Franklin Miles Park for the 4th was awesome!

We live a few blocks from Franklin Miles Park and didn't know what to expect when the city decided to move the 4th of July party to the neighborhood, but I have to say it was great! Long before the fireworks started the lawns were covered with families having picnics, the playgrounds were absolutely buzzing with laughter among new friends, and the grass in front of the stage was full of people dancing and enjoying the live music. How great it was to be able to ride bikes to the neighborhood park and be part of such an atmosphere - certainly one of the strongest feelings of community we've had in Santa Fe.

Good job to the organizers and to all the friendly folks who showed up to share a fun time at the park.

Lost Certified Letter

I sent a graduation card to my nephew with some cash inside as a certified letter. My mistake I guess. It made it to the big distribution center a town away and then nothing, no movement, no scan updates for over a month.

I filed a lost mail case and received absolutely no follow up so I filed a complaint with the Postal Inspection Service and this at least got the ball rolling. They said it didn't rise to the level of their involvement but they referred it to some actual lost mail group that contacted me. Unfortunately they were only able to tell me the same info I could get from looking up the tracking number. They then said that my case was closed and that there was nothing they could do.

So it was either lost or stolen at the postal distribution facility and there's apparently nothing to be done. Never sending anything via certified mail ever again. Thanks USPS.

Best way to proceed

I just finished breaking out this section of bubbling stucco and am wondering the best way to get the new stucco patch to adhere. Original 1960 stucco is mostly exposed with a couple holes that go all the way to the original tar paper and wire lathe which is still in good shape. The majority of the breakout was a second coat put on maybe 20 years ago that was poorly adhered and had no mesh or anything like that holding it together. Should I attach wire lathe to the original stucco surface where exposed and build the patch up from that? Probably a bit more than 1/2" of relief between old stucco and top of newer stuff.

Bike to Work Day

Hey City of Santa Fe, in honor of National Bike to Work Day can we please talk about all of the traffic signals along designated bike routes or roads with striped bike lanes that don't recognize bikes at all!? Here's just a few that are along my regular commute, I'm sure there are many many more.

  • Siringo and St. Francis - traffic detection camera doesn't recognize bikes (striped bike lane)
  • Alta Vista and St. Francis - traffic detection camera doesn't recognize bikes (bikeway)
  • Galisteo and St. Michaels - in ground vehicle detection doesn't recognize bikes (striped bike lane/bikeway)
  • Botulph and St. Michaels - in ground vehicle detection doesn't recognize bikes (bikeway)
  • Galisteo and Paseo de Peralta - in ground vehicle detection doesn't recognize bikes (bikeway)

This may seem like just an annoyance, but if only cars are detected at major crossings then the light changes for a few seconds only, often leaving slower traffic stranded in the intersection as cross traffic gets the green.

If you're directing bike traffic along these official bike routes, the signaling should probably be considered.

Just got the email from the Texas Board!

Finally, a mere 52 days after taking the PG exam, Texas sent me an email saying I passed! Anybody know the timeline for being issued the actual Professional Geologist license once all of the forms have been submitted?
