hey guys i’m 22 and have been trying to get into meditation. for context ive been out of school for a year now and going into a second year. ive been failing to get into grad school and i struggle a lot with reading comprehension, articulating myself when i speak to others and social anxiety. i’ve never dated anyone but had a recent situation which i feel heartbroken about it not having worked out and now im like never gonna even think ab having a crush on someone again (yes it was that bad). anyway since graduating tho i also can’t really seem to keep friends around since im a really shy person and learned most friends were just proximity. my anxiety is through the roof. i usually try to focus since im studying for an entrance exam for grad school but i accomplish nothing in a day.
i learned ab meditation helping out with this kind stuff since i don’t want to medicate and experience side effects and thought to try this out first. i also can’t afford therapy since im broke lol.
i noticed that i keep falling asleep during meditation tho LOL. i would love your advice. i feel like im pretty cooked :/sorry for the trauma dump but life be feeling a bit lost rn so any specific techniques strategies advice for me or even a routine you suggest since i do better with systems would be very appreciated.
not the conventional question here but if ur super lonely and depressed, how do you get urself motivated to study?
long story short - went through the worst deal of heartbreak in my life. it’s been 6 months but im still really down about it and having a hard time recovering.
i feel like ive also lost touch with many friends (i have them but i have no motivation to reach out and when i hang out its temporary joy but i come back to this sad reality where i keep bombing and failing at everything else in life).
does anyone have any advice on how to focus on the MCAT amidst this. i feel like a loser.
I had a connection with this guy that I still don’t fully understand, and I’m struggling to move on from it.
Long story short, I felt like we had a genuine connection, at the very least as friends, though part of me thought it might have been more. We’re both pretty shy/reserved people, so nothing was ever explicitly discussed or made official. Still, it felt obvious to me that we cared about each other.
He was always really thoughtful and gentle with me. He would remember tiny details about me that even some of my closest friends wouldn’t remember. He would ask for my advice before making decisions, hold the door for me, notice when I needed help carrying something, or help me in class if I didn’t know how to do something. He never made a big deal out of it. He would just quietly help. Whenever I was anxious or stressed, he was really good at listening, understanding, and encouraging me. He also sometimes made little jokes that always made me laugh.
I honestly don’t think I’ve ever liked someone as much as I liked him. He seemed genuinely kind, ethical, and careful with people, which is why the ghosting hurt so much.
For context, I was having a really hard year with school, and he knew that. I had a bad group project experience that got bad enough that I had to be confrontational, which is extremely uncomfortable for me because I’m naturally reserved. He was kind and understanding when I talked to him about it, but part of me wonders if maybe I overwhelmed him by sharing too much or needing support.
The situation became more complicated because we were involved in this random project together, which I know he hated. I think part of the reason I stayed in it was because of him, though even after he ghosted, I stayed because I felt ethically like you can’t just abandon a project. I also understand that, from his perspective, it may have been a minor project and maybe it made sense to leave if he wasn’t interested anymore.
Before he fully disappeared, I had a feeling he was going to leave the project, so I brought it up. He said he didn’t want to because he felt bad leaving me to do it on my own. But then he gradually tapered off anyway and basically ghosted me. I noticed it happening, and it hurt because I really cared about him, but I also would never want to keep him doing something he didn’t want to do.
Recently, he gave more context and said, in a kind of joking way, that he felt the project was exploitative. Looking back, that explanation actually makes sense and may explain why he left. It’s possible that his decision had much more to do with the project itself than it did with me, which is part of why I’ve struggled to make sense of everything.
The ghosting felt especially confusing because it seemed so out of character compared to how he had treated me before. He wasn’t someone who was super emotionally expressive, but he did show care through actions. At the same time, I had noticed what felt like avoidant tendencies. Whenever he shared something even mildly vulnerable, he would often distance himself afterward. If I checked in about it later, he would usually brush it off or change the subject. He could also come across as very nonchalant.
He has apologized for ghosting me multiple times over the last six months, which makes it even more confusing. Not once, but three separate times. We also had a call somewhere in the middle of all this, mostly for academic reasons, and that made the whole thing feel unresolved again.
At this point, we don’t really talk anymore because it’s honestly too painful for me. The frustrating part is that my feelings haven’t really gone away even though I’ve been trying very hard to move on.
I don’t text him. I don’t check his social media. I try not to bring him up to other people. I’ve been focusing on school, work, improving myself, becoming more assertive, and building better study habits. But sometimes my brain still gets stuck on it and I find myself replaying everything.
What confuses me is that we never even dated. I don’t actually know whether he liked me or not. If anything, I sometimes feel like there’s more evidence that he didn’t like me than that he did. Maybe he was only ever being nice, and my brain turned it into something bigger because I liked him. I feel really dumb because, at the time, I genuinely thought there was emotional trust between us and that he would communicate with me instead of disappearing.
I guess what I’m asking is: do you think someone can genuinely care about you and still ghost because they’re avoidant, overwhelmed, or unsure how to handle things? Or does the fact that he never really came back mean I probably overestimated the connection?
And has anyone else had a situation where a connection that was never officially a relationship like with a friend that ended up being harder to get over than an actual relationship?
i’m scoring straight up 123-125 range and can’t get it any higher. I’ve been at this plateau for 2 years now too rip.
I heard good things about this course but can anyone share if their strategies are different from what they share in their free webinars and if you have experience with this course? I can’t afford another 124 or worse lower CARS score on my 4th MCAT attempt so I’m just really scared.
I would appreciate your insights thank you.
Hey guys this is more of a crash out post. I have been trying my best to increase it but sadly cannot surpass a 125 in practice. I feel like it is so risky for me to retake the MCAT for this reason alone since sometimes I’ll score like 122-123 and if I accidentally get that on my next attempt it renders me ineligible. I was wondering if you or anyone you guys knew anyone that has gotten into med with truly a cut off bare minimum score met in one section. for example ik toronto claims to have 124 minimum in one section but I haven’t seen many ppl acc have that or maybe im just not asking the right people. sorry for the question to be framed this way I am just not too sure what my best course of action is here.
Hey guys, for those that were successful in interviews, is it lowkey just being outgoing? i’m not even joking at this point. i feel like my introversion is ruining my life I am so awkward and nervous all the time
does the thrill of getting into med die down eventually or are you just perpetually on that high throughout med school? sincerely a premed who has been trying and failing to get in 😅
also do you guys like ur classmates/were you all able to make good friends or is medicine cut throat
Extremely long VENT:
since i graduated undergrad, i’ve been pretty lonely. i’m sure i was lonely at times in undergrad too but the loneliness ive felt in grad school is different. i used to have many friends in undergrad who got into med either after 3rd or 4th year and moved on (rightfully so) and got to busy that i honestly rarely talk to them. the distance has gotten so large that i don’t even know if we could ever be close again. it’s not their fault either since med school can be busy and i also recognize that i tend to be that friend that has low confidence in myself which can be exhausting for others to be around.
anyways, i think the loneliness of this weird path of applying and failing so many times at getting into med has also been rough. ive been at home and my parents are tough to be around at times. they’re immigrants - my mom got married when she was literally 20 and my dad was like 6 years older than her. but neither of them were good in school or cared much about it. they never liked reading or studying and my dad didn’t even graduate with a bachelors degree. they’re good people and very hard working tho but emotionally pretty dysregulated. they’re usually telling me to stop chasing people and work hard but i’m like…it doesn’t really work like that. you need a village to help you get into med and you also need mentors to help you? they think that’s all BS and me making excuses and maybe they’re right idk but i’ve been trying for sm years and just keep failing so idk maybe it’s just me struggling to ask for help or not sure how to find ppl who would genuinely help me? on another note they’re always arguing and never listening or open to hearing another side which means that i didn’t really learn how to actively listen or have models of what true empathetic presence looks like lol. they also don’t seem to do understand what hard vs smart work is like.
for instance my dad bought this random self help book and my sister had said that she didn’t like that book or smth LOL. instead of asking her why, my entire family exploded and told her not to insert her unsolicited opinion, how she doesn’t think critically or consider others’ perspectives and how she was screaming….and then i joined in to defend her and they said we were both insane.
that basically sums up how even one minor topic derails in a second. every single car ride, grocery store trip, anything is always made into an argument so i feel like it’s just so lonely bc even tho i have a good family who supports me financially there’s no peace if that makes sense.
i’ve been failing the mcat (wrote it 3x and keep getting low CARS scores) bc i have so many things going on each summer. i have people pleasing issues so i feel so bad disappointing other people and just end up doing sm extra work all the time. i also have no one to talk to or mentors and now not even friends bc i feel like im bothering everyone. i also think my friends in med wouldn’t wanna hear me yap about this shit lmao cuz i might just be playing the victim and not sure how to get out of it.
i sometimes wish i could be calm, cool and collected like others and i wonder if it’s my overthinking and people pleasing that has held me back in life. it doesn’t help that im the oldest child who doesn’t have any role models in my family who pursued med and we also lack a lot of calmness in the house. i have basically no friends in grad school and all my undergrad friends have their own lives that i would hate to infringe on by talking ab my BS.
Alas i come to reddit for some advice. I also would love some advice about my summer. I’m a full time grad student, doing some research and working part time 5 days a week for around 20 hours a week, and volunteering and will be taking the MCAT. needless to say i’m extremely overwhelmed and seeking some advice on what i can do. i know it’s best to cut back on some commitments but i feel extreme guilt bc 1) if others can handle it why can’t i? 2) i feel so bad disappointing my PIs/volunteer coordinators if i have to quit especially after i’ve been accepted to these roles.
I feel like i have ADHD (not diagnosed formally) but i am someone who has quite poor intelligibility and clarity to my thoughts and speech. (Most of the time Im told I speak really fast and people usually don’t know what I’m saying or when I know something well, I still cannot explain it clearly to other people). I also am usually a pretty internally reactive person (panic or prone to anxiety or stress) and I mention this because I care a lot about my grades and outcomes so I work really hard but it almost never pays off since I feel like I’m not calm enough or mentally clear enough - perpetually overwhelmed. I also never remember what I’m reading and struggle to focus on books. I also get sleepy when I’m reading and my mind feels so overwhelmed.
Do you guys have any advice for me on how to start reading more critically and actively? What kinds of frameworks or structures do you use? And any specific advice for me too? I feel really dumb and maybe in some ways, I must be dumb but I feel like I am also trying my best given what I know. I’ve just exhausted it all.
Thank you
