Hyrox as a Sedentary Person

Okay, I need Reddit to tell me whether I’m being dramatic or if this is absolutely insane (and potentially dangerous?)

My husband (33M) and his friend signed up for a HYROX. My husband has done maybe one training session. It was a .5 mile jog and several body weight exercises.

For context, he does not go to the gym, is generally pretty sedentary, doesn’t really eat particularly healthy, etc. On the occasions he has come with me to a HIIT class, he has literally thrown up.

I assumed that as HYROX got closer, reality would set in and he’d drop out. Nope. He is completely convinced he can do it. When I ask he says “well, it’s partners so it’s split up.”

I’m sure he can physically drag himself across the finish line somehow. But the fact that a person who basically does zero exercise thinks they can just show up and complete a HYROX with essentially no training is.. something

Has anyone actually watched a completely sedentary person attempt a HYROX with no training?

How welcoming are hyrox events for newcomers? Are there any fitness benchmarks one should achieve before doing one?

I’ve done Spartan races historically and never felt out of place. I’m trying to talk my wife into doing hyrox open doubles with me April of next year, hopefully plenty of time to train. She brought up a question that I didn’t have an answer to - “is hyrox as welcoming as Spartan?” I’m curious as well. Is there any recommendations as far as “yeah if you can run an x minute 5K and complete x physical feats comfortably you’ll be fine”?

TIA

Can you fall forward on burpee broad jumps?

I've done this in the past, and it seems to cover a lot more distance, but most athletes don't do it. Essentially, you do a burpee broad jump, stand up, and then fall forward (feet don't move) the height of your body.

Adidas Dropset Pro vs. Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 4 Hyrox

Looking for an all rounder pair of shoes for hyrox training/race. Anyone have experience with BOTH pairs of shoes and can chime in?

Thanks in advance!

I added up the mat splits for 248 finishers and the roxzone beat seven of their eight stations. Is anyone training it?

I got curious about where roxzone time actually goes, so I pulled the public splits off the Hyrox results site for 248 finishers, sampled evenly down the results at New York and London, men and women, from 56 minutes out to 2h48.

Median roxzone was 6:19, about 7% of the race. For the median athlete that is longer than seven of their eight stations. The only one that reliably beats it is wall balls, and even that is only about two thirds of the field.

The bit I did not expect is that you can take it apart. The results carry a mat when you come off the run, a mat when you start the station, a mat when you finish it, and a mat when you rejoin the run. So the roxzone splits cleanly into walking in and walking out.

Walking out took about 1.5 times as long as walking in, and that held for 97% of the people I looked at. Both venues, both sexes. Median was 2:26 in and 3:45 out.

Which is obvious once you say it. You come off the run and go straight at the station because the clock is right there. You finish the station wrecked, and the walk back to the run is where you quietly take your recovery.

It also gets worse the slower you are. Fastest quarter of the field sat around 4:48 of roxzone. Slowest quarter was 9:06.

So: does anyone deliberately practise the exit, coming off a sled or off wall balls and getting back into run rhythm without the walk? Or is that recovery you genuinely need and the time is just real?

I build a split timer for this called RoxSplit, which is what got me looking. All the numbers above are from the public results though, not from the app.

is anyone going for a Murph this year?

I know the Murph wod is a Crossfit thing and NOT a Hyrox related activity... but, at the same time, most of the Hyrox boxes (at least in some places) are Crossfit related as well... with that being said, anyone here from Hyrox is planning to do the Murph wod in December?

I'm thinking about how to align the Murph preparation with the Hyrox routine... Maybe one of the strenght sessions being replaced with Pull ups / push ups with a weight vest.

Tks.

What are the dimensions of the racer's box during the sled pull station?

I can't find any official measurements for the white box you stay within as you walk back/pull the sled.

Any problem on spine?

Hi everyone! This my first post btw..I've been a hybrid athlete (amatueur) for over a year now, from Istanbul, Turkey. My sports background is; I cycled for 3 years between age 21-24 (40 miles a day 3-4 days a week), did fitness in gym between 24-26. Went to swimming, basketball and tennis courses when I was a kid (8 to 11), I even got a bronze medal from a swimming contest from that the course 😄. I had to quit sports between ages 26-40. And I was diagnosed with thoracic disc herniation, loss of cervical lordosis, scoliosis on my spine (I was a fashion and still life photographer) with MRI results after I had severe back pains. The physical therapy doctor always recommended me to swim. 13 months ago, after my daughter's insists, I began to swim with her in the pool and decided to swim with intervals, improved my technique and swimming economy.

Then a couple of months later I added core excercises and then walking 5-6 kms (3-4 miles) every single day. For over 3-4 months I was doing 3 workouts every single day and then one day when I was doing my swimming workout, at the begining of it, my body and nervous system gave up (like hitting to a wall), my body was on fire, breathing heavily and my pulse went very up (160-170 bpms), I could see that from my watch 😑 I overtrained the hell out as a starter..So my workout plan changed completely from that day, only 1 workout a day. Everything is going very well now. For about 6-7 months, I even adapted my body for running, doing running and walking intervals. Now I can run non stop 6 km (3-4 miles) in the forest 2 days a week, can swim 2 km (1.2 miles) a day (3 styles) and just added functional exercises at the end of my core workout routine with ressistance bands. I'm 175 cm (5 feet 9). Was 87 kg (192 lbs) before and now 78 kg (172 lbs). My body fat was %26-27 and now %15-16. But I still worry that my spine will be or can be a problem in the near future.

I was wondering, do you have any health issue or problem on your spine like this (disc herniation etc..)? How do you manage? Do you have back pain sometimes? (Every since I started to workout I don't but I worry alot)

Crossing the finishing line with toddler?!

saw this a few months back on insta...a guy picked up his daughter from behind the fence after wallballs and finished carrying her. i found this to be quite the cute idea and plan to do the same in my next race, already told my 2.5 yo daughter about it and I think she's as excited as myself.

i was wondering if there's anything in the rulebook that would give me a DNF? i'd definitely carry her (not let her run on her own) and also only if i feel strong enough to not collapse at the end of the race.

any other thoughts/concerns?

cheers

Just Registered for my first Hyrox

I am a newbie to Hyrox, and I find it very intriguing/challenging. While I am no athlete , I take my fitness seriously and have been training in the gym for over 10 years now. Over the past 2 weeks, I've been absorbing as much information as I can about this event. What advice would you have for a newbie who has a slightly competitive nature? This is my first time racing, and I have 2 months to prep.

I would really love your advice and insights if any.

Hyrox Flex Policy

here to voice my frustration with the hyrox flex policy! i always purchase the flex option with my ticket, as i never know when i’ll need it, and i haven’t needed it until now.

it’s two weeks before our race & my doubles partner was assigned military orders effective immediately (so he cannot make the race). i know i can get a 50% refund in the current time frame, but asked hyrox if they could make an exception for an 100% refund considering this is a government order completely out of our control. of course, no flexibility on the policy.

i also see that i can make one name change, but i dont have anyone else who can race with me since we were coming from out of town & it’s so close to race date. does anyone know if i can use the one name change per ticket, or per order? as in changing both names on the doubles tickets if i try to sell.

anyways, this is definitely a bummer. we’ve both trained so hard but there will be more races in the future!

I built something for the HYROX community. Would love your honest feedback

Hey HYROX community,

I've been working on something for a while and thought it was finally time to share it here.

I think most of us have seen the posts. Someone is looking for a Doubles partner, someone's partner had to pull out last minute, or you want to do a race but none of your friends are willing to suffer with you.

That's where the idea for ROXMATCH came from.

It's pretty simple. It's a platform for HYROX athletes to find other athletes to train or race with.

I'm a HYROX athlete myself and I basically started building this because I thought, why isn't there an easier way to find someone?

It's still early and there are plenty of things I want to add and improve. Relay matching is one of the things I'm already working on for the next version.

But instead of building everything in my own little bubble, I thought I'd put it out here and ask you guys.

Have a look at it. Try it if you're looking for someone. And please tell me what you think, especially if there's something you don't like or something you think is missing.

ROXMATCHAPP.COM

And if you know someone who's looking for a partner, send it to them. That's probably the biggest help I could ask for at this stage.

Would genuinely love to know what you guys think.

Never race alone.

Can Confirm Los Campeones Downtown Rooftop

Rooftop will be insane. Full Hyrox area with four lanes and all of the equipment and accessories…. Turf area and big rig with adjacent roll open doors with all the stuff inside…. Equipment area with plate loaded machines from Gym 80 under a retractable translucent film so when it’s 105 the equipment isn’t scalding.

Burpee Broad Jump Noob Questions: Hyrox in December

Hello folks!

I'm 39F doing my first Hyrox in December.

I've done a lot of strength training over the years but in bits and pieces and have often neglected my cardio. After training for a half marathon (and unfortunately having to stop after 16km) I decided that I could realistically imagine completing a Hyrox now that my cardio is a bit better.

Naturally time is not my main concern: I just want to finish.

I see my major blocker as being the lunges (which I just need to practice because right now I don't get low enough), and the burpee broad jumps. Everything else I feel comfortable and familiar enough with it to be able to just work on it over the coming months and get there.

Aside from exhausting me breath-wise, I tried 2-3 burpee broad jumps out in my living room and was only able to jump about 80cm and I stumbled when I landed.

For the burpee broad jumps, I have a few questions:

  1. Since I have 3.5 months til the event, am I better off starting with general training (e.g. training push ups, step ups, jumps) or by doing the full movement ASAP?
  2. 80cm is not very much - how can I train this to be further? I don't love the idea of doing 100 of these after running 1km.
  3. What happens rules-wise if I land with both feet but stumble on landing? Can I go back to where I landed or do I have to repeat the whole rep?
  4. I have read that I can step out and step back in: is that true and if so, is there a strategy that is popular on how to do this?
  5. The pessimistic question: What happens if I literally can't finish these? How long can I be stuck on a station before they just ask me to leave? 😅

Where to improve on next?

I completed my first pro solo with a time of 1:24...aside from wall balls (I blew up at the end) where should I dedicate my time to see the biggest improvement next time?

Open or Pro

So I recently bought hyrox tickets but forgot if I selected open or pro. How can I check which option I picked since it’s not on my ticket. Thanks in advance.
