Reina's Story: s2 ep 5.5.2
Alright, time for part 2 of the episode I'm calling 5.5 that exists purely in the continuity of Reina's story. To say I've been excited for this part is an understatement
Anyway, we get a small time jump to the next day. Reina, now back and working again as the cook for the hotel, heads to the culinary district to pick up some much needed inventory for the hotel kitchen. With more guests living there, Reina can no longer confine herself to weekly grocery runs, and now has to transport loads of food back to the hotel at a time (thankfully, Charlie lets her borrow the limo).
The culinary district is an area of the city I came up with, and is owned by Julia Cullin, an overlord OC of mine whom I briefly mentioned in the last post. To give a brief summary of her character for those unfamiliar, Julia was once the host of a cooking show in the 1950s and 60s, and did some slimy things to ruin her rivals careers, since she felt they weren't giving cooking the proper respect it deserved. She isn't a murderer and never resorted to blood the way Vox does. More like finding blackmail material on them, or finding discrete ways to embarass them on live tv. She was ultimately poisoned by her husband who didn't approve of his wife having a famous career (he saw it as a slight on his manhood). While in Hell, she capitalized on her fame on Earth to help her rise the ranks of the Overlords and build a culinary empire of restaurants, grocery stores, and catering companies, all of which she oversees. She also has a cooking show hosted on a non-Vox affiliated network (she hates Vox since he reminds her of the husband who killed her and because she doesn't have a high opinion of most arrogant men). Julia was one of the only overlords who didn't side with Vox during ep 5. She honestly doesn't really get political unless she has to, since she prefers to focus on her own business ventures. She turned Vox down both because she hates him, and because she sees the hotel as a loyal customer base that she would prefer to keep (largely thanks to Reina).
She and Reina met because Reina frequently shops in her territory, and the two have become friends. Appearance wise, she's mostly humanoid and avout six feet tall with green hair, very pale skin (mashed potato color), yellow eyes on black sclera, and wheres a white top with rolled up sleeves, black trousers, heels, and an apron decorated with pictures of vegetables and cooking utensils.
Reina ends up at this place that is part grocery store, part restaurant. Reina usually ends up getting lunch while Julia's employees load the inventory order into the limo outside. While Reina is waiting for her food, Julia, who is working there that day, chats with her about recent events. She tells her how she told Vox to fuck himself when he came to recruit her, which makes Reina feel better, knowing at least one overlord has some standards. Julia had apparently seen the fight with Alastor, Reina, Husk, and Nifty vs. the Vees, and says she was rooting for her, and sorry to see Alastor get captured, since while she doesn't know the Radio Demon personally, any enemy of 'that dickhead' is welcome at any of her businesses. I think by this point, the relationship between Reina and Al is common knowledge, as I wouldn't be surprised if Vox revealed it after ep 4 as a way of further embarassing Alastor. Thus, Julia gives Reina her sympathies and hopes Reina will get to kick Vox's ass soon.
Both of them are surprised when the very demon they are discussing unexpectedly appears in Julia's establishment. Julia is annoyed and is prepared to have him escorted out, but Vox tells her that he's merely here for a coffee and it wouldn't look good if she 'petutantly' evicted him. Julia reluctantly has her employees serve him, though she warns him she reserves the right to refuse him further service, and that he can't do anything about it since this is her turf.
It soon becomes clear that the real reason he is here is because of Reina. Vox tries to act all charming and asks Reina to sit with him at a booth and talk. Reina is tempted to refuse, but is a little curious as to what he might try doing, and so she accepts. Julia wonders if she's out of her mind, but is ready to keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't do anything innapropriate (she's a real girl's girl).
Vox gets his coffee, and he begins his chat (which is honestly one sided at first with him mostly just talking at Reina). He remarks on his latest triumphs, hoping to ilicit anger or pain from Reina, but finds this isn't successful. He then unexpectedly shifts to the past, remarking on how much he admired her in life and saw her as the one who got away, and how he wishes he could have done things differently. He claims if he could go back, he would have treated her better. Reina doesn't believe a word of it, as his prior actions suggest he hasn't changed a bit from the slimy con artist with tendencies towards rape, murder, and stalking.
He then catches her off guard when he proposes something to her. He invites her to join his efforts, making her one of the Vees. Reina is flabbergasted, and immediately says 'heck no', saying she would never work with the man who tried to rape and kill her, and who may have killed her daughters. Vox acts embarrassed and admits he lied about the last part, and claims it was a mistake and he has regretted it (really trying to play up being a changed man even though he should have known this wouldn't work). He continues trying to butter up Reina and bring her away from the hotel and to his side, even saying he'll release Alastor and cut ties with Valentino and Velvette if she'll agree to work with him.
Unsurprisingly, none of this works. Reina doesn't believe a word he says and tells him as such.
At this point Vox gets frustrated. He then resorts to threats, saying he'll hurt Alastor if she doesn't agree, and that she will regret it. He then says he knows that she's been broken by Alastor's capture and expresses the belief that she can't cope without a man to protect and guide her and says that he can be that man. He also says that the hotel is a foolish endeavor that isn't good enough for her talents, and that she's being wasted and there's no way she's truly happy there, and that surely she must want more. She's waiting in the wings, he says, when she ought to be at the front of the show.
Julia, getting tired of Vox antagonizing her friend, steps in and offers to take care of this. Reina however, no longer nearly so afraid and having recently gotten a better grip on her own sense of self, decides that 'if he wants a show, I'll give him one'.
She then summons some of her paper animals and brings them to life.
What follows is Reina getting a solo song. The song in question is King of Anything, and is in reality a song by Sara Bareilles, but in this universe we are pretending is written for Reina and the show. The paper animals serve as her back up singers (and would be voiced by the same VA that Reina would have). Reina essentially says through the song that Vox can't change her opinions, she isn't falling for his BS, and that she doesn't need him to 'save her'. Effectively, she's signalling she's not letting her fear, her pain, or anything else she associates with Vox control her anymore, and that he has no power over her. She gets quite sassy and even faux-smug, in a way that would make Alastor proud. At the end of the song, she pays her check, bumps fists with Julia, and leaves a frustrated and angry Vox behind as she heads to the limo to return to the hotel.
You might be wondering why Vox would try to recruit her and why he thought she might say yes. Well, there's a few reasons. For one, Vox, despite hating Reina for loving Alastor and rejecting him back then, still retains some of his feelings for her, and remembers her writing talent, thinking she would make a capable consort and business partner if she did join him. He knew it would probably be a long shot, but he hoped it might work. He knew Reina was previously broken by Alastor's capture and thought maybe the prospect of his freedom would tempt Reina, or that she might have given up on the hotel with him starting to look more and more likely to succeed, and therefore be succeptible to his manipulation. He certainly played up the charm in hopes she might fall for it, but Reina would have to be an idiot for that to happen. As for his willingness to cut out Val and Vel in favor of Reina, this largely stems from the fact that the two of them are starting to push back at him because of his ego and obsessions, and so this was him hoping to get rid of future rivals in favor of someone he felt he'd better be able to control.
Beyond all that, Vox also hoped that Reina would agree because he wanted to break Alastor, and what better way to do that than to turn the Radio Demon's wife against him.
Ultimately though, Vox was an idiot to think that he could get Reina on his side. I think if all else failed, he probably hoped he could break her further, taking advantage of the hurt he believed she was still drowning in from his capturing Al, compounded with his past acts from life. Thus, when Reina not only refuses his offers but summarily claps back at him and gives him a taste of his own sharp tongued medecine and defiance, he is left shocked and humiliated.
I imagine Vox recording the whole encounter and forcing Alastor to watch it live back at Vee Tower so that Al could see him turn Reina against him, only for his actions to backfire horribly, and now Alastor gets to see his wife take Vox on in style. I think Velvette would also have been there to see it and secretly gets a kick out of it, as she admires Reina's gumption if not her fashion sense or morality.
I also think someone in the restaurant at the time of the song recorded it and posted it online, with people eating up Vox getting taken down, because for all their love of The People's Voice, he really dug himself into that one, and Reina absolutely demolished him, and I think the people of Hell probably enjoy even seeing their so called heroes get taken down a peg sometimes. I also think that despite the huge crowds in ep 5, there's a decent chunk of the population who seriously think Vox is crazy or delusional to take on heaven, so they would certainly get a kick out of Reina's song. It would also add credence to Alastor's bit in ep 7 about not everyone having fallen in line, and why Vox doens't get the approval ratings he initially wants in 8.
Ultimately, Vox just made himself look like an idiot and give Alastor more ammunition (not to mention love for Reina).
Reina ultimately returns to the hotel, smiling devilishly, knowing that even if Vox makes things a whole lot worse, she got in at least a small victory against him.
And that is episode 5.5. I hope you liked this one. It was a long time coming. When I was planning out what I wanted for Reina in season 2, I ended up listening to King of Anything and thought the song fit Reina to a tee and wrote it in to her story in season 2. I think it contrasts well with the song that would be her solo in the previous season How Would That Feel, in which she's feeling a ton of self doubt and fear. That song is also driven by her relationship, or at least her memories, of Alastor, so this song, which is driven by Reina on her own, and her own sense of self and unwillingness to give in to Vox, also adds some interesting contrast. Also, the song itself is just really good.
If I had the skills, which I sadly don't, I would absolutely make an animatic of Reina singing King of Anything to Vox, but sadly I am a mediocre artist, and am no animator. I also don't know anyone who would go through the trouble of making such a piece for me, and it would probably cost a ton of money for me to pay them anyway (I would never make someone do that without pay. I'm not that entitled). We'll just have to imagine it, I fear.
We'll be getting into episode 6 next, where things will unfortunately get sad again for obvious reasons, but don't worry. Reina won't be crumbling again. If anything, the obstacles that come her away in the episodes ahead will embolden her. But we'll just have to see.
Comment your thoughts and I hope you end up enjoying the next posts that wrap up s2. I hate that I can't keep this series up afterwards since s3 isn't out yet. Once I finish s2, I'm going to pivot over to the stories of Reina's daughters, whose story is arguably even crazier than their mom's, and intersects heavily with Helluva Boss, and also involves Reina's dad, Samael, who I've mentioned in this story, but who is still missing from the Hazbin events currently. With Sylvie and Aurelia's story, you'll find out what he's currently up to and get to know him.
I'm also contemplating a mini AU with Reina involving a sinborn child between her and Al that would not be canon to my main AU involving Reina and other OCs. It would mostly be a fun what if, but I would love to do it.
