🎬 TieDyeSam Website Updates

Reworked the /community page this week. It now tracks the top 10 posters and top 10 commenters by score over the last 30 days, so it's easier to see who's been most active recently instead of just staring at all-time totals.

Each name links through to their full profile page too, every post they've made and their stats broken down.

I'm still figuring out what's useful here vs. what's just numbers. If there's something you'd want to see covered (a technique that's been everywhere lately, a creator worth spotlighting, a question the sub keeps circling), drop it below, please. DMs are open too if you'd rather not post publicly. "How can I help?" is my favorite question to ask.

Week of Jun 27-Jul 3, 2026 Seller Spotlight 🛍️

💬 Shop Talk: Building Something for Sellers

I'm preparing to soft-launch a selling platform built specifically for the tie-dye community. If you sell online, or want to, I'd like to hear from you.

Sellers list finished work, host auctions, take custom work requests and participate in a bidding marketplace.

"Drop links" for every product provide a cross-platform way to send buyers to a one-page checkout.

Payment is handled entirely by Stripe, sellers are paid directly.

Why Did I Build This?

I'm a software developer who LOVES tie dye and the tie dye community. I see an opportunity to serve and support the community by helping you sell your artwork.

I found that none of the current platforms adequately support custom order support, auctions or marketplace bidding. Plus the fees are higher than they should be, just for listing and taking a payment. I can provide a better service at a lower rate, so why not?

How Much Does It Cost?

Listings are free, sales fees are 3% of orders, $5 max per order.

Let's Build Together

Please reach out by DM or connect with me through my website if you are interested in participating. I am at your service! 🌈 ✨ 🙇

Rolled Accordion Ice Dye

Process:

  1. Pre-soaked shirt in soda ash fixer solution
  2. Folded with pleated accordion style
  3. Rolled flat fabric up like a cinnamon roll, set in plastic container
  4. Sprayed lightly with soda ash fixer solution
  5. Topped with powdered dye applied in wedge shapes
  6. Topped with ice from a plastic cup mold
  7. Sprinkled fixer on top of ice
  8. Waited for ice to melt, retaining melt water
  9. Sprayed dye clumps with fixer
  10. Bagged, Batched

Colors: Fire Red, Bright Yellow

What's everyone doing for the holiday weekend and why is it tie-dye?

Literally touching grass, dyeing fabric

DUI deity roll with an active ice slab on top. Loved the first try, but the design was off-center. I measured and marked it this time. Time lapse in comments

Process:

  1. Marked the center of the shirt, fold
  2. Drew semi-circles on both sides with compass and washable marker
  3. Rolled it up like Temaki
  4. Laid it in a tray, sprayed lightly with soda ash solution
  5. Dusted with turquoise, then cross-stripes of other colors (see list below)
  6. Laid active ice slab on top, wait until it melts
  7. Sprayed clumps of dye residue on top lightly with soda ash solution
  8. Bagged it, now I wait at least 24 hours

Colors: Turquoise, Fire Red, Cobalt Blue, Ultra-Violet

Rainbow Spiral Active Ice Dye

This is probably my favorite spiral so far.

Step 7 below is something I haven't tried before, but will repeat. The ice dyeing process tends to leave residue powder. Rather than wash it out in the rinse, I misted with soda ash water to just enough to dissolve the powder. I dig the effect that had on the design and dye migration.

Process:

  1. Soda soak 20 minutes
  2. Spun to barely damp in washer
  3. Spiral tied
  4. Powdered dye in classic wedge shapes, avoiding the center
  5. Top with a puck of active ice - frozen soda ash water - around 9pm
  6. Let sit overnight outside (55F - 60F)
  7. In the morning, I misted the top with soda ash water JUST ENOUGH to dissolve remaining dye powder
  8. Bagged and batched for 24-36 hours (don't actually remember tbh)

Colors: Fire Red, Bright Yellow, New Emerald Green, Cobalt Blue, Ultra-Violet

Feedback and suggestions for improvements are appreciated 🌈✨🙇

Week of June 20-26, 2026 Community Recap 🌈

157 posts from 111 dyers.

✨ Dyer Spotlight

Two posts in the top 10 this week from u/TastyTrades - both in the same earthy palette. The geode topped the week at 950 points, and the mandala came in 10th. Most of the high-score work this week was bright and saturated. These terracotta and forest green were a fun and fresh palette. I've tried geode and ended up with something that looks more like abstract blobs. I have no idea how those mineral lines stay so clean. 🤩

They've been posting regularly through May and June: tapestries, rocks, ice dye, mandalas. Consistently this palette, consistently this quality.

First Try at the "Deity Roll"

Hey Now! ✌️

Here's my first try at the "Deity Roll" - all tips and feedback are welcome and appreciated.

Process:

  1. Rolled up dry, attempting to keep the center point
  2. Set in found container, propped up with a paver
  3. Sprayed with soda ash solution until just barely damp
  4. Applied powdered (20 year-old) fiber-reactive dye to damp fabric
  5. Topped with a slab of active ice -- frozen soda ash solution
  6. Bagged and left to sit in the muck for two days in my Northern California back yard

Colors: Turquoise dusted all over and stripes of: Fire Red, Cobalt, Ultra-Violet

One thing I noticed... the design isn't centered on the shirt. I did sleeve-in-sleeve but somehow it's off-center. I'll likely keep this one for kayaking and doing the lawn and be more careful with my center-line next time. 🤷 😆

I am deeply grateful to everyone who posts here, you inspire me and brighten my day - thank you! 🌈 ✨ 🙇

Flag Fold Ice Dye

This was an experiment:

  1. Flag folded
  2. soaked in soda ash
  3. let dry for two days in the California sun
  4. Powdered dye under ice cubes
  5. Dipped the bottom two edges in the muck after the ice melted (I suspect the light blue separator lines are from this)
  6. Then back on the tube for batching

Colors: Ultra Violet, Light Red, Cobalt Blue

I like the geometric shapes but the uneven dye saturation isn't ideal.

Feedback appreciated - tips, corrections, glow-ups - all are welcome 😆

🌈✨🙇

Latest Mandala Attempt - feedback please

Still trying to get the honeycomb shapes.

Here's my method, please help me improve:

  1. I tied it dry
  2. Soaked in soda ash
  3. Let dry
  4. Applied dye
  5. Batched for 2 days

I can't seem to get the honeycomb shape or the white resist lines. I'm using waxed nylon cord, maybe I need to shell out for sinew? Tie it wet? Dye it damp?

Cookie Cutter Batik Jar Dye Experiment

The experiment:

  1. Cookie cutters (3 sizes of heart) batik onto a dry shirt.
  2. Soda Soak,
  3. Rolled up and stuffed into a jar with "Red Wine" dye.

I like the batik effect, would NOT repeat the jar dye method.

How would you use this technique?

Spiral w/Activated Ice Puck

Colors: Rosebud, Cobalt Blue

Pattern: Spiral

Method: DUI with a block of activated ice (frozen soda ash solution)

The Rosebud didn't strike much - it's likely 20 years old. I was expecting quite a bit more purple as the colors combined, but it barely struck at all.

u/Tie-Dye-Sam — 4 days ago

Rainbow Accordion Switchback

Diagonal accordion fold, then switchback folded (see photo).

Colors: Fire Red, Deep Orange, Bright Yellow, New Emerald Green, Cobalt Blue, Ultra-Violet

I accidentally took it off the rack for batching, putting the wet block of fabric directly into the bag. 🤷

Seeing the muck underneath oozing against the plastic bag, I immediately realized my mistake. I removed it from the bag, put it on a clean rack and put the bag over it for batching. I believe that thin tan line is the result of this moment-in-muck.

I think next time, I'll deliberately put a dark color on the bottom like black, I like the way those lines cut across the design.

Our Tie-Dye Birthday Party (2009) 🌈 ✨

✨ Happy Father's Day! ✨

Many years ago, my brilliant and creative wife planned a tie-dye birthday party for our twins. Twins, triplets, etc. celebrating the same birthday presents unique challenges.

Our twins were team captains, they chose their team colors. For this party, we had guests close their eyes and pull a piece of construction paper from a bag to decide which team they would join for the day.

I accordion-folded the shirts and bucket dyed them in the selected team colors. We also bucket-dyed bandanas and cotton cinch-sacks in matching solid colors.

We created an obstacle course in the park behind our house and planned fun activities like guessing jelly bean flavors. We kept score, but only for fun.

Party guests wore the shirts and bandanas throughout the day and took them home as party favors. This was my wife’s genius idea - it was a hit with the parents and cool to see their friends wearing the shirts for months after at school and at play-dates.

I'm happy to answer questions, go ahead and ask in the comments or DM.

One last note to parents of young multiples - IT GETS EASIER. 💗

Photos: Team captains, tying and dyeing in buckets, team party packs (shirt, bandana, cinch-sack), party photos, cake time (that’s me carrying the cake)

Something else stood out this week. People here can't help but be helpful - it's wonderful! The posts with the most comments weren't the top-scoring ones. Where do you get your white clothing items? drew 32 comments at 12 points. Anyone use only one color? drew 23 at 5 points. Soda ash after dyeing? drew 11 at 1 point.

A few highlights this week that I especially loved seeing:

u/Pleasant-Age-2465 posted for the first time: running a craft program for neurodivergent people, tie-dye is part of it. 96 pts from a cold start 🤩.

u/coolguy_14's very first post was a question about ice dye: First time using ice. Did I not use enough ice or dye?. 59 pts, 36 comments, the second-highest comment thread of the week. First post.

u/nvrmindjustvisiting first showed up here in July 2023, has 3 posts total in the sub's history, and quietly dropped Latest washout this week (35 pts). Classic quiet returner.

One post this week worth calling out by name: u/MoephishH2O opened with "First shirts I've made in 5 years! Glad to be back!!" That kind of return is exactly what I find fascinating about this community. Five years is a long time. Welcome back 👍🏻.

🎬 Site Update: Videos Page

Just did a big refresh of tiedyesam.com/videos. A whole new batch of curated tie-dye videos is up. The catalog pulls from ~460 channels focused on tie-dye, ice dye, shibori, batik, and natural dyeing. Worth a scroll if you're looking for technique inspiration or just want to fall down a rabbit hole 🌈.

If there's a Shop Talk topic you'd want to see, or something sellers in this sub don't talk about enough, drop it below, please. I'm building the list. DMs are open too if you'd rather not post publicly. "How can I help?" is my favorite question to ask.

💬 Shop Talk: What Do You Actually Want From Your Selling Platform?

Some sellers choose Etsy while others choose Shopify. I wonder why, so I'm asking y'all experts directly. Is it fees, tools, shipping, direct customer contact, custom storefront? Curious what you value most in your storefront, especially anyone who's tried more than one. If you would take a moment to drop your answer in the comments, I would appreciate it.

💬 Shop Talk: Pricing Your Work

Most pricing conversations stop at "materials plus a bit extra." The full stack has four layers: materials (blank + dye + consumables), labor (your time, floor rate $30/hr for active production time), overhead (utilities, equipment depreciation, packaging, platform fees), and margin (1.5-2x fully-loaded cost).

A basic tee runs about $23.93 fully loaded: $5.50 blank, OWG-calculated dye around $2.88 for three colors, 25 minutes of labor, overhead. At 1.75x, that's a $42 shirt. Run the same formula on a mid-weight hoodie (heavier blank, more dye, more time) and you're looking at around $85.

The Good News: Blanks, dye, soda ash, your clothes washer's depreciation, Etsy transaction fees, and booth fees all go on Schedule C if you're filing as a business. In the 22% bracket, a $16 hoodie has an effective cost of $12.48 after deduction. That changes what quality blanks are worth buying: you can afford a better garment than the face price suggests, because part of it comes back at tax time.
