Modern cars have all gotten faster, what are some that are still too slow?
We all know that hp and torque numbers have only gone up on most cars, with there being tons of non-EV cars and SUVs with 300-500hp driving around. We also know that you don’t actually need all that power for daily driving, but what are some cars that are still dangerously slow?
Recently rented a 2.5L Outlander, non-hybrid, and actually felt unsafe merging into fast traffic. An NA 4 banger paired with a CVT in a car meant to haul 7 people was *not* the right choice IMO. It was just screaming and not going anywhere as cars behind me caught up quickly, I immediately learned I needed to be very patient when turning onto big roads. I couldn’t imagine how it would feel with all the seats full. Pretty much every newer car I’ve driven has felt significantly quicker.
Edit: lol in classic reddit fashion, people absolutely *yearn* to tell you you’re wrong. “Oh if you can’t drive a slow car you’re the problem”. It’s not about me lol, I’ll be fine in any car. It’s about the millions of terrible drivers on the road in the US particularly, but everywhere else as well. Also, this is just for discussion, nowhere did I say that we need to make all cars faster.
It’s too easy to get a license and get behind the wheel of a fast car here, that’s why my examples pertain mostly to the US. We have tons of very inexperienced drivers behind the wheels of cars capable of decimating several families at once. We also have tons of people who are terrified to press the gas more than 50%, a slow car, at low throttle could quickly become dangerous. Combine that with some moron merging all the way into the left lane at 10% throttle and that’s how you end up with rear end collisions that kill people. Not saying cars are too slow, but some are too slow for the people that drive them. If you have a low hp car, you need to know to either keep right or step on it. Most people do neither.
