Pretty surreal to see a such a huge fanbase have a nuclear meltdown/identity crisis in real time. The panic-blame on the new HC has also started. Maybe we’re (Gophers) are just a solid team.

Why choose Catholicism over Islam? What makes it a richer, more intellectual and spiritual path?

I don’t want this to turn into a YouTube “debate bro” thread. I’d hope this specific forum is a bit more sophisticated than that.

As someone who has straddled the two religions for years, I’m quite curious.

I chose Islam (as an example in this post!) because it’s the other civilizational monotheistic faith that would even come close to rivaling the spiritual and intellectual traditions held by Catholic Civilization

Gopher fan here. What should we know about Miss State? Who are they? We play them next week in the Twin Cities.

Very rare and random Big Ten-SEC non conf. Should be fun.

What are your thoughts on cannabis, it being associated with sufism, and its role within Islamic societies, history, civilization?

Let me preface by saying I'm aware of the general rulings across Sunni schools of jurisprudence. This post is not being made to debate fiqh-y rulings on consuming intoxicants of any kind. I would hope this is the one Muslim forum on reddit where we can have an adult discussion on this.

The Muslims clearly utilized both hemp and cannabis, and incorporated ancient civilizations from Egypt, Persia, India that were well acquainted with the plant. Ibn Sina himself recommended it for sickness if I recall correctly.

Anyway, I'm sure it was also associated with this path as well. This isn't a "tell me weed is OK" post. I have used it in my life but now I only consume caffeine.

Curious to hear your feedback.

Switching back to Android after 9 years. Deciding between the Pixel 11 and VIII. Will the latter be worth it?

Android user, and diehard Nexus fan, until I switched to everything Apple in 2017. I love my MacBook Pro, it's my entire life, but I'm getting tired of staring at the same mobile OS for 9 years straight, and I also miss Android.

I'm deciding between the Pixel 11 and the Mark VIII. I like Samsung but the Sony and Pixel feel like cleaner Android which is what I desire. I only include the Pixel here because I’m nostalgic of the stock android on the old Nexus’s

Anyways, tell me why I should go with Mark VIII? I keep hearing its screen, software, etc seem 3-4 years out of date. But Sony is Sony, and that camera is amazing. I'll also have no issue with bandwidth as I live in Spain and can order the phone directly from Sony's Spanish store.

TIL that Huberman drinks 800mg of caffeine a day. Anyone else get up to that range daily? How's it going?

Me:

  • 180mg pre workout for morning gym session. Sometimes a 250er heavy duty one if I want to go full Hulk for leg day
  • 4ish coffees throughout the day
  • sleep 6-7 hours like a rock

As someone who is sober from all other drugs, I really don't care that my intake is so high. If this is my vice, so be it.

What do you think about the idea that the Ibadis are the "closest" thing we have to the earliest iterations of 7th century Islam?

I've seen this idea kicked around online before, mostly due to an assumption that they broke away so early and self-isolated for so long.

What are your thoughts on the late Shahab Ahmed's groundbreaking work "What is Islam?"

I've slowly worked my way through it over the years. I do think his sections on the "Persianate" world, or Balkans to Bengal complex, is quite interesting.
