German car show in Dayton, Ohio

Taking Polaroids of cars always involves some choices since you can’t really get a long wide car in a square frame lol.

Sears Camera Catalogs 1978 to 1981

I bought these so I could see how my Sears Special SX-70 Sonar was sold in 1980 the year I was born.

Yes! I’m a nerd!

Beat up Black and White in Luxor

This black and white film had a rough life. It was technically expired, bounced around in my bags for two weeks without a box, and it was over 100F when I used it 😂😂. But I kinda like the look!

My olive fork in action!

I absolutely love finding somewhat antique kitchen implements that can be repurposed as SX-70 repair tools 😂.

This is an olive fork that I’ve been using to remove the shutter blade arm in a much safer way than the screwdriver under it way. I haven’t had it want to pull out that pin at all and it’s very easy and fast. Also it supports the arm from both sides of the pin so it keeps the pin from bending if the arm is really stuck on there.

I got the idea after my friend Erick of Time Zone Camera showed me his chip lifter tool he used. I looked for his tool but then I found a set of these olive forks for a couple bucks.

I’ll post for more pictures in the comments.

Yes, another sunset!

When on a dive boat in the middle of a sea there’s not many things to take Polaroids of so you’re getting yet another sunset lol!

I’ve tried this double exposure a few times now and this is the best so far. It kinda looks like a slight nuclear explosion behind her.

Scuba Diving can drop that sugar fast!

This is my first diving trip since I was officially diagnosed as a T1. It’s been a bit of a challenge being off my pump for the week but I’m starting to get the hang of it.

Most of the time I get in at 150 to 200 and get out 50 minutes later in the 70’s.

The Grand Egyptian Museum

We have officially started our Egypt adventure. We spent the day in Cairo and are heading to the Red Sea town of Hurghada tomorrow to spend a week scuba diving. I really wish I had one of those awesome SX-70 dive cases! I’d be the coolest nerd under the water😂😂!

These scans are kinda terrible, some of the film was expired and x-rayed, and the lighting is museums is rough. So we get what we get 😂.

Great video on the optics on the SX-70 and a few other Polaroid cameras by Bill Plummer

I stumbled upon this video about a year ago and learned a ton from it from one of the guys that designed the optics in most of the cameras we love.

I completely lost it in the depths of the internet until today when I finally got the idea to have AI find it for me. It took some poking but it finally hit on it from my limited description.

The audio is terrible lol but it’s worth a watch for sure.
Hopefully now that it’s here it won’t take AI to find it again.

My crazy idea to make new SX-70 fresnels on the cheap!!

The fresnel is one thing that has never been reproduced and I have an idea how to do it with 1940’s technology lol!

  1. you get 6 of the best fresnels you can find.
  2. remove them from the carrier.
  3. inset them in a circle into a vinyl record blank so now they are the “music”.
  4. have that blank turned into a record stamper by having it electroplated like you would any record.
  5. stamp the records in clear plastic just like a clear record.
  6. electroplate the backs of them with a layer of silver and then nickel to make a mirror.
  7. make a cutting die like we are using to make leather skins.
  8. stamp out your nice fresh fresnels!!!!
  9. profit?!? lol nope sell them at cost!!!!

If the vinyl reproduction process can make music that an audiophile likes then it can make light bounce around too!

Doing it this way and using the existing record production process should save us from having to make a whole new set of tooling from scratch.

I got this nutty idea from the patent for the fresnel.

Sunset from one the highest points in Dayton, OH

It’s pretty hard to get a decent sunset picture around here because there’s always something in the way.

Just look at this tree being a better door than a window 😂!
