Is there something that makes you recognise a favourite author’s writing?

I’m not even a chapter into a new fic and I hadn’t looked at the author name when I’d clicked into it, but I struck the phrase “camber of his ribs” and immediately thought, ‘is this BeautifulFiction’s work?’.

The answer was yes and I’m quite surprised I picked this up. They seem to be the only author that I’ve found that uses this and a few other phrases, but something about their writing is incredibly recognisable. Inject everything they write into my veins, please (Hiraeth especially, it’s my comfort fic).

Is there something that makes an author’s writing distinguishable to you?

Is a 6 inch asymmetrical ereader with buttons something you'd like?

Would anyone be interested in a 6" ereader with the asymmetrical button design?

My 10th gen Oasis was my favourite ereader and despite trying quite a few others trying to find a reasonable replacement, it's not happened. They all seem to be fine, but nothing has truly felt like a replacement.

My favourite has been the Kobo Clara BW (I would have gone for a Libra if they made a Carta 1300 model). I miss the buttons though and the ease of one handed reading, although the Clara has been the best of the devices I've tried for that, due to how small it is.

However, I love the screen size! It's such a nice size, it fits in my smallest bags and is very comfortable to read on. Which got me thinking, it was only the 10th gen Oasis that had a 7" screen, the previous two models had a 6" screen.

I realise that 6" screens seem to have a smaller market in general, but I love the idea of a 6" BW Libra. I feel like that would be the perfect device for me.

Thoughts?

How to get AO3 epubs onto Clara BW without a PC?

Hi all, debtating picking up a Kobo Clara BW for the smaller footprint and I’m confused about how to get epubs onto the device, specifically without the use of a computer. I upload files to my devices pretty constantly, often while out and don’t always have access to my computer when doing so.

I’ve enjoyed the email to kindle on Kindle devices and the use of Dropbox on Pocketbook, but I’m aware Dropbox only works with the Libra from Kobo. Is there a way to wirelessly send epubs to the Clara?

And is there a way to change them into Kobos format without the use of calibre?

If you have multiple ereaders, what combo do you have and why?

I'm in both the Kindle and Pocketbooks ecosystem at the moment. Kindle because it was my first venture into eink, I enjoy KU and Pocketbook because I wanted to try the open ecosystem (I don't buy my ebooks from Amazon anyway) and a coloured eink display when my kindle battery was dying. I love the idea of Kobo, but I've realised I don't actually need colour and I'd want a BW Libra. The smaller size of the Clara BW is cute, but I enjoy having buttons if the option is there.

I've got a Kindle Oasis and Pocketbook Inkpad Colour 3. Previously had a Kindle basic I gifted to a family member.

Paperwhite or Basic for previous Oasis user?

I was gifted an Oasis in 2020 and until last year it was practically glued to me. The battery started failing and I looked into alternatives. I still wanted buttons and Amazon didn't offer them anymore and I was curious about other brands, but was completely against an android ereader. I liked the open ecosystem for Pocketbook and ended up with a Pocketbook Inkpad Colour 3, which I regret purchasing and am hoping to sell.

However, I'm now stuck trying to figure out my next ereader. I would like to get a Kobo Libra at some point, as I do miss the Oasis form factor, but I honestly didn't love having colour. It's pretty, but the dim screen, lack of contrast for BW content and the battery drain has led me to rule it out until there's a BW model.

So I'm looking at a new kindle. I had a basic a few years ago, which I liked a lot, but didn't feel I needed two kindles, so I gifted it to a family member. I've never owned a paperwhite. Some of my friends have one and it's really nice, however I did like the recessed screen of the basic. Although my Oasis had a flush screen, so I could probably get used to it again rather easily. I know the paperwhite is a bit bigger, which I did like the 7 inch screen on my Oasis, but I also enjoyed reading on the basic.

I'm having a hard time deciding. As I said, I'd like to eventually get a Kobo (mostly for the form factor and library access) and I feel like the smaller form factor of the basic would work well as a secondary device so I can continue to access KU, but the paperwhite seems like such a premium device and there's no guarantee that a BW Kobo Libra gets released, so whatever I buy may remain a primary device.

If you own both, how do they compare? Or just any recommendations on which to go for. I've been thinking about this for weeks and I'm hoping to buy during the next prime day and I haven't gotten much closer to a decision. I'm still trying to talk myself out of just settling for the KLC, flaws and all. I think making such an expensive mistake on my last purchase has made me very wary about making a decision this time around.

Kobo Libra Colour or Clara Colour when one hasn't updated to new pricing

I made a post a while ago about regretting buying the Pocketbook Inkpad Colour 3 to replace my Kindle Oasis.

I'm currently looking at what I should replace the Pocketbook with and I've landed with Kobo. Obviously Kobo devices had a price hike lately and I was hoping the Libra Colour might go on sale for prime day. However, I can get the Clara Colour for the original price, as it hasn't seemed to update yet. That puts the devices at a £90 price difference.

I know I like the form factor of the Libra, as I tried out my friends and it's very similar to the Oasis. I've had a Kindle Basic previously that I gifted to a family member because I didn't need two devices with my Oasis, but I did like the form factor. It fit in almost any bag and even some of my jacket pockets, although my Oasis also fit in pretty much any bag.

The price for the Clara Colour is really good right now, while I can get it at the original price and I'm aware the Libra might not go on sale for prime day, but I'm worried that the screen will be too small, considering I'm going from a 7.8inch screen and before that a 7inch screen. I'm quite nervous about buying a new device, considering my last experience. I do realise I can return it if it's not for me, so that is a plus.

For people that have used both, which do you prefer and why? Which would you go for in my situation?

Amazon UK 6 Credit Limit

I had 6 credits, my subscription renewed this morning and I still have 6 credits. Apparently in the UK there is a limit of 6 now. So I have now paid for a credit that I don't actually get.

Is there anyway I can fix this? Use one of my credits and have it replaced? This is so silly. I had 24 at one point.

Savannah Cardi (Tunisian Crochet) - Cannot meet gauge for rows but can get it for stitches

I'm making the Savannah Cardi from TLYC and I can't figure out how to meet gauge.

Her gauge is 16 stitches by 11 rows.

I'm hitting 15-16 stitches but I'm getting 14 rows. Usually I would adjust my hook size but if I go up, I'll ruin my gauge for my stitches. I'm not really sure what to do in this situation. I tried pulling my stitches up higher, but I thought I already was pulling them up high.

The row height will account for the length of the cardigan and sleeves and I'm petite and was planning on making it shorter anyway, so I'm not sure if I should just go with my current gauge and measure as I go and if I need it longer, just add more rows?

Not 100% sure that was the right tag to use, so I hope it was.

Pocketbook Inkpad Color 3

I'm selling a less than 6 months old Pocketbook Inkpad Color 3. Lightly used, in the same condition that I got it in.

I'm located within the UK, but I'm willing to ship outside the UK as long as the buyer pays shipping.

Here's a link to the eBay listing if anyone is interested:

Buyers remorse for Pocketbook

I spent a year deciding on a new ereader to replace my Kindle Oasis and I have pretty bad buyers remorse. I'm well outside the return window and trying to just make it work. I researched every brand, wanted to move away from Amazon, thought I'd like a Kobo but none of their form factors appealed to me, I didn't want android, so that ruled out Boox. I liked the idea of a European brand and landed on Pocketbook.

I bought a Pocketbook Inkpad Colour 3 and got it at the beginning of January, so I've had it for 5 1/2 months. It's a very nice device, I love the colour, the screen is good, I love the interface and the freedom of the ecosystem. Being able to upload to Dropbox has been brilliant. I'm still figuring out syncing with Calibre without plugging in.

I've realised that 7 inches was perfect for me and I think 7.8, while really nice is just bigger than I need. The build quality is nice, but it's quite heavy and even worse with an added case, at least in comparison to my Oasis, which was very lightweight, even with a case. I find it awkward to read while in bed, which is where I do a lot of my reading.

I really don't like the sluggishness of the UI, it's really beginning to drive me up the wall. I don't notice it as much while reading, but it bothers me a lot more than I thought it would. Organisation hasn't been the best, it's too slow and frustrating to do on the device, so my books are very much in random disarray. I miss statistics as well. I don't track my books using an app, but I liked getting some info on kindle, which is something I'm aware is built into Kobo. I feel like for a device that cost me £300, I've paid a premium for a device that is well behind its counterparts in processing power.

Overall, this isn't to say the pocketbook is in any way a bad device, there's definitely things I do like about it, but it's not for me and unfortunately there's not enough of a market where I am that I feel I could recuperate a reasonable amount through selling it on.
