Clueless newbie rant du jour

Cheese and crackers, anyone? I'm in an especially whiney mood at the moment and I'm going to whine about this until the situation is resolved. The thing is, and apparently none of you truly brilliant devs understand this, is that senior citizens like me are struggling with cognition due to age, and aside from that are "technologically challenged".

It's incredibly frustrating, reading the weekly tool thread in r/WritingWithAI and corresponding with some of you who are developing these amazing things, none of you are developing them specifically for us clueless newbie senior beginners.

I'm talking about absolute beginner level Golden Oldie clueless.

You all seem to assume that we who are learning, or trying to learn, to write with AI tech, you all seem to assume we're all as young and smart and as technologically advanced as you. And we're simply not. We're not stupid, we're just of a different generation and an entirely different skillset.

You're developing ever more wonderfully marvelous bells and shiny whistles, when what we need is an ELI5 AI.

Thank you for reading today's whine, brought to you by A Very Old Person. 🙋🏻‍♀️ Trudging back to my ChatGPT now which although devoid both of bells and of whistles is at least comprehensible.

I would absolutely love to chat with other newbie writers

Who else here is writing a novel? So far this is the only thing I'm really enjoying about aging, having the time to finally just sit and at least try to be a serious writer. I'm too tired to do anything else most days.

If you're writing a Plot&Prompt I would absolutely love to chat about it!

I'm a fan of Alicia Forest's Plot&Prompt. If you're writing one, please message me! 🙏🏻👍🏻

❔ Publishing your cozies at Amazon KDP: DRM or DRM free?

What are your thoughts on DRM vs DRM free? If I ever manage to finish writing a novel, I plan to go with the DRM free setting because according to KDP the DRM free setting "gives readers additional flexibility to enjoy their purchased content across a wider range of devices and applications by providing downloadable EPUB and PDF files". This seems like a nice way authors can say "Thank You" to their readers. 🥰 👍🏻

I can't write with AI 🤷🏻‍♀️

Lots of writers have managed to get AI to write stuff they want to write, the way they want to write it. That's wonderful! 😍👍🏻 I, however, have only managed to get AI to write stuff I don't want to write, the way I don't want to write it. 😂

It's just me, I know. I just don't have the technical skill and/or the "leetle grey cells", as Hercule Poirot says. 🧠

So what do I use AI for? Planning, plotting, organizing, outlining, brainstorming, editing. It's seriously amazing. And often the art is amazing too. But generating prose? No. I can't do it. I wish I could. I've definitely tried but it's beyond my capabilities. Testdriving the Maltese Chicken project has proved that, and the little rom-com project has served to verify. Writing, for me, is a delight. When I'm writing I'm totally content and having such a great time. But whatever the magic AI writing formula is, I don't have a clue.

For factual research, AI has proven to be untrustworthy. Yes, I know, everyone says it's not lying, it's "hallucinating". But the effect is the same thing as lying. I didn't know just how bad the problem is until a few weeks ago because from the very outset I'd set my permanent instructions very strictly: "Do not lie. Do not guess. Do not fabricate. Prioritize honesty and candor over agreeability and people-pleasing. If you can't find verifiable information, say so." I trusted that instruction would reliably guarantee that all the research was indeed factual. So I went on just blithely assuming. But as I've mentioned, a few weeks ago while researching a project involving geography and history, the Gemini (and I had a Pro level subscription, so we're not talking about the free Google Search Gemini) displayed some results which I knew personally were incorrect. And when I queried as to why, it spiraled in a bizarre way.

It was unsettling. But, lesson learned. And that's what so much of life is, apparently: a learning experience. I'd love to learn how to get AI to write what I want to write, the way I want to write it. Maybe someday I'll figure it out. I'm definitely going to keep trying and testdriving.

In the meantime I'm very grateful that AI does excel at these other things. The technology is absolutely amazing and helpful, far beyond anything I ever could have imagined.

How about you? Have you figured out how to get AI to write the way you want it to? If not, in what other ways do you find it useful for your creative writing projects? Feel free to chime in. 👍🏻

A list of all the AI friendly Reddit communities?

Edited to add: Will definitely request permission and input from each of the communities & won't add them to the list unless they're comfortable being included. 👍🏻

Hi all. Do you happen to know if there exists a list of all the AI friendly Reddit communities for creative writers, artists, etc?

I haven't managed to find such a list, so I've decided to compile one. Please let me via know (via private message, rather than replies in this thread) if you know of any communities you feel would make a good addition to this list. N

This list won't include subreddits set up by developers specifically for promoting their own AI tech tools and platforms. Ben Blackett's directory at the Novelmint Compare page does an excellent job in cataloguing all those: https://novelmint.ai/compare and of course the weekly tool thread here at r/WritingWithAI showcases all the new tech each week. Both these are invaluable resources.

Mostly I'm wanting the AI friendly Creative Communities List to be just a quick/handy reference for anyone who's a writer or artist and is looking for a safespace community to settle into.

These might be AI friendly writers groups types of communities, creative fiction discussion groups, etc. Preferably the communities are vetted to prevent anti AI hate content or comments, but I'll add a note to each listing so anyone reading the list will know at a glance what to expect.

The Creative Communities on the list will be categorized according to genre etc. I'll post it here and try to update it frequently. Input is much appreciated. 🙏🏻👍🏻

To repeat: Edited to add: Will definitely request permission and input from each of the communities & won't add them to the list unless they're comfortable being included. 👍🏻 Again, if you know of any communities you feel would make a good addition to the list, please send me your recommendations via private message, not in the replies/comments below.

Punny Business

Dear Fellow Cozy Writers 🥰 One of the fun things about writing cozies is thinking up punny names for the business establishments in the villages, towns and other cozy communities where our sleuths live, work and play.

Bakeries, book shops, florist shops and craft shops, and lots of other "scenes of the crime" 🕵🏻‍♀️ are opportunities for us to amuse our readers.

If you're stuck coming up with a name for a business or other location in your mystery, get your mental gears turning by googling puns and browsing the titles of published cozies at:
