Acoustic gone electric

Greetings. Looking for input on finding great blues tone. While I agree that tone is definitely in the fingers, especially for the great guitarists, equipment plays a role. If you had a Jazzmaster Ultra and a Roland JC-40, which other gear would you use to get a great sound?

Thanks..

CMC Basal Joint fixes

I am a mid-50’s male who has a diagnosis of 1. Moderate to severe osteoarthrosis 1st carpometacarpal joint. 2. Probable old trauma radial styloid process. No acute fracture, subluxation, or dislocation. The 1st carpometacarpal joint demonstrates small osteophytes and severe joint space loss. There there is likely a small intra-articular body associated with the joint. Joint spaces are otherwise normal. No subchondral cysts or bone erosions. Irregularity of the radial styloid process may reflect remote trauma. SOFT TISSUES: No significant soft tissue swelling.

I also have significant pain from DeQuerviens Tenosynovitis in my left thumb primarily, but also in my right thumb.

I am wondering if any of you have had a trapezectomy, a bone-fusion, or if you had an implant like the Ensemble CMC, what was your experience like? How was recovery? Would you do it again?

I’m also wondering if any one has experience with PRP, any of those fancy peptides, or other newer solutions?

I’m struggling accepting that my condition is permanent and, while I’m not expecting to install a L-Hand 980, I am searching for solutions and want to temper my expectations on what those solutions might be.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your story.

Paddlers in Tahiti and Bora Bora

Hi friends. I returned last week from a fantastic visit to Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Rangiroa, and Tikehau. I am so grateful to everyone that made my trip so special, and especially to the Polynesian people who so graciously shared the pristine waters and beautiful environment there.

I am quite intrigued by the paddlers I saw while being shuttled to my destinations. I’ve attached some snapshots of them in case you redditors can assist in distributing them. I’m certain that there exists venues and groups online and within the community that these can be circulated. Hopefully they will make it to the subjects. Thank you in advance for helping.

If you know of a more direct avenue I can use (I’m sure there must be an online community of Polynesia canoe enthusiasts) please let me know. I’m not a French or Tahitian speaker but can try to share that way.

Thanks again!

Take your pick

Suppose you were to trick-or-treat my house to find this box and a sign with “choose one” written on it. Which would you choose?

Wave prediction Saturday for Moorea

Dear Redditors, I am planning to swim with the whales on Saturday. I see that the wave prediction for Moorea identifies winds over 20 knots and 10’ to 13’ waves for Saturday morning. This seems especially rough for open ocean swimming and I’m especially prone to seasickness and am wondering what I am likely to encounter if this prediction comes true. Am I correct to interpret this as a barrier to encounter the whales? Are swimmers allowed in the water with 3-4 meter waves? Will these waves impact the chances of encountering whales from the boat, even if the captain won’t allow swimming?

No wrong answers. I dove Darwin’s Arch a decade ago and spent a pulse quickening half hour in 4’ swells in the open ocean waiting for a pickup. I’d hate to get separated from the boat in 10’ footers. 🤢

Thanks to everyone in this sub for your advice.

Weather expectations?

Greetings all!

We will soon be in FP, spending time on Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, and Rangiroa. We are excited about the opportunity and can’t wait to be there.

WRT the weather, I’ve lived in the Philippines and have done some traveling in the pacific. I’ve grown to expect weather reports for the region to be hit-or-miss when addressing the specific weather for a specific location, and am comfortable with random showers throughout the day, bigger swells in the afternoon, etc. Given the predicted forecast, what should we expect wrt ‘feels like’ and actual temperatures, rainfall, named storms, etc between August 27 and September 10?

We’re starting to pack and want to travel as light as possible while still being prepared for what we will encounter.

Thank you!

De Quervain tenosynovitis. Now in both thumbs!! 👍🏼💥🔥🎊🎈🎈🎉🎊

Hi all, I hope you are well and that your flares and pain aren’t occurring today.

So I’ve been working through the process of getting the thumb, wrist, and finger symptoms I have diagnosed. Right now, the diagnosis is osteoarthritis in the thumbs. I will see a rheumatologist in late September, the earliest opening I can find. I’m experiencing site specific pain in the fleshy part of both thumbs that makes pinching anything excruciating, I hesitate in grabbing items like dinner plates or water glasses to avoid pain, and even scratching my dog is uncomfortable. Topical NSAID helps with the joint pain in my fingers (both hands but right hand experiences more discomfort).

The radiologist interpretation of x-rays is: Moderate to severe osteoarthrosis 1st carpometacarpal joint. 2. Probable old trauma radial styloid process.

Narrative
PROCEDURE: XR HAND LEFT MIN 3 VIEWS COMPARISON: None. INDICATION: Patient with symmetric polyarthralgia. No known trauma or injury. NUMBER OF VIEWS: 3 FINDINGS: BONES: No acute fracture, subluxation, or dislocation. OTHER: None.

However, my chief complaint is De Quervain tenosynovitis in my left hand. It’s been present for four months now. In the last ten days I’ve experienced it in my right thumb, too. While not as intense as the issue in my left hand, it’s pretty darn inconvenient and the combination of the issues I’m experiencing is conditioning me to avoid grabbing practically anything. Steering wheels provide significant apprehension, as does emptying the dishwasher, or buttoning jeans, or grabbing a credit card, or…

I’m curious to hear your experience with the onset of arthritis like mine, especially if the arthritis was a diagnosis of viral or bacterial infection, or psoriatic. How was it diagnosed? Was it blood test?

I’m also curious about those who experience De Quervain in both hands, and how it resolved (or if it’s ongoing). What is your treatment?

Thank you.

guitarras artesanas azahar, s.l. cipres 1999 value?

Greetings, I’ve got a cipres flamenco from 1999. It’s a nice sounding student guitar with good action. I’m not finding much about this era of guitar construction and am hoping that you might know details about it. Thanks in advance.

PSA: Greensky Bluegrass

Many of you might chastise me for being so uninformed, but after five or so years listening to bluegrass I have recently “heard” Greensky and man, they are awesome. That banjo tone juxtaposed to the dobro alongside the lyrical vocals and backed by such solid rhythm is really hitting home.

To the uninitiated, don’t make my mistake, give them a listen. To those of you in the know, go easy on me. I’m feeling the opportunity cost of missing out on them until recently. 😞

Guitar player has questions about thumb/wrist OA

Hi all,

Thanks in advance for your input. I’m having trouble with my hands and am in the process of negotiating the medical system, and am collecting info. I’d love to hear your thoughts and experience. This experience is causing a lot of interference in my daily life and I’m coming to terms with the reality that this is chronic, and requires significant changes to my lifestyle. I suspect that you all understand.

I’m a mid-fifties male with 30-years working on a computer keyboard and 40-years of guitar playing experiencing excruciating pain in fleshy part of thumb, along with constant pain in the tendon that runs from wrist to the second knuckle of the thumb. Originally I thought it was trauma from working in the yard, but after some months I consulted a hand surgeon. He did not order films, and diagnosed OA in the thumb.

I was started on celebrex but after four weeks returned to the doctor having found no relief. At that point I had a cortisone injection. This provided a month of minor relief after about two weeks.

In the past two weeks I’ve experienced the following:

\-symmetrical pain in hands especially the top of the fingers and base of the thumbs
\-joint stiffness in fingers upon waking or periods of inactivity. It sometimes feels most uncomfortable in the muscles between the 1st and 2nd joint, as well as the joints
\-joint stiffness gets better after long periods of use except at the base of the thumbs which becomes worse with use
\-hands, especially fingers swell daily. They also become very hot.
\-occasional stiffness in forearms

Other considerations:

\-have had a few bouts of gout in the toe joint, which has been controlled by meds for a couple years
\-the heat and swelling in the hands is less intense than during their onset
\-naproxen and otc meds provide no relief
\-this really doesn’t feel like carpal tunnel

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

NGD: 000-18. Oh-boy!

Got a great deal on a 000-18 standard. I’ve been hemming-and-hawing about getting one, and I’m currently kicking myself for not buying one sooner. It’s got the sweetest tone and very playable-the action is perfect. Nary a scratch on it! Anyone else over the moon about their 000-18?

0000 top and Monel strings

Hey pickers, realized yesterday that the Sitka top on my 0000 has changed since I got it. The guitar is from ‘21 although I have no idea when the top wood was cut nor how long Martin let the wood cure. Honestly, I’d love to know the details of the area and dates of the woods that comprise this guitar.

Regardless, the top on this guitar is definitely changing with time and play. This is happening much faster than I expected, and I’m really happy with the sound and direction that it seems to be heading.

I put Monel’s on it Sunday after reading a post here and love the way they sound on this guitar. They seem to have aged the guitars sound by two decades. I’d only used them on a D-28 reimagined once and I wasn’t that impressed in that configuration, but they make the 0000 sound great.

How are the tops on your guitars aging? Any opinions on Monel strings? Any insight on how I might learn more about the history of the woods in this instrument?

Happy picking!
