So I watched the last act yesterday and while it was great, I just can't stop thinking about one thing: how does abstraction work?

I understand that a character abstracts when they meet their breaking point, but before episode 9 I thought it was kind of like death? Like their minds are gone and all that's left is their broken form. But that can't be the case, can it?

In episode 9, Pomni is able to go inside Jax's abstraction and talk to him. I'm not entirely sure why he started glowing before Pomni was dragged out although his abstraction did get startled by those bombs. But that whole sequence seemed to tell us that the abstracted character is still inside there, but just broken mentally.

So, what I'm really wondering is, can they still see what's happening on the outside? Are they just doomed to suffer by themselves for eternity? Or can they be brought back from abstraction?

It just rubs me the wrong way thinking that Jax and the others are just suffering alone forever.
