Need ASO Advice: My App Isn't Showing Up in Search by Name

Hi everyone,

I'm an independent Android developer and recently published an open-source Android TV remote app on Google Play.

Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hari.androidtvremote

GitHub:
https://github.com/harimoradiya/TV-Remote-for-Android-TV

One issue I'm facing is that my app is difficult to find in Google Play Search. Even when I search for the app name, it doesn't consistently appear in the results.

I'm looking for advice from developers who have experience with Google Play ASO.

Some questions I have:

  • How long does it usually take for a new app to become searchable?
  • What are the most important ranking factors for Google Play Search in 2026?
  • Is it better to use a keyword-rich app title or focus on building a unique brand name?
  • How much do installs, ratings, reviews, retention, and updates affect search rankings?
  • Are there any common ASO mistakes that prevent apps from appearing in search results?
  • Is there anything in my Play Store listing that could be improved?
  • What would you recommend for an open-source app that is completely free, ad-free, and has no subscriptions?

My goal isn't just to get more downloads—I genuinely want users searching for an Android TV remote to discover a free, open-source alternative without ads or premium paywalls.

If any ASO experts or experienced Android developers could review my Play Store listing and suggest improvements, I'd be extremely grateful. Any feedback on the app listing, title, short description, long description, screenshots, icon, or overall ASO strategy would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your time and advice!

Looking for feedback on my open-source Android TV Remote app

Hi everyone,

I recently published my Android TV Remote app on Google Play and made the entire project open source.

The app includes:

  • Android TV auto-discovery
  • D-pad & touchpad controls
  • Keyboard input
  • Volume & power controls (where supported)
  • Casting support
  • Material You theming

I'm not here to promote it—I genuinely want feedback from other Android developers and Play Console publishers.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on:

  • The Play Store listing (screenshots, description, icon, etc.)
  • UI/UX improvements
  • Features you'd expect in a TV remote app
  • Performance or compatibility issues on different Android TV devices
  • Anything else you think could be improved

Your honest feedback—positive or negative—would really help me make the app better.

I spent the last few months building an open-source Android TV remote because I couldn't find one I actually liked

For the past few months I've been working on a side project after getting frustrated with the Android TV remote apps that were available.

I wanted something that would simply connect to my TV and work, while also being a good project to learn from and maintain over time.

Some of the things I focused on were:

  • Automatic discovery of Android TVs on the local network
  • D-pad navigation and gesture touchpad controls
  • Phone keyboard input directly on the TV
  • Volume, power and navigation controls
  • Casting support
  • Material You dynamic theming
  • Customizable app shortcuts

TV Remote for Android TV is:

  • ✅ Completely free
  • ✅ Open source
  • ✅ No ads
  • ✅ No subscriptions

The project is fully open source, so anyone can look through the implementation, report issues, or contribute if they're interested.

I'm still actively improving it, so if anyone has ideas for features, better TV compatibility, or architecture suggestions, I'd genuinely love to hear them.
