Rivets! Polaroid used some oddball rivets in the SX-70 and replacements are hard to find until now!
I've been looking for a better rivet solution for a better part of a year now and I've finally put something together that works.
I know these questions will be asked lol.
- yes pop rivets can work but they are a lot bigger than the original ones and I found them to be a pan to install because the tool is huge.
- these take a rivet tool set that as of now looks to be made/sold by one person.
I wanted rivets that as closely matched the original size as possible, were easy to find, and easy to install.
A few months ago I stumbled upon these open grommet type rivets but it took a lot of trial and error to get the right tools to set them.
Now I can replace all the rivets on a SX-70 except the two that hold the flash socket in the manual focus models.
Here's a list of the sizes you'll need.
- Bellows to lens board 1.5mm
- Bellows to back panel 2mm
- Lens board hinges 1mm
- Film door flap 1.5mm
Depending on how you removed the old rivets you might need to go up a size or embiggen the holes a tiny little bit. I did all mine by pushing through a small screwdriver and wiggling it around a little.
The ones for the bellows should be taped with black electrical tape or filled with black silicone to prevent light leaks.
Here's the tools you'll need. There's others out there but they all are worthless lol. These have a spring loaded pin in the base and that's the key to getting them to work. They come with some rivets too so you don't even need to buy rivets for awhile! https:// www.etsy.com/listing/1743168807. These tools are fairly cheap for what you get and they ship from China so I recommend just buying all the sizes they offer.
I also hated drilling out the rivets because they just love to eat bits. So I found these vintage eyelet pliers that I modified to push the rivets out easily. Now I can quickly pop them out with no power tools. You can still find these pliers on eBay pretty easily and I modified them with a hacksaw blade and hand file.
I’m calling it the Two Bit Counter
This was my weekend project. I wanted a counter that would work with one of my double exposure modded SX-70 Sonars and 680 and this is what I came up with.
It’s a going to be a small multi color LED that will light the counter with a color according to the shots left and flash it that number of times. The counter only changes on an ejection and not an exposure.
It will auto reset when a new pack is inserted and it will remember the count if the camera is powered off.
Yes it’s crazy and could be done other ways but I kinda like it lol!
I tried out the CU-70 again. I didn’t quite nail the focus on the close up one but I like it.
This one of those truly one of a kind pictures! I had swapped a half pack to the Polaroid thing that takes pictures of your phone then puts it on film and accidentally overexposed the first picture. This is what came out!
