How does salmonella in reptiles work?
This might be a very stupid question cause I'm also very stupid with reptiles; but I grew up under the impression that touching reptiles/amphibians would give salmonella, and I mostly stayed away from these animals all my life since my parents had this belief and never wanted kid me catching it.
Well now I'm interested in pivoting from invertebrates/aquatics to reptiles (particularly lizards, frogs, and specifically garter snakes) and I'm a bit confused whether salmonella is a contagious thing you don't need to worry about from properly kept animals (like ringworm from dog), something that doesn't exist unless specific conditions are met (like how dart frogs aren't poisonous unless fed the toxic so C.B. animals don't carry it), or if its essentially like I'm touching raw chicken every time I touch a snake or frog or their water bowl or something.
I kind just want an understanding from reptile experts whether this is a real concern or something I should ignore / not overthink too much. I never see it mentioned when looking at reptile care.
