💬 Shop Talk: Own Your Customer List and Content

Big platforms can close your account with no warning, and when that happens you lose every customer who only knew you through it. An email list is the one contact channel you actually own: nobody can take it from you.

Keep evergreen content (photos, process, your story) on your own website too, and post it out to socials from there instead of the other way around, so a platform ban costs you reach, not your whole customer relationship.

Use a "shop" subdomain for selling your artwork to improve your domain's search ranking.

Diana (u/dianaSDD, Sunshine Daydream Designs) has been posting in this community since December 2022. Almost three years, over a thousand posts. She started with reverse ice-dyed geodes and stayed with the technique long enough to make it a signature before branching into full denim jackets, sherpa-lined jackets, and overalls that ran through the sub in 2023 and 2024.

What she's making now, size-inclusive palazzo pants, dresses, skirts, a piece built in collaboration with a local seamstress, reads less like a new direction than the same instinct she started with: figure out who a piece is for, and make sure it exists for them.

The photos have caught up to the work, too. The staging on her recent photos is some of the best I've seen here - small touches like pull-outs and complimentary jewelry add a classy touch. She's a shining example of how to run a tie dye business online.

💬 Who Is Tie Dye Sam?

Please allow me to introduce myself, my name is Sam Corl. I'm a software developer, Deadhead and tie dye enthusiast.

Many years ago, I was fortunate to be a part of the Grateful Dead Tour experience, seeing dozens of shows between 1991 and 1995. I have so many fond memories of dancing, singing, hugging, tripping and traveling with my brothers and sisters. Many friends found ways to support themselves on tour by creating art on the off days and selling it on the Lot. The band and the kind people in my community showed me the light of pure love, I am forever Grateful.

Tie dye continued as an influence in my life when I went to work for Dharma Trading Company in May of 1996. I originally worked at the tiny warehouse at 1209 Third St. in San Rafael, CA. I took orders on the phone, picked, packed and shipped. Each year on the anniversary of my hire date, I would take a phone order and process it entirely myself - picking, packing, shipping - as a celebration of my role in the process - grateful to be a supporter of fiber artists.

Over time, I ended up custom-building all of Dharma's website and warehouse software, working directly with the founder and original owner, Isaac Goff. We met every Tuesday morning for twenty years. As Dharma grew, I planned and supervised moves to larger warehouse spaces in 1998 (San Rafael, CA) and in 2002 (Petaluma, CA).

Working behind the scenes in support of tie dye artists deepened my connection with the fiber artist community. I was inspired by the creativity and beautifully diverse styles, techniques and color palettes. I quickly realized that most of these artists had no way to share their work online - it was May of 1999 - websites were difficult to make back then, social media hadn't happened yet. I was inspired to create a gallery to feature their work and tell their story. Many of the original artists sent photos in the mail - I scanned and posted the photos, typed in their story. I remember feeling inspired by every story and honored to be included in the community. The "Featured Artists" gallery on the Dharma website has grown to over one thousand artists, enjoyed world-wide by people who love fiber arts for nearly 30 years.

Personally, I've worn tie dye on a regular basis for as long as I can remember. My wife and I hosted a tie dye themed birthday party for our twins' 8th birthday. They're wearing tie dye shirts in their birth announcement photos. We've tie dyed with friends and family countless times.

In February of 2026, I started work on a personal passion project to help dyers sell their artwork directly - TieDye.direct. This project is a way for me to support and protect this community that I love so much. I hope you'll consider joining the gallery and showing your work. Everyone is welcome. 🌈 ✨ 🙇

The video library picked up about 90 new tutorials and process videos this week, pulled in as artists post them. A few worth watching: Adam Unterreiner's ripple-style ice dye process, Brother Brent's Dyes walking through why soda ash is "the brakes" on a dye job, and Practical and Pretty Tie Dye's live beginner spiral tutorial.

It's filterable by pattern and technique, and you can sort by "most recent" to catch what just got added instead of digging through 17,000 videos. If you've got a YouTube channel with tie-dye content that isn't showing up, drop the link below and I'll take a look.

u/DRYERWOLF hadn't posted in r/tiedye for 249 days, then came back with a PVC-pipe-and-sinew technique I'm tempted to try: mirrored the shirt, wrapped it tight around the pipe, then cross-crossed sinew around it instead of the usual rubber bands. 212 points on a comeback post 🤩

They also tucked in a couple bandanas done with a 12mm acrylic rod, and asked people to try the technique and report back. Has anyone tried it yet? I'd love to see a second attempt.

Rainbow Spiral for a friend

A friend requested a rainbow spiral with red at the edges. It took two tries, but I'm happy with this one (first photo).

On the previous attempt (second photo), I wasn't careful about color placement. The orange ran into the green, yielding brown.

Colors:

  • Fire Red
  • Deep Orange
  • Bright Yellow
  • New Emerald Green
  • Cobalt Blue
  • Ultra-violet

Method:

  1. Soaked in soda ash overnight
  2. Spun dry, spiral tied (I used a wood dowel again)
  3. Dye powder applied in wedges
  4. Puck of frozen soda ash fixer on top
  5. Cured for for a day in the California sun

Where do you promote or sell outside of Reddit? Instagram, TikTok, Facebook groups, your email list? Seems like Instagram has the biggest audience, but it's a mix of influencers and cottage industry entrepreneurs.

Also learned this one the hard way: if you're recording video on an iPhone, turn HDR off before you hit record. HDR footage uploads to Instagram overexposed and washed out, the colors don't survive the conversion. Look in Settings ➜ Camera ➜ Record Video ➜ HDR Video, switch it off before you film.

I built a website specifically for buying and selling tie dye: tiedye.direct. No credit card is required, no cost, no risk. Setup takes about five minutes and you're ready to list and sell your dyed work.

Included free: a customizable seller page with 12 color themes to choose from, project estimation and management, custom order entry, your own branded "shop" URL. Every listing includes a "buy" page for social media and direct sales.

Stripe takes credit cards from your customers, you get paid directly. Platform revenue share (the ONLY fee) is 3%, capped at $5 max per order. A special rate of 1% for the rest of the year is offered to all sellers who sign up and list in July or August.
