RiNo vs Central Park

My partner and I just came back from a long weekend in Denver for apartment searching as we are moving to Denver late September!

We’re a bit torn between two apartments, one is located in RiNo while the other is located in Central Park. We like both areas a lot and think they both bring different things to the table. The biggest thing though: work commute!

My partner is going to have to work near the airport, which I know can be quite the drive from RiNo… We really love the complex we toured in RiNo but it seems like the commute could vary from 25-45 min depending on traffic or crashes etc.

Central Park would be a lot closer we just don’t LOVE the complex as much but would be completely fine with it.

The RiNo lease would be 16 months so we would be in it for the long haul, I just don’t want my partner to regret the commute! We really think the area would be a cool place to live in for a short period of tome though.

Any thoughts on this? Thank you!

EDIT: I appreciate the responses! I feel that I am getting pretty mixed reviews but I think we are leaning towards RiNo as we plan this to be our last lease in an apartment before purchasing a house (hopefully it’s a decent market by then!)

My partner understands the commute might be a pain once in a while but would like to experience downtown before settling in a suburban area for long term. We are thinking that we would look for a home in Central Park once our lease is up!

Oysters/Seafood/Steak Recs!

Hello!

My fiancé and I are visiting Denver in August since we are moving there late September. We wanted to check some areas out beforehand.

My partner’s grandparents are tagging along and they love seafood/oysters/steak so I was looking for one restaurant for a nice dinner. I was looking at a few restaurants and was surprised on how many great options there are!

I’ve narrowed it down to a list, any thoughts on these? Open to other suggestions as well!

Guard and Grace
Salt Water Social
The Hampton Social
Jacks on Pearl
Fish n Beer

TY for the recs/comments!! I’m glad I did this because before posting, I initially was leaning towards SWS (mainly since the reviews) but I am going to go with FNB. Can’t wait to try it!

Harness Training Kitten

My partner and I will be getting our first MC kitten in September and I wanted to ask some questions about harness training or hear some experiences about it.

I’ve watched quite a few videos and some give vastly different suggestions than others.

When starting harness training, start to associate positive interactions with the harness like giving treats/letting them sniff it and get used to it.

This is where I have my biggest question - should I put the harness on and just let them get used to it for small time increments a day? Or do y’all suggest a more slow introduction? Some videos say to just put it on, others say like, touch the harness to your kitten then give it a treat- then put one paw in, treat etc.

I’m also considering clicker training for about 10 minutes a day since I know kittens can have a short attention span. I really would like to get my kitten accustomed to traveling if possible!

Weight Gain on Prozac?

Hello!

I recently just started 10mg of Prozac a few days ago since I’ve been diagnosed with moderate depression.

Awhile back I was on Lexapro and it made me gain 15 pounds while actively working out (every other day in the gym) and while it helped with anxiety, it made me feel extremely self conscious about my weight.

I decided to go off of it and lost the weight, and there’s been a lot of things going on in my life to cause this depression spike.

I’m a tad worried about weight gain on Prozac, is this a common side effect?

Keeping kitten in crate while driving?

Hello!

My partner and I are getting a kitten late August/early September and then we are moving to CO in late September.

Roadtrip is about 14-15 hours but we are going to split it up and stay in a hotel halfway. (As well as do pit stops along the way)

I plan to do some harness and crate training with the kitten as well as taking it on small drives to familiarize it with the car before our trip to try to make this as stress-free as possible.

We are going to purchase this cat crate: https://a.co/d/0gx7Y9vQ - we plan to get another kitten in CO once we are more established so this seemed like a good option for the future.

My partner will be driving while I watch the kitten but do y’all just recommend just keeping it secured in the crate the whole time when driving?

I understand a loose kitten is often a terrible idea but if I am holding it with its leash and harness here are there along our drive, would that be okay?

I understand all cats are different so I know this could go really well or really bad no matter how much I prepare but looking for some advice or experiences!

Ty!

Move up my last day?

So my last day for my job is mid September since my partner and I are moving to a different state.

I am currently working for a state department and everything was going okay until something really negative happened and it triggered a mental breakdown.

I thought everything was okay, but I’m now realizing maybe it’s not okay. I’m going to see my doctor on Monday and I’m starting to think this job is burning me out a lot more than I thought it did. They are thinking it’s mild depression in that case I could take FMLA but with so much sick leave I would be a bit sad to take leave and get unpaid during that time.

Why not just use PTO? I’m a bit worried payroll is going to think I’m just trying to burn it up before I go but I really don’t think I’m in a good mental space atm. The nurse tried to reassure that it’s fine but I really want to try to end things amicably with this position to ensure I have a good reference for the next one.

I’m also going to have to help train someone to replace me, which is also stressing me out since they’re piling on work because they know I’m leaving. I’m an entry level admin professional and they have me leading all their web content and accessibility work I do not get paid enough for this, should I just screw the money and get out sooner for the sake of my brain?

Simple Miscommunication?…

I currently work for a state department and am fully remote.

I am leaving my position due to my partner finding a new job outside of our current state so I put in my official last day.

Last Friday, I set up a meeting with Payroll/Benefits to go over any question and to get clarification. When sick leave was brought up, they said it was not paid out (which is what I expected) and her exact words were, “Between now and September, I don’t care how much sick leave you use, just try to use it up the best you can” which kinda shocked me since I had 160+ of sick leave. I was a bit confused and said there’s no way that’s possible since I technically have more time than I do days left. And she said that it will stay with my account for 5 years if I ever come back but otherwise it’s lost time.

So I decided to reach out to my boss since we’re pretty close and ask if I could use it here and there sparingly (whether it be for getting off any hour early or starting an hour late) since payroll said I could try to use as much as I could before I left. At first she said, that’s fine as long as work gets done which I thought was great.

Then I get a email forwarded to me from payroll since my boss asked about it and that same lady was like “Nonono! I never said that!! She must have heard me incorrectly” and started listing off official rules.

Like wtf? First of all you tell me I can use as much as I can before I leave, secondly I check in with my boss about it because I want to still be proactive and then I get called out for misunderstanding? (Or maybe I’m just reading the email poorly?)

Sorry if this is just a vent at this point but maybe it was just a clear misunderstanding but am I in the wrong here?

At least I’m leaving so it doesn’t matter but now I feel like every time I try to take sick leave between now and then, they’re going to be suspicious.

I did respond to my boss saying that I understood sick time doesn’t get paid out, but in the call it sounded like the lady was telling me to go ahead. Which I could have done but I decided to ask my boss first because I thought that was responsible thing to do. Maybe I just Fed it up for myself. 🥲

Moving from Wisconsin To Denver!

My partner just got a job in Denver at the airport and we will be moving there in the next couple of months! We are very excited!!

I’ve been doing some light research and have been trying to figure out where we should live for our first year.

We would need to be within 30-45 min of the airport (I would say closer would be better) but I know there is traffic to keep in mind.

We’re in our mid-twenties, like sports rec leagues, good food, and places to walk around and explore. I was looking at apartments downtown near Union Station or maybe we live away from downtown to avoid traffic?… We don’t plan on having kids either (just a cat)!

Any recs would be great! Even just general tips before moving there is appreciated.

I feel like the weather will be similar to WI (as in four seasons not exactly the same at all - different climate)

jeez y’all I understand they are not the same weather wise but I didn’t realize how angry peeps would get!!

I did hear it’s a lot more dryer in CO… I will need to prepare for that since I have chronically dry lips/skin 😭 (humidifier recs I can buy right away?!)

Thank you!

Update: TY for all the comments! I can tell there’s a little back and forth xd but after reading everything I think we have a good idea where we’ll start looking. We are very excited and it’s awesome to hear a lot of Wisco folk have moved to CO as well!

Traveling with new kitten

My partner and I put our deposit in to get a MC kitten sometime this summer.

We just learned recently that my partner might be able to get a promotion but that means we would be moving late summer. This would be around the time we would get our kitten. We live in the midwest and would either be traveling to Florida or Colorado…. Either way, it’s going to be a long drive (16-20) hours with breaks/stops of course) but weren’t sure if we should just give up our deposit or get the kitten and have it go on a road trip with us.

I know all kittens react to things differently, but has anyone had a similar experience to this? Is this something we should even consider or should we just lose our deposit?

I was doing research and we would definitely get a hard crate and make it all comfy with a little box and everything but it just seems like a long time and I worry about severely stressing the kitten out. I know Gabapentin is an option but I also wasn’t sure if kittens at a young age could even take it.

Reputable WI Breeders?

While we were looking into Dynasty Maine Coons, I’m seeing mixed reviews after doing some research…

Does anyone have suggestions for breeders in WI?

Thank you!

Partner and I are considering a MC kitten! Is getting just one to start okay?

Hello!

My partner and I have been looking at kittens (both of us have experience with cats).

We want to start with one to see how it goes but I keep seeing everywhere that two is better especially when they are younger. I don’t think we can afford two at the moment (thinking of adopting somewhere else) but wanted to know of anyone could share their experience if you have a solo MC kitten?

Also would love some general MC kitten advice! I’ve always adopted my cats when they were at least 1 or older cats but never have gotten a kitten before so it feels a bit daunting.

Like for example, should we let it sleep with us in our bedroom or maybe give it a night in a kitty proof bathroom space (with food, litter box, and water etc)? I know kittens are a lot of work so I’n really trying to prepare myself as much as I can!

Some background information, I WFH so I’ll always be home while my partner works in-person.

Thank you!

Wow thank you for all the responses! Already feeling so much support from this community and it makes me really excited to get our kitten!

Pain on on top of left knee cap

I play ultimate frisbee and it’s the new season. After a few weeks of league, I noticed the top part of my left knee felt puffy and when I extend my knee there’s a sharp pain where I can fully extend it. When I have it straight and touch it, there’s slight pain/swelling.

I tried to do some calf raises and couldn’t even do that because at the top of my raise my knee would feel pain then almost “give out”.

I am wondering what this would be? I do have a PT appt schedule for my other knee (something else 🫠) so I will find out eventually but I also want to know if there’s anything I can do now to start recovering.

I didn’t really notice it yesterday at my game (sprinting, stopping abruptly, jumping) but that might have been adrenaline masking the pain.

I’m assuming I should fully stop until my PT appt?

Thank you

Should I keep my car until it’s not useable or just sell it for what I can get?

Hello!

I have a 2016 Ford Explorer (Police Interceptor) that I got back in 2021.

It has no console in it, 140k miles, and works great as a daily driver. I WFH and just use it for errands so I drive it around 5-6 times a month.

Recently I needed to get the coolant hoses replaced which costed me about 1k. It got me to think whether I should sell it soon or just ride it out until it dies. Even if I did sell it, not sure how much it would get me since it’s older. Runs fine though.

Any thoughts or suggestions on this?

Thank you!
