[Education] Trying to get my head around the basics (late in life) - brought on by a simple discussion about solstices. Explain like I’m 5 year old not 65

I was talking with a group of friends about the winter solstice and someone commented that the days will thankfully start getting longer.
One of us then added “and they’ll start getting warmer”
To which a third said, yes, “but we will still get very cold days along the way”.

This has had me thinking ever since. My schooling only covered how to work out some pretty basic averages.

I expect that the days getting longer is an exact amount every day, with no ups and downs along the way. A straight line from shortest day to longest day.

However;’the days getting warmer’ definitely isn’t. It will have some major highs and lows, but there will still generally be an upward trend.
* Is there a name for that trend?.
* Is there a specific term or description for how much over that line or how much under that line a specific day is?
* can an average be adjusted for particularly large abnormal swings - perhaps changing the example might be better here - for example “average income” where there are some insanely wealthy people and some insanely poor people, so an average income can look nothing like what the true average person earns - is there such a thing as an “average average” - one that accounts for those big figures skewing the results?

I have no idea why I’ve suddenly decided to start learning about this all because of some chat about the weather, but hopefully it’s never too late to learn something new. Just go easy on this “old dog” learning his “new tricks”
Like how to add flair when there’s no option for flair like I normally get.

Cracked the 500 days!!

Not sure I’ll keep jumping on to Reddit every morning just to keep ticking over to the next streak achievement - I might start only opening it when there’s something interesting happening or I have something to contribute to one of the groups, but it was good getting to well over 12 months.

Has Cadbury changed their Dairy Milk chocolate lately?

The last two blocks of Cadbury Dairy Milk plain chocolate that we’ve bought, have actually been pretty horrible. Literally a noticeable unpleasant taste through it.

One from a service station in Sydney and one from a Supermarket in Canberra, so it’s unlikely to be anything that someone has done to them, but both had an unpleasant taste through them.

My wife says it’s still the same, but I liked their plain chocolate, and now I actually dislike it, so it seems like something has changed.

Does anyone feel like the recipe has changed lately?

Odd clouds on the crossing from Gozo to Malta

Would be interested to know what’s happening with these clouds - they look like an air current is going down and under them and taking some of the cloud with it, but I could be wildly wrong on that. Happy to be enlightened as to what they actually are. Thanks in advance.

Legality of Booby-trapped bait parcels

Location: Australia/USA.
There seem to be a lot of videos around of people leaving bait parcels on their porch, that have been boobytrapped in some way to react if stolen.
While many of these are likely AI crap, the more realistic looking ones with the whole “how to” included in the video, primarily seem to be from the US.

I’m pretty confident that they’d be illegal in Australia - even if purely mechanical and had no explosive charge that detonated to eject the contents - but I’d be interested to know whether that’s actually the case. Would these be illegal in Aus? I add that I have absolutely no intention of ever creating a parcel - it’s simply the legalities that interest me as I find law fascinating.

In the USA if someone took a bait parcel and it dispersed glitter/powder etc, and the thief inhaled it, or got it in their eyes, or were otherwise impaired in some way, wouldn’t they still be able to sue? - even if it meant admitting they were committing a crime?
Wouldn’t it be illegal even there to put something on your property that is specifically designed in a way that could realistically injure someone?

Looking for a punny nickname

I hope this isn’t too big a diversion from laughing at puns to asking for help creating a pun. If so, admin can feel free to delete it.
We are looking for a punny name for ourselves whilst travelling, that combines names or interests - something like the surfer that loved geocaching and had “caching waves” or the French & Australian couple that called themselves “The Frozzies” (not really punny though)

We will be caravanning around Australia,
we will be scuba diving and geocaching and cycling,
our van is a Tanami hybrid pop-top,
Our names are Trent & Kathy,

We gave AI the challenge and it hasn’t come up with a lot. I’m sure humans can do better - any suggestions?

A guy went to a costume party with a girl on his back.

His mates give him a hard time about not coming in a costume.
He tells them, “I am in costume - I’m dressed as a turtle”
They query this, and say, “So what’s with the girl on your back?”
He says, “Oh, that’s Michelle”

Hotel in Bergen has made the bed with two single doonas - is this a Norwegian or Bergener thing?

G’Day all, absolutely blown away by the few days we’ve been in your country - OMG the incredibly beauty leaves me breathless - Did the Nærøyfjord Cruise and Flåm Railway yesterday - the number of waterfalls was incredible!!

Anyway, I digress, we got to our hotel and the Queen - maybe King? size bed had been set up with two smaller doonas so that each person has their own.
Is this a Norwegian thing, a Bergener thing, or is this hotel just really weird? I’ve never encountered this anywhere else.

It kind of works - in that I can’t steal all the doona from my wife - but it also kind of doesn’t work in many other ways.
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on the mystery.

Finally a pun that made my wife smile.

We were on a bushwalk today and for several dozen meters I farted audibly - perfectly in synch with each step.

I commented, “Fart, Step, Fart, Step, Fart, Step ….. “ Then paused and said, “I guess that makes me a ‘step-farter’”
(I am actually a ‘step-father’ to her adult kids, so it seemed extra appropriate)

She actually gave an amused smile, where she normally groans or refuses to respond. Finally - a win!! Yes 🤜🏻🤛🏻🥳
