How do you know which options strategy actually fits a trade?
I understand the basic call-and-put definitions, but I kept getting stuck at the next step: looking at an actual market idea and not knowing whether a covered call, cash-secured put, spread, or something else made sense.
I read a Kindle book on option trading recently because I wanted one place that started with the basics and then explained common strategies and where they are normally applied. That was more useful to me than reading isolated explanations of each strategy. I could follow the connection between the option itself, the strategy, and the situation it might fit.
I’m still not comfortable placing a trade just because a setup looks attractive. I’m trying to get better at understanding the risks and the reason for choosing one strategy over another before thinking about potential profit.
For anyone who learned options from scratch, what helped you make that jump from knowing the terminology to choosing a strategy responsibly? Did you use a book, paper trading, or mostly learn by trading options?
