Risk in wearing sleeveless shell under suit jacket for interview?

Is there any reason I shouldn’t wear a sleeveless shell as my top for a lateral associate interview? I guess I’m paranoid that there would be a situation where they’d say to take my suit jacket off, like at a lunch or something? (And I have a very tasteful and pretty tattoo sleeve that I’d rather not show off at a job interview.) Or is it just so unlikely that the jacket would come off / that I couldn’t simply politely decline to remove it?

It’s hot and humid as all hell and I’m a ~ sweaty girl ~ so I’d really prefer not to be stuck in a long sleeve shirt under my suit jacket.

My other options are just a normal button down, which is what I’ve always done for interviews and will look polished and cover my arms if for some reason the suit jacket comes off (and it’s dark enough that no sweat should be visible). But I’ve just never found a comfy button down.

I also have a long sleeve fitted cotton (? It’s soft?) shirt that would look like a shell, keep the arms covered, and is way more comfy than a button down.

Anyway, overthinking this? Or do I just do the normal default and where the stupid button down? Thanks!

Topo Ultrafly (stability) hurts arches but so does Puma Velocity Nitro (neutral); current shoe is asics gel kayano

Once again on the hunt for a running shoe! (Needs to have some cross training compatibility, using these for hyrox.) My current shoes are ASICS gel kayano 32. I feel great in these shoes but as I’ve increased mileage, I’m getting blisters on my pinky toes and nail trauma on my big (nail lifting/separating) and second (bruising) toes. Thus began my quest for a shoe with a bigger toe box.

Topo was highly recommended. Because I previously had arch problems in puma velocity nitro (neutral shoe), and given that the kayano is a stability shoe, I went with the Topo ultrafly. But my arches are NOT vibing.

I like the toe box which makes me want to try the Topo Atmos 2 next, which is the Topo recommendation I saw for a neutral shoe. But I’m worried I’m just going to have a repeat of the Puma velocity nitro.

My other idea is to size up in kayano. I’ve seen that recommended generally and was planning to size up anyway with the ultrafly until I went for a run with them and felt the arches. But I do have wide feet and think the wider toe box would be a good thing.

So what the heck do my feet need? I’m guessing that the ultrafly is just more support than I need. But how do I know if something is just a slight stability shoe (like my kayanos) or a mega stability shoe (like the ultraflys) (feel free to disagree my labels here). I’ve also seen stuff about heel drops (?) and I’m not sure if that’s related.

Anyway, what should my next step be? What should I be looking for? Does this require trial and error or should I be able to tell if a shoe will work based on the specs?

Thank you all!

Trial duties for “appeals and issues” lawyers

Many appellate practice groups include other “legal issues” like dispositive motions and preserving objections during trial. Obviously this will vary by firm, but I’m trying to understand a bit more what this entails and how it compares (substantively and based on personal enjoyment) to “just” appeals.

So whether you’re in the practice group itself or have received support from someone in such a practice group, I’m looking for more information on what the “legal issues” and “trial support” look like in the day to day, what’s the prep like, how does it compare to doing an actual appeal? Do you like it? Is it faster paced with less prep time? Are you often brought in for trial arguments or just briefing? Etc etc

Thank you and happy Friday!

ACOTAR: The Unofficial Musical - "The Game Won't End" (Rhysand's Villain Song) | Under The Mountain - Pixel Playhouse

I just wanted to share this incredible video by Pixel Playhouse that I stumbled upon on youtube. I'm not affiliated in any way, but as a musical theater + romantasy girly, this absolutely made my day. They also have a song for Feyre and a song with Feyre and Tamlin. I believe they're still creating more songs.

Not only is this incredibly catchy, but I do feel that it captures Rhysand very well. I also love that we can see the singers because both of their facial expressions are incredible.

Of course I'd love to hear peoples' thoughts on this, but mostly I just wanted to share it for everyone else to enjoy.

Felt Chilly During First Race (in Miami)

Hello everyone! During my first hyrox race in Miami, I noticed that I felt chilly (maybe even clammy?) for almost all of the race and I'm trying to figure out if that was a body-freaking-out thing or if it was something more normal like being sweaty in a cold convention center. I ask partly for health reasons and partly because I'm debating whether to wear a long sleeve shirt for my next race in D.C. (*Note I'm a FL native so I don't think it was a weird humidity response thing but who knows.)

Despite the race being BRUTAL (I was so underprepared), I didn't have any dizziness or faintness that you would expect if the chill was my body freaking out. Though my heart rate was quite high for the entire race (average HR was 169, though anecdotally it was in the 170s every time I checked, max during race was 185, my actual max HR is like 189/190; I'm 29F).

I don't recall feeling cold before the race (though obviously the convention center is cold), but I did notice it pretty early on, which aligns with when I'd have started sweating.

I'm leaning toward this being a sweat thing. I'm a very sweaty girl (was wearing a tank top and long leggings), especially on my arms. And I felt the chill mostly on my shoulders/arms. But I asked the girl next to me during wall balls if she felt cold at all and she said heck no and gave me a look like I was about to die (she was fantastic, I really needed to be next to someone like her to get me through that final station).

Has anyone else experienced this? Do we think it was the tank top? The "wind tunnel" (my bf's words) from the horde of men? Anyone have any experience wearing a long sleeve shirt for the race?

Thanks! And see ya'll in DC! (And hopefully Tampa but lol @ that so far.)

Need a break from daughter of no worlds series

I just finished the second book of the daughter of no worlds series and I’m over it. I tried reading the prologue of {mother of death and dawn by Carissa Broadbent} and I just kept rolling my eyes, which I take as the final sign that I should take a break from this series. >!Literally only care about Aefe’s story at this point (felt this way for 80% of book 2)!< and I’m just generally over Tisannah and >!Max!< both as narrators (who I think speak with the same “voice”) and characters.

I’m looking for something more plot focused and reasonably well written (time and place for lower writing quality but this is not it). Prefer slow burn, to the point that I’m starting to wonder if I lose interest once FMC and MMC are together, though I suspect an interesting plot fixes this—I generally prefer fantasy romance to romantasy. I do love fae (mostly as depicted in Cruel Prince & Emily Wilde) but I wonder if I’m burning out on it. Also getting really tired of fated mates (esp with weird age gaps), but not a dealbreaker. Strong preference for single POV from FMC (which takes {Paladin’s Grace by T. Kingfisher} out of the running. Deal breaker if sequels don’t follow the same character (which is why I’ve ditched Crowns of Nyaxia and the rest of ACOTAR).

Not a requirement to pick from TBR but obv helpful. Top end of TBR includes (in no order) but is not limited to:

{When the Moon Hatched by Sarah Parker}
{Bride by Ali Hazelwood}
{A Stage Set For Villains by Shannon Spann}
{Throne in the Dark by AK Caggiano}
{An Academy for Liars by Alexis Henderson}
Book of Azriel might also be on the list

Books I’ve Loved:
{The Cruel Prince by Holly Black} (full series)
Fourth Wing & ACOTAR books 1-3
Rachel Gillieg’s books
{Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent}
First Emily Wilde book

Books I’ve Enjoyed
Other Emily Wilde books
Scholomance (*I have some real issues with the ending though)
Bridge Kingdom (though I maintain that this is fiction, not fantasy)

Books I’ve Hated:

Mostly just Quicksilver, DNF’d Brimstone and frankly should have DNF’d quicksilver. Saeris is the most unlikable FMC I’ve ever met, though that’s not the only reason I dislike the story.

Also DNF’d throne of glass series around book 4

Thank you! (Also I didn’t know if I was supposed to bracket all the books I mentioned so I picked the worst option and inconsistently tagged them.)

Convince me to not quit?

TLDR; money vs happiness, might get fired anyway, can afford to quit if I go on a strict budget

.

Biggest reason to not quit is I have over $150k in student loans and am living in a HCOL area. For most people, I think that would be reason enough. This isn't even a question for my non-lawyer family: stay at the job to pay off my loans and then I can do whatever I want.

Turns out I'm a marshmallow though who is deeply affected by hating my job. Some days I think I'm okay at the firm, but most days I'm just unhappy. The reason to stay at the job is the money and the "flexible" schedule--I can go visit my parents/work from home pretty much whenever I want (this is a huge bonus to be fair).

But I hate the law firm work structure/hierarchies, I hate the work that I'm doing. I have work that I'm passionate about and that I want to do and it is not this job. I feel like my career is on pause while I stay at my firm because I just don't see a lot of crossover between what I'm doing and what I want to do. But really I'm just unhappy.

I have an offer from a state-level public interest job that pays about $80,000. On a fairly strict budget, I can make that work (dual income household, no kids, but do have dogs); I'd be able to afford my current minimum loan payments and would have a couple hundred dollars (lol) leftover each month for savings (on top of ~$20k savings currently). (*also student loan forgiveness if I stay in PI, but I'm not making any assumptions with that)

It's not my dream job; it's more of what I could see myself doing late in my career when I'm done doing all the Big Amazing things that I want to do with my career. But it also doesn't have to be my forever job; it could just be what I do for now so that I can bring some happiness back into my life.

If I stay at my firm, I'm going to have to ramp up my effort; my low hours have been noted (averaging 120-150 per month; but this includes a ramp up period), and though the vibe wasn't "increase your hours immediately or your fired," there's obv only so long my hours can be low for. So part of my concern is that even if I try to stick it out at the firm, I'm just going to become more unhappy because I'm going to have to push for higher hours / I might not even make it at the firm. At the same time, I may just need to get my shit together.

.

Thanks for your thoughts. I feel like I'm being silly. I know ya'll understand the stresses of the job, but it's what we get paid for and obv I took on my student loans knowing that I would likely need to big law for a couple of years. Tis only the consequences of my own choices.

Path to appellate PD; is this job switch detrimental to goal?

TLDR; want to quit firm to clerk (permanent position) at state intermediate appellate court but don’t know its effect on career goals. Job history so far is law firm, fed COA, law firm.

I’m a fairly new lawyer (2.5 years) and I’ve realized that what I really want to do is appellate public defense, ideally at the federal level, but I’m open. (Sorry to say I have no interest in trial work.) I know this is very competitive and I don’t have the ideal resume for it bc I’ve mostly been at law firms / never interned with a PDs office. I’ve briefed and argued a criminal appeal through a clinic at my law school, I’ve clerked on a federal appeals court, and I generally have the requisite writing and research skills. It just hasn’t been public interest focused.

The plan was to make some money at the law firm for as long as possible and then transition to public defense. But I’m so unhappy at the firm that I want to make the switch now. Ideally I’d be able to switch directly to an appellate PD position, but there aren’t any openings at the moment and again, based on my resume, idk if they’d even interview me. (I did cold apply to one local PD that I know hires separately for appellate positions, but haven’t heard back.)

Given this uncertainty about openings/whether I’d even get an interview, I’ve been looking at other public interest jobs. I’ve always said I’d be interested in career clerking so I applied to a permanent position at an intermediate appellate court and got an offer. (Woo!)

But now I’m wondering if it’s a bad idea to make the switch? It’ll have way more research and writing than my firm job, where I’m mostly working on discovery stuff. But the firm is also associated with a lot of ~prestige~ so I’m not sure if staying there would be better for trying to transition to an appellate PD position? Or maybe PDs offices don’t care a lick about that.

Thanks for any insight you can offer. I’m unhappy but I don’t want to mess up / close off my ideal career.

I was wondering if anyone could offer some insight what it’s like to do state level appellate PD work? I admit I’m only familiar with federal level work. Is your caseload higher? Do you find it manageable? How often are state courts having oral argument? How much autonomy do you feel you have?

Obviously it’ll vary by state, but I’d really appreciate any and all insight you could provide. Tysm!
