THIS IS RESYNCED

13 years later, the iconic pirate adventure returns with a slew of new features, story content and gameplay improvements.

Set in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy, Black Flag Resynced tells the story of Edward Kenway, a brash Welsh privateer turned pirate who inadvertently gets swept into the ancient war between Assassins and Templars. On the hunt for the Observatory – a mythical device capable of tracking anyone in the world using a blood sample – Edward must face the consequences of his greed and chart a path of redemption that will lead him to the Assassins Brotherhood.

COMBAT, PARKOUR & STEALTH RESYNCED

For more info on the Ground Gameplay of Resynced check out our Deep Dive here.

COMBAT

Advanced Combat to Unleash Your Creativity

Resynced’s updated core combat loop is all about breaking an enemies’ defence. While you could certainly try hack and slashing them to death, you’ll quickly find that Edward has an arsenal of tools and moves at his disposal to break defence and get brutal takedowns.

  • Hidden Blade Takedown: Breaking an enemy’s defense with a Perfect Parry will trigger a Hidden Blade takedown.
  • Chain Takedowns: Triggered by timing a Perfect Parry, Edward can chain his takedowns to up to four nearby enemies, depending on the sword he carries.
  • Wall Takedown: Kick an enemy into a wall to initiate a fatal takedown.
  • Ground Takedown: Grounded enemies (from an explosion or Sweep move) can be killed by a Ground Takedown
  • Kick and Sweep: The kick can also stagger enemies and send them back, great for crowd control. The Sweep will allow Edward to perform a Ground Takedown.
  • Rope Dart: Use the Rope Dart to open up enemies for attacks and bring them closer to you. You can use it to interrupt attacks from range as well. To make the Rope Dart a much more strategic item for Edward, he will be able to get his hands on it much earlier (sequence 3 in Resynced vs. sequence 11 in the original).
  • Each of Edward’s main weapons employs a Heavy Attack (by holding down the attack button) which causes more damage and can break defence easier but has a longer wind up time.
    • Rapier: Heavy Strikes are more damaging and can pierce through foes.
    • Cutlass: Heavy Strikes cover a wide area, hitting multiple enemies.
    • Pistol-Sword: Two damaging shots are fired, allowing Edward to focus fire on one enemy or spread the damage on two.

Enemies

Advanced enemy archetypes will require a bit more creativity to take down. To kill an elite enemy like a Brute in a chain takedown, you can use the Quick Shot from Edward’s pistol to break their defence and continue your chain. A quick shot from the pistol instantly breaks the guard of any advanced archetype, opening them up for attacks they would otherwise deny.

The new Demolitionist will launch grenades at Edward, and you can use your rope dart to pull an enemy into the AOE.

Stealth

More freedom to stalk your targets:

  • Edward can now crouch anywhere, which will make him harder to spot. This can be seen with the visibility meter in the HUD. Don’t want to engage in a battle with a Boar or Jaguar? Sneak up them while crouched and perform an assassination.

  • Running straight at an enemy will cause them to hear you, so make sure you are crouched or walking slowly in stealth situations. And if an enemy is alerted by your presence, make sure to take out the Alarm Bells scattered throughout plantations so that they can’t call for backup.

Tools

Edward has a number of tools and methods available for stealth gameplay:

  • The Blowpipe has Sleep Darts (which cause an enemy to sleep for a period of time) and Berserk Darts (which causes enemies to attack each other).
  • Smoke Bombs can be thrown at enemies or dropped at your feet when Edward is in need of a quick escape.
  • The Rope Dart can be used to pull enemies in for an assassination or used to hang enemies from a perch which will serve as a distraction.

Social Stealth

Social stealth returns in Resynced:

  • Hiring NPCs. You can hire the Dancers to distract guards and blend in passively while walking the dense urban environments of the Carribean.
  • You can blend in crowds of 3 or more to remain unseen. Benches, walls, haystacks, and closets are also classic returning hiding spots.
  • Edward will be able to throw money to create chaos and lure guards and citizens to a location.
  • Edward will also be able to toggle his hood on and off at any time.

Parkour

Advanced Parkour Returns:

  • With Advanced Parkour active (you can toggle in Settings) you can parkour down to trigger more precise side-eject behavior, while parkour up prioritizes heigh gains and upward momentum.
  • Manual jump gives you greater control over Edward’s directionality and allowing you to take shortcuts and increase velocity while parkouring.

Manual Jump will offer you more directionality as you scale and traverse Havana’s skyline.

New Ziplines:

  • You’ll encounter these brand new Ziplines throughout the Carribean, connecting Edward from high to low ground over a longer distance, and at a much faster pace.

NAVAL IMPROVEMENTS

For more info on the Naval Gameplay of Resynced check out our Deep Dive here.

New Officer Perks

There are 3 new officers for the Jackdaw that you’ll be able to recruit. Each will provide an essential perk for naval combat.

  • The Padre: The Ram Dash will deal devastating collision damage and features its own dedicated camera. In the original this move was only unlocked after defeating all Legendary Ships, which happened too late to be of much use during the story. The Padre will also join your boarding party when capturing or looting disabled ships.
  • Lucy Baldwin: Perfect Brace will enhance your Brace and almost completely nullify incoming damage – if you time the Brace correctly.
  • Tobias “Deadman” Smith: Deadman’s Cohort will give the mortar a secondary firing option that will saturate an area with a huge number of Carcass bombs. You’ll be able to manually control where each projectile will land, devastating an area with sheer volume. You’ll also be able to fire an additional volley from your broadside cannons with a minimal cooldown between salvos, unleashing devastation on the hapless navies you encounter.

Upgrading & Customizing the Jackdaw

You’ll quickly discover that upgrading the Jackdaw will be essential for surviving and thriving as a pirate of the Carribean. To do so, you’ll have to collect loot and there a number of ways to achieve your aims.

  • Boarding Enemy Ships: while you can simply choose to destroy enemy ships, this will provide significantly less loot than boarding. Disable an enemy ship through battle and board it to collect the most loot. Capturing a ship will also allow you to send it to Kenway’s Fleet (more on that in a bit), repair your ship, lower your Wanted Level or in the case of larger classes of ships like Man O’ Wars, take the Captain’s Lockbox for even more valuable loot.
  • You’ll also be able to find loot through exploration by land and sea. Floating loot will be collectible as you traverse, and make sure to stop by the playas you encounter on your travels. Playas are filled with treasure, especially in underwater chests that you can loot by using the new Dive Anywhere feature, allowing Edward to swim underwater anywhere in the game. Underwater shipwrecks also return, and once you unlock the Diving Bell, you’ll be able to access these shark infested areas to plunder precious treasure.

You’ll also be able to customize the Jackdaw with the cosmetics you earn throughout your adventures.

Kenway’s Fleet

Kenway’s Fleet returns to Resynced and will allow you to assign captured ships to regional missions for passive loot and income. To unlock Kenway’s Fleet in a region, you’ll have to capture that region’s Fort.

Replayable Legendary Ship Battles

The fearsome Legendary Ships return from the original. Defeating them rewards you with unique cosmetics for the Jackdaw, and each will be repayable if you are a masochist who can’t get enough of the challenge.

NEW & EXPANDED CONTENT

For more info on how we expanded on the original Black Flag, check out our Deep Dive here.

The Hideout

The Hideout has been expanded and upgrading it will change and improve life on Great Inagua for both Edward and its residents.

  • For example, the General Store will start out as an abandoned shack, run down and disused. Investing a little money, some crafting materials, and some trade goods will result in it being improved up to three times with a clear visual upgrade. You’ll also get access to rare and legendary weapons, decorations, and outfits for Edward.

The Benefits of Upgrading the Hideout:

  • General Store (three levels) – unlock rare and legendary weapons, decorations, and outfits
  • Tavern – get access to three mini games which Edward can play, and add to the tip jar to increase your chances of finding a Royal Convoy on the open waters
  • Harbormaster (three levels) – increase the number and tier of upgrades you can purchase for the Jackdaw
  • Brothel – dancers become free to hire and a number of combat and sailing benefits are applied to Edward, the Jackdaw, and its crew
  • Campfire – drunk pirates become free to hire and two more slots are added to Edward’s fleet
  • Fisherman’s Wharf (New to Resynced) – increase Hideout passive income over time and double effectiveness of skinning hunted animals
  • Treasure Dealer (New to Resynced) – unlock exclusive items and a map restoration service, increase Hideout profit over time, and unlock a chance for increased profit on fleet trading missions
  • Mansion Façade – increase maximum passive income and a slot in Edward’s fleet
  • Tower and Garden - increase maximum passive income and a slot in Edward’s fleet
  • Guesthouse - increase maximum passive income and a slot in Edward’s fleet

New Missions & Story Content

Resynced brings new narrative content, allowing us to tie some loose ends for Edward and his friends. Of course, if you want to know more about these new questlines, you’ll have to wait for the release. No spoilers to be found here!

  • New Blackbeard & Stede Bonnet Quests
  • New Naval Officer Side Missions
  • New Endgame Chapter “A World Without Gold”
  • Additional Animus Rifts

New and Resynced Content

  • All Legacy Outfits are returning
  • All 35 original shanties return, plus 10 newly produced ones just for Resynced
  • All mini games and activities return from the original
  • Yes...You can have a pet on the Jackdaw

The Power of The Anvil Engine

Lighting is one of those things that really sells a world as believable and realistic, and small differences can really stand out when they’re not quite right. The Caribbean of Resynced features a number of different environments, from dense jungles to urban settlements to the open ocean. Each of those requires a different approach to lighting, and Anvil provides the power needed to make that happen. For example, the original game’s lighting was largely static and baked into the environment, while Resynced introduces dynamic raytraced lighting. But raytracing is very intensive and takes a lot of processing power to achieve. Anvil not only allows for raytracing, but it does so in a package that makes it possible on not just high-end hardware, but the lower specs of some consoles and less advanced PCs.

Dynamic Weather

Rogue waves, waterspouts and lightning will all pose a danger to the Jackdaw while you’re navigating the high seas of the Caribbean.

Atmos returns from AC Shadows, a group of systems which simulate extremely complex and realistic weather. Weather will change dynamically throughout the day, ranging from bright and sweltering sunny days, to light wind and rain, to outright hurricane-like conditions.

CUSTOMIZATION

An example of Minimal HUD settings

Giving you control over your experience

While the HUD is fully customizable, there are a few presets you’ll be able to choose to make things easy for you.

  • Default – Enables most HUD elements to provide maximum clarity. Ideal if you want clear guidance, button prompts, and combat feedback as you explore the game.
  • Simple – A pared‑down HUD that removes some reminders and highlights, while still offering enough feedback to guide you through combat and navigation.
  • Minimal – Displays only essential information, such as Edward’s health, interaction prompts, and cannon aiming arcs while aboard the Jackdaw.
  • Disabled – Removes nearly all HUD elements for a fully immersion‑focused experience. No prompts, no indicators — just your awareness, timing, and the world itself.
  • You can always start with a preset and adjust from there as your comfort level changes.

Granular Customization

Once you get familiar with Resynced’s systems and the timing and feel of gameplay you’ll be able to toggle visual information at will, including Parry VFX & enemy health and defence bars.

Difficulty Settings

You’ll be able to tweak the difficulty settings of the four main pillars of gameplay in Resynced: Combat, Stealth, Naval Combat and Activities.

There are four separate difficulty settings you can tweak to your heart’s desire: combat, naval combat, stealth, and activities. Each is split into three difficulties: Forgiving, Intended, and Hard.

  • The Forgiving setting, generally, is for story-focused players or players who have not yet mastered the mechanics of a particular activity.
  • Intended is the default and it closely mimics the experience of the original Black Flag, providing a balance between the two other settings and is most suitable for players familiar with action-adventure games.
  • Hard is for those who want a challenge and to test themselves against everything the game can throw at them.

Well that’s it for now, we hope you enjoyed reading this, and we can’t wait for you to get your hands on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, available July 9th.

To activate the new Projects, complete Anomalies and progress through the rewards like previously released ones. These include rewards for both Shadows and Black Flag Resynced and can be progressed by completing Anomalies from both games.

MOD, an Assassin hacker, has created a new type of simulation called “Domains.” These trials are designed to help the Dark Animus users sharpen their combat and survival skills. Those who can rise to the challenge can earn dozens of new and remixed outfits, weapons, trinkets and engravings.

The higher the difficulty, the more gameplay modifiers will be applied. The goal is to push you out of your comfort zone and make you rethink your loadouts. A strategy that works in one Domain may not in the next. “Time to get those Mythic and Artifact upgrades you’ve been putting off!”

MOD has an exclusive shop and in-game currency you can use to purchase new end-game gear sets, new powerful engravings, and a progression tree to support the Domain’s increasing challenges. As you push through higher difficulties, MOD will reward you with weapons and armors that longtime Animus users may recognize.

And you will need it all if you want to beat the hardest challenge levels (and get the secret rewards along the way!)

Note: None of these items will ever be in the store or the exchange. These are Domain-exclusive, for bragging rights only!

Assassin's Creed Flack Flag Resynced - Deep Dive 3: Expanding on the Original

https://preview.redd.it/zug9ddex5v6h1.jpg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d0ab55094c44fb4963803878afeed563dfe7a647

Hello everyone!

We’re back with another Deep Dive article. This time, we’ll be showcasing some of the ways that we expanded on the original Black Flag in Resynced. From new missions and content and to updated environment layouts and level design, the team updated multiple elements while staying true to the core of the original game.

This time we’re joined by Creative Director Paul Fu and Game Director Richard Knight.

Please note that all footage is from a work-in-progress build. Make sure to watch in 4K for the best quality. HUD settings may vary depending on the capture to showcase examples of customizable options.

New Missions

New endgame chapter: “A World Without Gold”

If you’ve played the original Black Flag, then the character of Blackbeard is likely burned into your brain like the fuses he wore in his hat. With a new set of eight additional missions, you’ll experience Blackbeard’s expanded story which unlocks at the start of the final sequence in the game – look out for the quest in the Hideout. You’ll have to play the game to find out what’s in store for you and how the tale of Blackbeard unfolds.

Officer Side Missions

In our previous deep dive on naval gameplay (check it out here in case you missed it), we outlined the three new officers for the Jackdaw and the benefits of each. Not only does each come with a questline you can follow to discover their stories in the Caribbean, but the perks they provide midway through their questlines unlock a gameplay perk for the Jackdaw.

Unlocked once you reach Great Inagua, Adéwalé will inform Edward of two potential recruits known as Lucy and the Padre, while the final officer known as Tobias “Deadman” Smith can be recruited through the “A World Without Gold” questline mentioned above. Lucy can be found at Salt Key Bank, imprisoned aboard a Man-o-War. Edward will have to sneak aboard to free her and add her to his crew. Meanwhile, the Padre can be found in Punta del Caracol; a holy man with a checkered past now serving a small village. Edward will need to aid him and convince him to return to a life of piracy. Below is some new gameplay footage from the Padre’s questline.

You won’t have to fully finish each Officer’s questline to unlock them and bring them along as part of your crew, but if you want to learn more about them and their motivations for joining you, you can conclude their stories with the remaining missions.

Other Side Missions

New Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet Quests

Starting in sequence 8, a new treasure quest sees Edward sent on a hunt by Blackbeard to not only uncover loot, but cement Blackbeard’s reputation as a builder of a free society. You’ll have to play to discover more and uncover the twist yourself, but check out the “Health to the Company” cinematic trailer we shared recently for a taste of what’s to come.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: Health to the Company - Cinematic

https://preview.redd.it/i0zgd1re6v6h1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=fedce9d00817c90a5b913e3f7a5ed19e60027a54

Stede Bonnet is another beloved icon of the pirate age, and we wanted to expand his role a little in Resynced to honor the legacy of this unlikely gentleman pirate. Stede’s story is, by now, well known amongst many, and we wanted to give him a more satisfying conclusion, so we’ve added a new mission and a fitting epilogue to his tale. You will receive a letter from Stede asking Edward to meet with him on Mystery Island, where you’ll be able to uncover what happened to the legendary gentleman. This quest unlocks when you start Sequence 9, and the additional quests can be found in your hideout or appear on the map once available.

“Coming back to the Caribbean gave us some opportunities to address some hanging threads from the original game,” said Richard Knight. “In the years since, players have been wondering what happened to Blackbeard and Stede, and we’ve seen Stede featured in a number of very cool movies and shows, so people know even more about his interesting life. We wanted to give both characters a proper send-off and to tie a bow on this Bonnet.”

Additional Animus rifts

While Resynced’s focus is on the tale of Edward Kenway, there are four optional rifts which each relate to some of the key characters in the game, such as Edward, Blackbeard, and James Kidd. These will conclude… Well, you’ll have to discover the conclusion for yourself by seeking them out.

Revisiting Mission Structure and Layouts

Layouts and Structure

Mission structure in general has been tweaked to both provide you with more options to complete your objectives and refresh the experience to match some of the updates made to systems like parkour.

“Each quest in the game was built from scratch,” says Paul Fu. “The directors all did full playthroughs of the original and made notes as they went to point out areas of the game that were the most confusing, the things that didn’t make sense anymore in a modern game, and what could be improved. The result was a lot of changes – sometimes small and sometimes large – to the level and mission design.”

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced - Deep Dive Gameplay: Updated Mission Design: Diving

https://preview.redd.it/z789tk3s6v6h1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=b46591536b234fba4d2d77e4f99fba9ea566443c

The biggest changes are clear right from the first mission. We adjusted some details of parkour paths, scripted events, collectibles, and sometimes even the layout itself. The goal here was to make traversal more intuitive and coherent, while also maintaining believability and honoring the spirit of the original game. The cities and locations all still follow the same general layout as they did before, but the details have been reworked and revisited to match the modern parkour mechanics. Some missions and objectives have also been updated for a better experience. For example, some tailing objectives have been replaced with investigations or new stealth objectives to increase the variety of activities and better fit the story. Changes like this have been made across the map, so even if you know the original like the back of your hand, you’ll have plenty of new parkour routes to explore and exploit with the new mechanics.

"Many Assassination missions have also been expanded with optional objectives and secrets,” says Paul. “We wanted to expand on the lore of the assassination targets without violating the original narrative. For example, in one particular mid-game assassination, you can find a target’s room (with a hidden reward) by eavesdropping on some soldiers.”

Another change we’ve made is when you unlock the Rope Dart tool. Previously, it was an item unlocked a little later in the game, but in Resynced you’ll get access to it in Sequence 3, giving you a lot more options throughout the game when dealing with enemies both for stealth and distraction, as well as a tool that holds its own in melee combat.

Tailing Missions

You’re tailing someone, eavesdropping on their conversation to get the info you need to complete your task. Maybe you get ahead of yourself or lose concentration and get caught. In the original Black Flag, this meant a desynchronization, and we felt your frustrations as well. In Resynced, we’ve modified things so that failing an eavesdropping or tailing mission will no longer result in starting over, and there will be multiple paths to gain the information you need. If you’re caught early or lose sight of your target for too long, your objective will switch and may require you, for example, to enter combat and locate a note on a defeated enemy, chase down your target and take them out, or continue investigating in a different location. This gives you far more optionality in how you approach tailing and eavesdropping missions. In the following clip, we will take out a captain who you're tailing in a sequence in Havana: a move that would have resulted in a desynchronization in the original Black Flag.

How have Templar Hunts, Assassins Contracts, and Naval Contracts changed?

Templar Hunts from the original game have been reworked to meet the standards of modern parkour and provide a commensurate challenge, while also updating the narrative a little to fit better into the updated experience. You can still expect to unlock the same rewards for your hard work by using the five keys on the locked gate in the Hideout.

Assassin Contracts return and can be picked up in major settlements at pigeon coops. We’ve remixed these a little to distribute them a more evenly across the map and rebalance them, while also fleshing out the character contracts with additional dialogue and deeper motivations, and reworking their introductions to weave them more seamlessly into the narrative. Rewards for naval and assassination contracts have also been updated, including some new items that weren’t available in the original game.

Skip time feature

Whether you want to complete a quest in the cover of night or get that perfect sunrise picture on the beach, the new Skip Time feature has been added for your convenience. All you need to do is hold down the Skip Time button when outside of combat to cycle from day to night – or vice-versa – giving you a little more control over the environment and how you take on missions.

The Hideout and Other Locations

The Hideout

Every rogue needs a hideout, and Edward is no different. As you progress through the game, you will unlock a Hideout on Great Inagua. The isle features a small village and a villa on the hill overlooking it where you’ll house your collection of treasures, be able to manage your fleet of captured ships, access new side missions, and even collect a regular income from the residents of the island.

In Resynced, we wanted to bring the Hideout to life and add a sense of progression to match Edward’s own changing fortunes. Now you’ll find a variety of buildings in the village below which you can unlock and upgrade, which will not only change how they look, but also confer a number of benefits. For example, the General Store will start out as an abandoned shack, run down and disused. Investing a little money, some crafting materials, and some trade goods will result in it being improved up to three times with a clear visual upgrade. You’ll also get access to rare and legendary weapons, decorations, and outfits for Edward.

Fair warning, if you’d like to discover these on your own, this is your cue to close the article. Here’s a list of all the buildings and some of the benefits you’ll receive for investing in them:

Aside from the benefits you’ll unlock, you’ll also start to notice the village becoming busier and more full of life, with bustling streets and activity everywhere you look! Be sure to spare some of your riches and share the benefits with the villagers.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced - Deep Dive Gameplay: Exploring the Hideout

https://preview.redd.it/67ynw40u8v6h1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=4d63e3004b05bdf0f0421c50a9dd29cb71ddda53

Milo van der Graaff

You’ll also find the dubious Milo van der Graaff has made his return to hand out naval contracts, but this time you’ll meet and talk to him in the flesh. The owner of a trading company with a less-than-honorable reputation, van der Graaff can be found at the Hideout while his employees – who also offer his contracts – can be found throughout the Caribbean to offer Edward dishonest work for dishonest pay. Milo will offer a mix of naval combat missions and assassination contracts, and his story has been developed to give you a little more information on this “honest businessman.”

“Milo existed in the original, but you would only see his name mentioned in letters,” says Paul. “We decided to physically add Milo to Great Inagua early on in conception, to give this ostentatious man a presence in the game.”

Bernard Woodhouse the Butler

Great Inagua’s villa also boasts a new character – Bernard Woodhouse. Bernard is introduced briefly in the main story when Edward takes over the Hideout and is Great Inagua’s caretaker and the villa’s butler. Underneath his prim and proper exterior, Bernard houses quite a few secrets. As you collect relics and art (both familiar and new) for the villa, you can expect to unlock more story elements about Bernard’s life and the villa mysteries.

“We knew that many completionist fans would come back to the Caribbean looking for new things to collect and do,” says Paul. “Woodhouse was added to provide narrative to the collection quests in the Hideout. Along with Woodhouse comes new paintings for the player to collect. For example, players can find paintings of Edward’s friends – and targets – in the open world.”

Playas and treasure hunting

Playas (small islands which can be explored for rewards) previously had only one or two chests. We wanted to add a little more value and incentive for players to explore and feel connected to the world. Along with increasing the number of rewards, we’ve added some unique treasure to some of these locations – keep an eye out for the Guardian Beast Trinket on Dry Tortuga, for example – as well as Animus Keys which will unlock, amongst other things, some cool outfits for Edward, weapons, and ship vanities.

You might also find some locations which add a little color and narrative to the world of the Caribbean with unique encounters or vault entries which give deeper insight into what’s going on in the modern day. To encounter them all and become a true master of the Caribbean seas, you’ll have to sail far and wide to explore each location thoroughly.

New local events in the world

Speaking of which, local events are small narrative moments or extra flavor that we’ve added to the world. These could be small voice lines added to Edward or other NPCs or characters that comment on letters received or events in the world, additional animations to react to things that happen to and around Edward, or extra lines from NPCs that might give you hints and clues to the story or little rewards you can uncover. For example, each plantation now features small extra narratives that are tied to locating the key necessary to open their warehouses. In one, a pet crocodile named Lucia might get in the way of easy retrieval of the key, and in another a forbidden love story unfolds between a British officer and the Lady of the house. Be sure to visit each of the plantations, not just for some rewards at the end, but to discover what other tales await you!

“These small moments add a little color to the world,” says Knight. “They’re not intrusive or constantly telling you what to do next, they just bring Edward and the people who inhabit the Caribbean to life a little more and make the world feel more immersive. And if you keep your ears open, you might just get a hint as to where you can find one of the new shanties we added…”

Difficulty Settings and Gameplay Impact

For Resynced, we’ve updated the experience so you can meet the challenges Edward faces on his journey in a way that suits you.

“We want to give players more choices,” says Paul Fu. “If you’re a sword combat expert but have the subtlety of a broadside canon, maybe you want to up the combat difficulty but lower the stealth difficulty. It means the challenges can meet you where you are instead of having these huge difficulty spikes every time you have to engage in a certain type of activity.”

Difficulty Settings Screenshot

You can change these on the fly, so if you find a specific section of the game too challenging, you can edit them mid-game and put them back when you overcome it. Each has a variety of effects on gameplay, so let’s take a look.

Combat Difficulty

Changing the difficulty here will affect melee combat outside of stealth, so when Edward is on dry land, in a fort, or raiding the deck of an enemy ship. The number of enemies who will actively attack Edward when he’s surrounded, the frequency of those attacks, and the amount of damage Edward’s own attacks do will all be affected by this setting.

Stealth Difficulty

This setting takes effect when Edward is keeping a low profile, skulking across rooftops or between blades of tall grass. Changing this setting affects the distance at which he’ll be spotted by enemies, the amount of time it takes for them to detect him while he’s still somewhat hidden or far enough away, how long enemies will hunt for Edward when they become alerted or suspicious, and which state they will enter upon witnessing certain higher profile acts.

Naval Combat Difficulty

Combat while piloting the Jackdaw will see a number of changes based on your difficulty choice. The Jackdaw itself will be affected by the amount of damage that is dealt against enemies, how much effect bracing has against incoming damage, or whether damage will automatically be repaired outside of combat. Meanwhile, enemy ships will also do different levels of damage and have the cooldown of their ram ability affected. Hostile forts will also deal varying levels of damage and cooldowns will differ based on your choices.

Activity Difficulty

Lastly, activities refers to exploring shipwrecks and hunting with the harpoon. Creatures you meet while diving will do different amounts of damage, spawn more or less frequently, and Edward will have more or less time to dodge incoming attacks. Similarly, this setting will affect the damage Edward does to his prey, incoming damage he receives, and even Edward’s ability to interrupt incoming attacks will be affected, with the Hard difficulty requiring a perfect attack to prevent them.

So, whether you want to push your limits or just see what happens next in Edward’s tale, try playing with these settings and finding the ones that fit you best.

And that’s it for this deep dive! It’s just a glimpse at some of the ways we expanded on the original Black Flag, so make sure to check out our deep dives into parkour, stealth, combat, and naval gameplay to learn more about the host of new features, missions, mechanics, and more. Keep an eye out for more deep dives and reveals all the way up to Resynced’s launch on July 9.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced - Deep Dive into the Naval Gameplay

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced - Deep Dive into the Naval Gameplay

Hello everyone!

We're back with another Deep Dive into a core aspect of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced: Naval Gameplay.

This time we're joined by Guilhem Marin, the lead Naval Designer to go in depth on Resynced’s naval gameplay.

Please note that all footage is from a work-in-progress build. Make sure to watch in 4K for the best quality. HUD settings may vary depending on the capture to showcase examples of customizable options.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced - Deep Dive Gameplay: Diving Off the Jackdaw

https://preview.redd.it/uzl6607ieh3h1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=4921fe978b4083d624db6a46545562def938e91a

Navigation and Exploration on the High Seas

The Jackdaw is a character in its own right and will accompany Edward and his crew on their journey throughout the Caribbean. It’s still the ship you know and love, but with some upgrades to improve your experience and create a more seamless, immersive sailing experience.

Autopilot and Getting Around the Map

A benefit of the latest generation of hardware has been the ability to create seamless open worlds with no loading screens. As such, Resynced has upgraded to modern hardware, allowing us to remove loading screens between naval gameplay and the major cities of the game.

You'll also be able to take advantage of two new navigation tools to help you get around the Caribbean. First is the Pathfinder; pin a destination on your map and activate it, which highlights your route across the water; handy if you want to stay in control of the Jackdaw while keeping your heading in view. Second is Follow Sea. This is a fancy term for autopilot; once your path is set, switch it on to hand navigation over entirely, letting the ship steer herself until you reach your destination.

Sea Shanties

Whether you use the new navigation tools, or simply decide to set sail with no destination, the iconic shanties from the original are back to accompany Edward’s journey. All 35 original shanties are here to find through exploration, plus 10 newly produced ones just for Resynced that are now tied to specific quests and activities.

In Resynced, you can now choose a specific shanty you want to hear with a brand-new shanty wheel, accessible by pressing D pad down (if you’d prefer to cycle through randomly, you can still choose a random shanty by pressing D pad right). Of course, if you want a quiet moment to simply enjoy the sound of the waves, you’ll also be able to turn off spontaneous singing by holding down D pad right.

Forts and New Regions in Assassin’s Creed Resynced

Each region of the map houses one Fort, with difficulty varying by region. You’ll be able to initiate combat with Forts, usually tough battles which also alert nearby enemy ships. After naval combat, you’ll have to deboard your ship with your crew and face the hordes of enemy soldiers on land, lowering morale enough to face off against the fort’s commander and kill him to claim it as your own. Destroying a Fort highlights new points of interest in its region and opens additional missions for Kenway's Fleet (more on that later).

Instead of fixed objectives, we now use a dynamic morale system that ensures that all your actions matter. Once you’ve lowered morale sufficiently, the commander will stand up and fight instead of trying to surrender like in the original game.

Dynamic Weather in Assassin’s Creed Resynced

Using the Anvil Engine’s dynamic weather system, called Atmos, the Caribbean Sea is truer to life than ever. Through rogue winds and waves, violent storms, and placid sun, your journey throughout the world will be colored by weather systems that simulate the water cycle, realistically blow the billowing cloth of sails and move or even destroy objects in the world.

In Resynced, you’ll need to be extra cautious in bad weather, as there are now two waterspout types, while lightning strikes can fall into the water to do AoE damage.

“One of the key pillars we discussed with our Tech and Realization teams was to convey the awe-inspiring power of nature,” says Guilhem. “We really cranked up the gameplay of the elements to convey that, despite all of its firepower and tools, the Jackdaw has to respect the fury of the sea or face oblivion.”

Aquatic Activities at Sea

The sea presents many opportunities for adventure outside of the main quests.

Loot and where to find it Loot is a key resource on the high seas, providing useful materials for Ship Upgrades for the Jackdaw. You can collect loot by:

  • Destroying or boarding enemy ships
  • Collect floating loot as you traverse
  • Finding underwater chests with the diving bell or the new free dive feature
  • Harpooning sea creatures
  • Taking out Forts
  • Finding burning ships.

To get the most out of your efforts, boarding enemy ships will net Edward the most loot – double what you’d get by simply destroying them – and you can use your Spyglass to see what materials the ship has on board, ensuring your plunder is exactly what you need for your next upgrade.

Diving and Hunting side Activities

Black Flag’s naval side activities return in Resynced.

  • Diving: Once the Diving Bell is unlocked through the main story, you’ll be able to use it to access diverse and dangerous underwater areas that contain much rarer loot. Edward will have to navigate the threats of stinging jellyfish and stalking sharks, fast moving currents in caves, all while watching his oxygen. Edward will be able to blend stealthily in schools of fish to avoid the watchful eyes of the lurking sharks.

  • Dive Anywhere: You can now dive under the waves whenever and wherever you like, even without access to the diving bell. This mechanic will allow Edward to find hidden chests of loot submerged near isolated island playas or approach ships and shorefront targets in total stealth beneath the waves. Diving Bell locations are still too deep to brave the depths without the Diving Bell, making it a critical apparatus for rarer loot.

  • Harpooning: Harpooning makes a return in Resynced. When you spot a location where a whale or shark can be found, Edward will step aboard on a small boat. Harpooning acts as a sort of mini game where you'll have to use finite harpoons and steady aim to kill or become prey. Successfully harpooning a whale or shark will reward Edward with some high-value resources you can sell off at the next port or use for crafting upgrades.

The Role of the Captain’s Cabin

The Captain's Cabin is a special location on The Jackdaw, and you can access it any time you’re not piloting the ship.

From the Captain’s Cabin, you can:

  • Customize your ship’s appearance like the sails or figurehead.
  • Customize the appearance of Edward with his variety of outfits coming back from the original game (you’ll also be able to do this outside of the Captain’s Cabin)
  • Change your ship’s pet
  • Manage your fleet – send your fleet of vessels out on missions to gather resources, trade your loot, or fight enemy ships

Some functions previously tied to the Captain’s Cabin, such as purchasing ship upgrades, restocking ship’s weapons, and buying and selling cargo, have now been moved to the local Harbourmaster – found in a variety of ports throughout the Caribbean. This means that you’ll need to manage your resources while out on the open ocean and make more strategic decisions and about when and who you engage so you don’t enter a fight unprepared.

Kenway’s Fleet

Captured ships become valuable rewards for Edward and will be added to Kenway’s Fleet – a naval minigame returning in Resynced. Every ship added to your fleet can be assigned to missions, generating passive income, trade goods, and rare activity spawns, even while you're busy elsewhere on the map.

You can assign one ship to each mission, if you have enough docked to do so. You'll start with a limited number of Fleet slots, but this number increases as you progress through the game. Building a varied fleet is essential, as different mission types require specific ship classes to succeed. As they say, don't bring a Schooner to a Man-o-War fight.

Note that while in the original game, the Kenway’s Fleet was tied to a companion app; it is now fully integrated to Black Flag Resynced.

Capturing ships happens naturally as the Jackdaw sails the open seas. After defeating an enemy vessel, you can choose to use it for repairs, lower your Wanted Level, or add it to an empty fleet slot. Choose wisely, though: send an underpowered ship on the wrong mission and it may be destroyed. Keeping your fleet repaired between missions is just as important as expanding it.

Combat on The Jackdaw

Edward Kenway is – first and foremost – a pirate, and captaining the Jackdaw is at the center of Black Flag Resynced.

Weapons and Battle

Throughout your journey, you’ll spot a number of ships from different naval factions and of different classes, and all of them have a pretty penny or two on board for the taking. But to get at that loot, you’ll have to take them down first using The Jackdaw’s varied arsenal.

The Jackdaw’s Arsenal

The Jackdaw is more than a ship – it’s a trusted friend and brother-in-arms. Outfitted with an arsenal to see you through the toughest battles, we’ve added and improved a few things to make it able to take down whatever enemies you encounter.

To start with, all weapons on The Jackdaw now have a secondary firing mode, akin to a new ammo type, that you can swap to at any time while aiming. This gives you greater flexibility in combat, and adds new gameplay options. You’ll need to find and acquire these new firing modes around the Caribbean. Here are some other updates:

  • The Ram Dash - This turns the bow of The Jackdaw into a brutal weapon as it surges forward to deal devastating collision damage. In the original game, this move was unlocked after defeating all four Legendary Ships. While a noteworthy reward for such an achievement, it happened too late in the game to be much use during the story. This ability can now be unlocked through the Padre (more on him later) even earlier in the game, and we’ve improved it with increased damage and a dedicated camera.
  • Deadman's Cohort – The regular mortar will be upgraded with the Deadman’s Cohort during your playthrough thanks to the new officer Deadman Smith. This new mortar keeps the original firing mode, but also gains a secondary firing option that saturates an area with a huge number of Carcass bombs. While each individual bomb does little damage on its own, you can manually control where each projectile will land as it fires, devastating an area with sheer volume.
  • Bow Chaser Cannons – In addition to the original chain shots, we are now adding a double shot as a secondary firing mode, dealing a powerful volley of cannonballs from the front of your ship and dealing heavy damage while chasing prey.
  • Broadside Cannons – On top of flexible round shot and the short range heavy shot, we are adding heated shots to the Jackdaw’s arsenal. Heated shot ammunition fires multiple volleys of fiery projectiles in quick succession, dealing high damage to a target should you manage to land them all.
  • Shrapnel Barrels – The new firing mode launches shrapnel barrels from the stern of the ship. As the name implies, they propel shrapnel upwards to shred enemy sails on explosion, providing a viable tool to escape when being chased. Also, all barrels now have increased area of effect to make them easier to use.

The Wanted System in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced

Returning is the Wanted System when sailing, which adds consequences for your actions and a level of strategy to naval gameplay. Get in a few too many fights and you’ll see your wanted bar grow, which in turn causes Pirate Hunters to tail you, with more powerful ships chasing you as your level gets higher. While you might be able to avoid them with enough speed and agility, they will continue to hunt you down as you sail the seas. Reduce your Wanted Level by taking out enemy or merchant ships, boarding them, and choosing to lower your notoriety, or visiting an Officer at a port and bribing them to get the authorities off your back.

The Benefits of Boarding Ships After Battle

After combat, you’ll have two options available with a disabled ship. If you’re in a hurry, sink it immediately, but if you have the time to earn extra loot, come in close for a boarding party and increase your spoils. The goal here is to take out remaining members of the crew and lower their morale through combat or cutting down the ship’s flags until they surrender. Once you have control of the ship, you’ll have a few options available to you:

  • Repairing the Jackdaw will use the ship’s resources to round up your ship’s health back to the nearest health bar segment, which can be useful when far from a port or when exploring new areas.
  • Lowering your wanted level can keep Pirate Hunters off your tail and extend the time you have to sail free and unimpeded.
  • As mentioned earlier, adding the ship to your fleet increases the number and type of missions you can send your ships on for additional passive rewards.
  • Grab the Captains Lockbox! Previously after a successful boarding, you had a choice of adding a ship to Kenway’s Fleet, repairing the Jackdaw, or lowering your Wanted Level. The Captain’s Lockbox will be a fourth option offering more reales – though only available on larger classes of ships like frigates or Man O’ Wars.

While boarding certainly grants more loot than simply sinking a ship, the battle that ensues will have an impact on your crew numbers, and you’ll need to be sure to replace them. You’ll be able to recruit new crew members at taverns, by rescuing pirates held hostage on land, or by finding castaways adrift on the ocean.

Ship upgrades and resources in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Explained

Sailing the seas of the Caribbean is a dangerous proposition, and upgrading the Jackdaw will be essential for taking on – and surviving – the most fearsome and legendary ships that Edward will encounter.

Each enemy ship is full of resources for Edward to plunder, and the higher the ship’s level, the more booty can be looted and used to upgrade The Jackdaw. Once resources are collected, Edward can talk to the Harbormaster in various locations to purchase upgrades which will increase the damage from weapons, bolster defense against other ships, increase weapon numbers, and more.

Officer Recruitment and The Jackdaw’s Crew

New to Resynced, Edward will be able to recruit and assign Officers to the Jackdaw, each of whom will provide specific perks. Officers will automatically be assigned to the crew and equipped once recruited, and their perks will be permanently unlocked. To recruit each unique Officer, you will have to find them in the open world and complete their quest before they agree to join your crew and bestow their powerful perks upon your ship:

  • Lucy Baldwin: A Shipwright of legendary status, she unlocks Perfect Brace – a mechanic to enhance your Brace and almost completely nullify incoming damage – if you time the Brace correctly.
  • The Padre: A Master-at-Arms turned priest returning to his roots, the Padre will join your boarding parties when capturing or looting disabled ships. He’s a tough fighter, and definitely someone you want on your side in a fight. He also unlocks the Ram Dash ability, allowing you to ram ships at even higher speed.
  • Tobias “Deadman” Smith: A Master Gunner, Deadman grants you the ability to fire an additional volley from your broadsides with minimal cooldown between salvos. Available in aimed mode, it adds an extra edge and increases your overall damage over time.

How do naval factions interact with each other in Assassin’s Creed Resynced?

Each faction you meet on the open seas has alliances and enemies, just like Edward. You will often encounter ships locked in battle, whether it’s the British against the Spanish or a fellow pirate attacking a merchant. These alliances will affect how the ships react when they meet on the water and if they simply pass each other by or engage, opening up potential opportunities for you to wait until the smoke clears to deliver the decisive blow against an already-weakened ship, or join an ally to outnumber an enemy.

Legendary Ships

Legendary ships return as a set of high-difficulty endgame encounters. They’re designed to test the full extent of the Jackdaw’s upgrades and your skill, and as such are the ultimate challenge in naval combat.

What makes Legendary Ships different?

Each Legendary Ship encounter offers a unique and self-contained experience beyond any naval challenge you’ve faced up to this point. Battles feature a distinct enemy vessel which you will need to fight using tactics, skill, and planning.

Defeating a Legendary Ship rewards you with unique cosmetic skins for The Jackdaw, for the figurehead, hull, wheel, and sails. These serve as permanent proof of your prowess in battle and are exclusive to each encounter. You’ll find four challenging encounters in your travels across the Caribbean:

  • El Impoluto
  • HMS Fearless & Royal Sovereign (The Twins)
  • La Dama Negra
  • HMS Prince

“Legendary ships are the ultimate challenge one may experience in Naval combat,” says Guilhem. “Do not face them unprepared, for they require complete mastery of all the Jackdaw’s tools. Even if you defeated them in the original, do not underestimate them, for we rebuilt them to be stronger, tougher, and meaner. If you survive, you’ll get cosmetic skins for the Jackdaw to brag about your skill. Oh, and by the way, they respawn after a while.”

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Accessibility Spotlight

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is set to launch on July 9 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via the Ubisoft Store, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. A renewed and enhanced experience, the game invites players back into the adventure of Edward Kenway as he sails the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy. Among the enhancements from the original Assassin’s Creed Black Flag are improved and new accessibility features to make the game playable for as many people as possible.

We spoke with Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced’s Director of User Experience Jonathan Bedard and Game Designer Maksym Smolynets about their approach to accessibility in the game, accessibility innovations in the past decade, and what new features they’re most proud of.

https://preview.redd.it/qiet8o94nxzg1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=4fc639605547586844dd4e35dd58b1c5b0a119f2

What was your approach to accessibility in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced?

Jonathan Bedard: For us, the approach was really about bringing a beloved classic, one enjoyed by millions, up to today’s Ubisoft standards, which have been shaped and refined over many years by our teams and our games.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag remains one of the most appreciated entries in the franchise, so it was important to be respectful of the original game's intentions.

Maksym Smolynets: It was also very important for us to stay closely connected to our community, to understand how players welcomed the accessibility improvements introduced in our more recent titles, and where they felt the experience could be pushed further.

We kept an eye on what was being done on other Ubisoft projects, as well as in the industry, learning from it and sharing approaches. That cross‑team inspiration helped us improve the game and how players can interact with it.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is over a decade old. How has accessibility in games evolved since its release?

JB: The accessibility space has been shaped by many inspiring people and teams who have done tremendous work since Black Flag’s original release. They built the foundation on which we stand today. Many features that were once considered exceptional or optional have since become best practices.

As developers, we’ve continuously pushed each other—both within Ubisoft and across the wider industry—in a spirit of friendly competition that ultimately benefits everyone, and most importantly, the players. While it was not possible to carry everything from recent titles to the game, it comes with a lot of expected improvements you could expect from a Ubisoft title in 2026.

What new accessibility features are in Resynced?

MS: Players will find many refinements and additions to core features.
Much like with the rest of the remake, our focus was first on expanding and improving existing functionality rather than introducing entirely new systems.

Among the additions, we included a persistent, customizable camera dot at the center of the screen to help alleviate motion sickness. It’s a relatively minor feature, but it was widely requested and meaningful for many players.

Does the nature of Resynced being a remake create any challenges in adding accessibility features? How does it differ from creating accessibility features in a new IP?

JB: While the original game was not created with today’s accessibility standards in mind, the way we make games now allows us to build on it more effectively. Our modern pipelines and processes made it possible to improve the experience by integrating many of our recent developments. This is one huge way in which our constant investments in Accessibility over the last few years paid off.

Systems like control remapping, color‑blind options, subtitles, and similar features were easier to bring up to standard because they were developed with long‑term scalability and reuse in mind.

https://preview.redd.it/i95xyoz6nxzg1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=1c13acc9066bf5ff0f097fcc9f962afffff1b878

MS: For Resynced, our goal was to further improve the quality and customization of our features, settings and options.

We had a very solid framework based on iterations and improvements made across recent releases. Ubisoft Kyiv in particular has strong experience designing and delivering accessibility features for Assassin’s Creed and many other Ubisoft titles.

What new accessibility features are you particularly proud of?

MS: I would answer with not a single feature, but instead the breadth of the improvements. Firstly, in addition to bringing across a wide range of features from recent Assassin’s Creed titles, we were able to improve on them. subtitles are larger and clearer, colorblind options now modify important color‑coded visual effects like attacks and intuition highlights, and control customization is more intuitive, with more input options available.

The Audio Glossary has been expanded, HUD customization is deeper, and narration now supports more elements, and its speed can be increased further. We were able to bring ship fast travel from Odyssey, an upgraded Observe from Shadows, the highly motor-accessible map system from Shadows but adapted for tracking quests and quickly jumping around the map.

We also have a range of accessibility considerations that are unique to this game. From actions at sea like docking and looting requiring less precision and visual perception through to more flexible stalk/chase missions and the ability to tone down the intensity of underwater sections, either partially through in-game items or more substantially through settings to turn off both oxygen limits and shark attacks.

These are just a few examples. Together, the changes make the experience more comfortable and readable for a much wider range of players.

JB: I'll cheat a little too and say all of it! I’m proud that we can bring back one of my favorite games for both new players and longtime fans, while aligning it more closely with today's accessibility standards.

This allows more players to discover—or rediscover—this timeless classic, including some who might have felt the original was not accessible enough for them to fully enjoy. It’s a reflection, and a testament of the efforts made across the industry in general, and some for our teams in particular.

It’s a first for us, compared to the original Black Flag this is the most substantial accessibility upgrade that a Ubisoft game has ever had.

https://preview.redd.it/iq5hb9y9nxzg1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=ab1666b05e30076ebcb70ecb72c47964a14ab488

  • Camera sway during naval gameplay in the original has been removed by default.
  • Toggable camera dot - a permanent dot in the center of the screen, on top of other reticles and HUD elements. Size and color can be customized.
  • Configurable FOV angle (PC only, for performance reasons)
  • Eagle vision provides temporary higher contrast between important elements, and between them and the background.

MENUS & HUD

  • Clear menu text by default, in clear sans serif font on plain well contrasted backgrounds.
  • Screen narration within both menus and game, for all information that is delivered through text. Including some gameplay information such as coordinates, locations, and ship info panels. Choice of two voices, and adjustable speed.

Hello everyone!

We know you’ve been anticipating Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, and we’re delighted to share more information on key gameplay topics through a series of deep dive articles over the next several weeks, starting with the evolution of Edward’s ground gameplay.

We’re joined by Paul Fu, Creative Director and veteran developer of the original Black Flag, to provide additional insights.

Parkour, Stealth, and Combat in Resynced have all been rebuilt from the ground up using the latest advancements across the franchise, including some of the Anvil engine technology developed for Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

“Our goal was to honor the foundations of the original game while enhancing the experience for an action-adventure game,” says Paul.

So, let’s step out of the Jackdaw for now, and look at how our famous Pirate-Assassin, Edward James Kenway, moves and engages on the ground in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced.

Please note that all footage is from a work-in-progress build. Make sure to watch in 4K for the best quality. HUD settings may vary depending on the capture to showcase examples of customizable options. And in case you’re wondering, all HUD elements can be individually hidden as desired using the Interface customization menu. You can even play with nothing activated, if you dare...

Parkour & Core movement

Parkour remains at the heart of what it means to be an Assassin, and even a pirate like Edward is no exception to that.

Core Movements

Our intention was to keep Edward’s responsive movement from the original and make it snappier and more deliberate. Whether you’re jumping across the colorful rooftops of Havana, the wild and untamed jungles, or the raw scaffolds of Nassau, parkour has been tuned to prioritize responsiveness and player choice.

“One thing that we worked on a lot and iterated with feedback we received early on from community members during playtests was to nail the responsiveness and pace of Edward.” says Paul.

A variety of steps were taken to make it work:

Throughout development, the landing animations were refined, so that Edward recovers more quickly from a drop. This removes any sense of stumbling or heaviness and keeps movement feeling smooth and continuous. Jumping from one spot to the other is also more responsive; we know keeping a sense of flow is what makes a parkour run most rewarding.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced - Deep Dive Gameplay: Core Parkour Movements

https://preview.redd.it/awe6ehd8aczg1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=5333186b2fe6406473ef3343c67d10fda44de4eb

We also made subtle changes to heighten this sense of fluidity; for example, when mantling after a wall run, Edward will have a short speed boost that allows him to keep the pace of his run despite slightly recovering. You can also roll upon hitting the ground to maintain a sprinting pace – which ends up being very useful during chase missions.

Of course, that smoothness is supported by the depth of design and the tools available for you to leverage.

In cities, familiar features like the corner swing and lifts return. We’ve also included brand new Ziplines scattered across the cities that Edward will visit, connecting you from high to low ground over a longer distance, and at a much faster pace.

The Caribbean landscape that Edward has to contend with is very different to that of his predecessors, and the wild untamed jungles encountered while island hopping will be full of flora to climb and parkour.

Advanced Parkour Returns

The Advanced Parkour options available in the original Black Flag are back, but with all the modern tech of the latest updates to the Anvil engine which reintroduced them in a recent major update for AC Shadows.

Advanced Parkour untethers Edward’s full traversal skillset and enables a deeper deal of control, making side ejects and back ejects possible from virtually any height - including non-targeted jumps into the void. With this system active, you can use parkour down to trigger more precise side-eject behavior, while parkour up continues to prioritize height gains and upward momentum.

These tools give experienced players finer control of their traversal lines across Havana’s rooftops, Kingston’s balconies, and Nassau’s rigging networks. However, you can disable it if you prefer a more guided approach.

And yes, we also have a manual jump that reinforces control and decision-making – something we know is heavily discussed amongst players. Manual jump offers more direct control over traversal, allowing you to take shortcuts and increase velocity while parkouring for a smoother flow of movement.

Stealth

Introducing the Observe Feature

Classic Assassin’s Creed Eagle Vision returns for Edward, allowing him to highlight enemies hidden behind walls and objects, as well as isolating any relevant sounds they make.

Now, this skill is enhanced by the Observe feature – first introduced in Assassin’s Creed Shadows – which adds the ability to observe your surroundings to find your quest objectives, clues, and tag enemies. Bringing the camera in closer during Observe mode creates a more cinematic and immersive experience as Edward surveys his surroundings.

Edward can Crouch Anytime

To expand Edward’s stealth options, he can now crouch at any time, and will remain hidden from view anywhere on rooftops, in any suitable vegetation, behind walls or buildings, or behind objects like crates scattered throughout the Caribbean.

Edward is also even less visible at night when crouching, and enemies will take longer to spot him in the dark; however, he will not be fully hidden, so you’ll still need to watch your surroundings and stay out of sight.

“Crouching modifies Edward’s visibility meter, affecting enemy visibility at medium to long range. This is especially useful while stalking through bushes and rooftops. It also reduces movement stimuli, making it easier for Edward to perform stealth kills,” says Paul.

Edward’s Tools

Edward has a full arsenal of tools at his disposal to increase his stealth capabilities:

Blowpipe (Berserk and Sleep Dart)

Edward’s blowpipe returns, loaded with two distinct dart types. Using a Berserk dart will cause an enemy to start attacking his own, creating windows of chaos ideal for slipping past guards undetected (or, if you like to go in guns blazing, Edward can join in the carnage).

Meanwhile, the Sleep dart neutralizes targets silently, making it useful for clearing lightly guarded entrances or setting up diversionary tactics.

Smoke Bomb

The Smoke Bomb returns, allowing Edward to assassinate basic enemies while shrouded in smoke, making it a lethal offensive tool as well as a defensive one. And for players needing a fast escape, the smoke bomb is a great quick-use option.

Rope Dart

Edward’s Rope Dart tool has also returned, which will allow him to strike targets from short to medium ranges, pulling them in closer for an attack, as well as giving him the ability to suspend enemies from beams, both killing them and serving as a distraction to others. And to make the Rope Dart a much more strategic item for Edward, he will be able to get his hands on it much earlier (sequence 3 in Resynced vs. sequence 11 in the original).

Taking Edward’s Hood On or Off

Sail, fight, or sneak how you wish with the hood on/off toggle. With a quick press of a button, Edward can throw his hood on or off, allowing you to take full advantage of those stylish Assassin robes when adventuring across the Caribbean.

Edward’s Social Stealth Mechanics in Urban Centers

Edward can exploit the dense urban environments of the Caribbean's Golden Age of Piracy to outmaneuver and evade enemies through a refined set of social stealth tools.

Improved Tailing and Eavesdropping Missions

“One thing that we really wanted to improve from the original when it comes to stealth was how you would desync from tailing and eavesdropping missions when you were out of range, and that this could be super punishing. We’ve removed this, so that if you get sidetracked and lose a target while trailing or eavesdropping, you’ll still be able to complete the mission,” says Paul.

Hiring NPCs

The Hiring Dancers feature returns from the original game. Edward can recruit a group of dancers who accompany him through the streets, providing natural cover in busy areas. Edward can use them to blend in passively or direct them to distract nearby guards while he plunders loot or retreats after an assassination.

Crowd Blending

Crowd blending also makes a comeback, but with an update: Edward can now blend into any groups of three civilians or more to remain unseen. Benches, walls, haystacks, and closets are also classic returning hiding spots within a busy city.

Throwing Money

And for those who like creating chaos, throwing money remains an option to lure guards and citizens to a location. Edward will have to be selective when using this as it will cost 10 Reales per use, with a very short cooldown window to make you don’t empty your pockets too fast.

Combat

Our combat system is designed to capture the full experience of being a pirate: charismatic, swashbuckling, dual‑wielding swordplay mixed with stylish gunplay.

“At its core, Resynced is an action-adventure game, and combat is designed to be systematic and deliberate; every move is designed to have an advantage, a disadvantage, and a specific role to play,” says Paul.

Takedowns: The Core Combat Loop

The foundation of Resynced’s combat revolves around triggering takedowns – a state where enemies are vulnerable to a deadly finisher. There are many ways to trigger a takedown, each suited to different situations:

  • Hidden Blade Takedown: Breaking an enemy’s defense with multiple attacks will trigger a Hidden Blade takedown
  • Perfect Parry Takedowns: Triggered by timing a Perfect Parry, Edward can chain his takedowns to up to four nearby enemies, depending on the sword he carries.
  • Wall Takedown: Kick an enemy into a wall to initiate a fatal takedown.
  • Ground Takedown: Grounded enemies (from an explosion or Sweep move) can be killed by a Ground Takedown

“Unlocking the Hidden Blade in the story will increase the visual variety of Takedowns in general, as Edward will then use the Hidden Blade as part of his Takedown animation variations, including Chain Takedowns” says Paul.

Environmental Combat

Environments can have a big effect on fights: ledges allow fatal kicks, tight corridors are ideal spaces for Chain Takedowns, powder kegs can be blown up, to drop enemies for a Ground Takedown, walls are killing surfaces which allow Edward to perform Wall Takedowns after a well-placed kick. As Paul puts it, “We wanted each fight situation to feel different without introducing RPG stats.”

Advanced Attacks

Edward also has a new Dodge Attack, which causes additional damage if executed with precise timing – as a Perfect Dodge attack.

The Heavy Attack is another new advanced move to add to his combat kit, performed by holding the attack button. The Heavy Attack provides the highest damage, suitable against advanced foes, but takes a moment to wind up before landing. For maximum punish damage, perform a Heavy Strike at the end of Edward’s basic combo.

Heavy Attacks also vary in function depending on which type of weapon Edward is carrying:

Rapier: Heavy Strikes are more damaging and can pierce through foes. Cutlass: Heavy Strikers cover a wide area, hitting multiple enemies. Pistol-Sword: Two damaging shots are fired, allowing Edward to focus fire on one enemy or spread the damage on two.

Adaptive Enemies

Combat in Resynced is more demanding than before, and enemies can react to repetitive behavior, so players will need to vary their playstyle.

“For example, wait around too much for a Parry, and enemies will react by performing Unstoppable Attacks that cannot be parried. Abuse a Kick too much, and enemies will quickly dodge them. The trick is to alternate between offense and defense. Varying your combos helps. Rotate between Kicks, Sweeps, Rope Darts, Pistols and Heavy Strikes at the end of your attack combos to confuse enemies.” Paul explains.

Advanced Enemy Archetypes and How to Deal with Them

Soldiers coordinate attacks against Edward, which requires him to parry twice in quick succession before performing a Double Takedown.

Not all enemies are made equal, and each requires different tools, tactics, and skills to ensure Edward not only survives an encounter but comes out on top.

Advanced archetypes such as the Brute, Captain, and the new Demolitionist pack a punch and are harder to take down than your average soldier. They will deny Chain Takedowns if they have defense, so Edward will need to use his Flintlock to break defense between Chain Takedowns. This maneuver was inspired by fan-made combat videos from the original Black Flag. Not only this, but these archetypes also have high defense and will more often employ unblockable attacks, making parry opportunities rarer and forcing you to find other strategies like dodges and combos to deal with them.

Edward has several tools and abilities to help him against enemies who have adapted to more predictable combat patterns.

The Rope Dart’s most common utility is drawing an opponent in for a combo, or a direct Sweep into a Ground Takedown. As mentioned, it’s also a ranged attack counter.

A quick shot from the pistol instantly breaks the guard of any advanced archetype, opening them up for attacks they would otherwise deny.

The iconic Gun Kata also returns, allowing Edward to kill multiple nearby enemies in quick succession when you have progressed enough in the game.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has officially been announced, and today we’re taking a closer look at one of the topics we’ve seen many of you discuss: the HUD.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Keyart

In Resynced, the HUD has been reworked to be cleaner, more contextual, and, most importantly, fully customizable – similar to what was done on AC Shadows. Whether you want clear feedback while learning new systems or the most immersive experience possible, the goal is simple: give you control over how much information appears on screen, and when.

At a glance, you’ll notice changes compared to the original such as UI elements that now appear only when they’re relevant — like weapon selection, combat indicators, and health information. You'll be able to customize the visibility of these as you see fit, so let’s dive into that.

Customizing the HUD: Presets

To make things easy for you, Resynced includes several presets that let you jump straight into your preferred experience without adjusting individual settings:

You can always start with a preset and adjust from there as your comfort level changes.

Fully Customizable UI

Beyond presets, every element of the HUD in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced can be enabled or disabled individually for those looking for a finely‑tuned experience that matches exactly how you want to play.

This is where you can play around with blood effects, VFX visibility or in-game notifications to find the right balance between visual guidance, and immersion.

https://preview.redd.it/at7q5ec966yg1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=fb2a08230778b7760316041fc9d43cf99a962e6b

For example, if you’re a player that typically enjoys a minimalist UI, here are some settings you can play around with:

  • Combat – You might keep defense and parry indicators active while learning the new combat mechanics, then later remove health bars or attack indicators once timing and animations feel second nature.

https://preview.redd.it/a16u7oj8h6yg1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=f8b42c5ea9dab7c7ef90b459ca6485044e1fe8a5

  • Stealth – You may prefer keeping only the visibility meter and awareness indicators enabled, while turning off outlines or perception indicators for a more instinct‑driven sneaking approach.
  • Naval Gameplay – You can retain aiming arcs for readability during cannon fire while disabling other naval UI elements for a cleaner view of the sea.

https://preview.redd.it/byokmhk7h6yg1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=76031ede758ff0dddf792207813503963e85b3f8

This level of granularity means you’re in control of the experience. Whether you want targeted feedback for specific systems or a nearly HUD‑free.

Focus: Ground Combat HUD

Ground combat is a great example of how the HUD highlights the gameplay improvements the team worked on for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced to best support players’ decision making.

On default settings, the HUD provides clearer combat visual feedback highlighting the added depth of the reworked combat system, while always remaining optional for players who prefer a more cinematic or minimalist presentation.

For example, enemy health and defense bars will be visible on top of enemies to help understand and master the new enemy defense mechanic.

(Defense represents an enemy’s ability to withstand pressure in a fight. Well‑timed parries, strong attacks, and sustained offensive pressure will deplete an enemy’s defense, opening them up to powerful takedown opportunities.)

This display will highlight how and when enemies are weakened, and how different enemy archetypes respond to specific combat actions – which is at the core of the new combat depth where your choices and the move you trigger will dictate a fight.

https://preview.redd.it/to8l28qdi5yg1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=b762ad98cc8478ecf38e7c311eb0ea1e7fb8f460

The way defense works is that some enemies may crumble quickly under relentless pressure from your sword attacks and be vulnerable for a takedown, while more resisting brutes may have their defense broken by a simple gunshot opening a takedown. This readability is where much of the system’s depth lies compared to the original Black Flag — making enemy behaviors and vulnerabilities clearer and rewarding players who adapt their approach rather than repeating a single tactic.

But this is also where more experienced players can begin to push themselves further. Once you’re familiar with enemy archetypes, combat moves, and the rhythm of defense and takedowns, reducing or removing visual feedback can turn combat into a more instinct driven challenge. For those of you who would rather not play with the health and defense bars, we added a visual tell for you: an enemy’s defense is broken when their hat or headpiece falls off.

Disabling elements like defense indicators, enemy health bars or certain VFX shifts the focus to animations, spacing, and timing — offering a tougher, more cinematic experience for players who want to test their mastery of the system.

https://preview.redd.it/t8bnqhlhi5yg1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=d0195f08393b70ef6f5cc2648544fbc6ad110aa7

Please note: although health and defense bars are present in default settings, this does not change the fact that Black Flag Resynced remains an action-adventure game. The combat works similarly to the original game, with health and defense bars being optional. There are no levels, no gear scores and no progression gates.

How should I play at launch?

Well, we want you to experiment! This level of customization is all about player expression. Try the game on Default or Simple settings to get familiar to the new combat, stealth and naval systems before gradually fine‑tuning the HUD as your confidence grows.

Whether you prefer clear feedback while mastering new mechanics or a more stripped‑back presentation that relies on instinct and observation, the choice is always yours.

And for those looking to fully immerse themselves, playing with minimal or no HUD is also a great way to capture the beauty of the Caribbean for screenshots or cinematic videos to share with the community.

https://preview.redd.it/b0qof1yeb6yg1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=8d64e7a075870800569c7a697addac420f082573

These are just some of the UI customization options available in Resynced.
