Initial Review: ASICS Gel-Kayano 33 (First Run Impressions)
I’ve been a loyal Kayano wearer for years after switching from the Brooks Adrenaline GTS when Brooks started watering down their stability features. The older Kayanos (especially my 31s) gave me that solid, planted, confidence-inspiring feel I need as an overpronator. Unfortunately, the new Kayano 33 is a big departure — and not in a good way for someone like me who relies on traditional stability.
Right away on my first few miles, the shoe feels noticeably bouncier thanks to the new FLUIDSUPPORT setup and the dual-layer midsole with more FF Blast Max cushioning on top. There’s definitely better energy return and a smoother forward roll, which some runners will probably love for longer efforts. But that classic locked-in, secure “planted” sensation from the previous models is mostly gone. It feels less stable and more floaty underfoot compared to the 31s and 32s.
The upper is another change I’m not crazy about. The new engineered mesh looks and feels more synthetic and plasticky — almost Hoka-like — and doesn’t seem as breathable as the previous generations. Fit is okay, but the overall vibe is much more modern maximalist than the supportive workhorse I expected.
I’m returning these tomorrow and picking up another pair of the 32s, which felt way closer to my trusted 31s during a quick try-on. If you buy Kayanos specifically for that dependable stability and planted ride, you might want to stick with the previous version while supplies last.
Will update after more miles in the 32s, but first impressions have me disappointed with the direction Asics took here.
