What type of paint is used on lens edges to hide "power rings"
Hey everyone,
I have a relatively high minus prescription and will get a pair of 1.67 high-index lenses with a mild 30% tint. Like most high-minus lenses, the unpolished/polished edges create noticeable power rings and internal reflections.
I’ve seen a few viral Instagram videos from optical shops in India showing lab techs applying something around the cut edge/bevel of high-minus lenses. It completely blocks the raw white ring / reflections and makes the lens blend seamlessly into dark metal or acetate frames.
I’m trying to figure out what exact product or chemical technique is being used in those videos:
What type of paint, dye, or marker are they using? Is it a specific optical edge-coating lacquer, a water-based acrylic paint pen, or an alcohol-based industrial dye marker?
Safety with coatings: High-index materials (like 1.67 MR-10) and Anti-Reflective coatings can crack or craze if exposed to harsh solvents like acetone. What safe pigment/solvent combo are these techs using that adheres to the polished edge without stripping the AR coating?
Removal: If it ever needs to be removed, what solvent do labs use to clean off edge ink safely without damaging the 1.67 resin?
If any opticians, lab techs, or people familiar with overseas optical techniques know what these pens/paints are called or what ingredients to look for, I’d really appreciate the insight! Thanks!
