Super Smash Brothers started on the Nintendo 64, but what if it didn't?

Starting a series of Smash rosters, this hypothetical roster takes a look at what a Smash game would look like if it had released on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, and the sequels to come were on every console going forward (GameBoy, SNES, N64, etc.)

Since this is the year of 1990, it means that certain obvious inclusions like Marth, Kirby and Sukapon would be impossible to include.

This hypothetical game would release with 8 characters, which is fitting for an 8-bit console.

001. Mario
As the mascot of Nintendo, he is a complete no-brainer.

002. Little Mac
A fighting game character! Well, technically more of a sports game character, but still, Punch-Out!! sold relatively well on the NES, so Little Mac earns his slot on the roster.

003. Link
The Legend of Zelda was yet another one of Nintendo's larger franchises, so yet again, no brainer.

004. Samus
While not as iconic, Metroid was one of the Famicon Four, so her inclusion is justified.

005. Pit
With Captain N: The Game Master upcoming around this time, and with how the original Kid Icarus was sort of a success, Pit's inclusion was also justified.

006. Excitebiker
Excitebike was also a relatively popular NES game, and would be this game's joke character.

007. Bowser
With how popular the Mario series was, it definitely deserved more than just 1 rep, and the easiest resort was on Bowser, mainly since Donkey Kong was at a very low point in '90, and Luigi wasn't his own character yet, and besides, Bowser's inclusion would bring in a heavyweight.

008. Takamaru
For the game's final character, we have a Japanese-exclusive character from a Japanese-exclusive game. This may seem weird to do, but remember that Sakurai once included Lucas from Mother 3 into Brawl, and Nintendo has yet to even release Mother 3 outside of Japan, so I let him join, and besides, who wouldn't want the Famicon Four rounded-out in a Famicon game.
