though I did go into Dege & Skinner to pick up a new suit).

I always iron my linen shirts, even knowing they’re going to get wrinkled when I wear them. Taking the time to iron your shirt, preserves the structure and beauty of the fabric. It’s always better for your shirt to crease on you than to step out wearing a rumpled shirt.Starting with a freshly pressed shirt just makes the whole outfit look intentional.
