[USA] Choosing between a more expensive program that fits my goals vs. a cheaper program

I’m really struggling with a decision between two graduate programs and would really appreciate some perspective from people who are already in psychology/mental health counseling or have gone through a similar decision.

I’m deciding between John Jay College’s Forensic Mental Health Counseling program and Yeshiva University/Ferkauf’s Mental Health Counseling program. The biggest issue is the cost difference. One option would leave me with significantly more debt than the other, so naturally, I’ve had a lot of people tell me that I should choose the cheaper school and avoid taking on unnecessary debt.

The problem is that the more expensive program is also the one that offers the classes/training that I’m actually most interested in. I’m particularly interested in eventually working with things like anxiety, depression, OCD, etc., and potentially having my own private practice in the future. The program that costs more feels like a better fit for what I actually want to study and eventually do.

I’ve talked to several people about this, and even when I explain that the more expensive program has courses and opportunities that are more aligned with my interests, they still tell me to choose the cheaper option. Their reasoning is basically that I’m going into a mental health profession, so I probably won’t make enough money after graduation to justify taking on significantly more debt.

That’s where I’m conflicted. I’ve actually done a lot of research into salaries and career opportunities in my state, and I live in a relatively high-cost/high-income state where mental health professionals can have more earning opportunities than they might in other parts of the country. From what I’ve found, there are ways to eventually earn a pretty good income in this field, especially with licensure, specialization, private practice, insurance/self-pay, etc. Obviously, I know that doesn’t mean I’m guaranteed to make a high salary, especially right after graduation.

So I’m trying to figure out whether I’m being unrealistic by considering the more expensive school, or whether people are being too quick to assume that taking on more debt automatically makes it the wrong choice.

I’m also not trying to justify spending more money simply because I like one school better. I’m genuinely trying to figure out how much the actual program/curriculum and career opportunities should factor into the decision versus minimizing debt.

If you were in my position, would you choose the cheaper program even if the more expensive one was a better academic/career fit? And for anyone who works as an LMHC/LPC or has gone into private practice, how realistic is it to eventually earn a comfortable income in this field?

I’d especially appreciate advice from people who have actually been through graduate school and had to make a similar cost-vs.-fit decision.

P.S - just to mention the more expensive program is online, 4 days a week, 2 hours per day at night whereas the cheaper one is from 11AM - 8PM in the city 2 days a week.

Feedback on Yeshiva University (Ferkauf) Mental Health Counseling (MHC) Master's Program?

Hi everyone,

I am evaluating graduate programs for a Master’s in Mental Health Counseling and considering Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology at Yeshiva University.

I’d love to hear from current students, alumni, or professionals familiar with the program regarding:

  • The quality of clinical training and practicum/internship placement support.
  • Faculty mentorship and preparedness for post-grad licensure (LMHC).
  • The overall academic rigor and cohort culture.

Any insights on whether the program's ROI and clinical reputation match its cost would be greatly appreciated!

AITA for yelling at my dad for something he said

I (19F) rarely ask for my parents to buy me specific foods/drinks out of food/money guilt which is something I struggled with for a long time. As a kid while all my siblings were asking my parents for specific snacks or drinks for school I always held back because I was worried about my parents finances as this was something my family struggled with when I was little. Now thank god my parents are financially stable and more lenient to buying us items but I still hold back because of my thought process during childhood.

This week me and my mom (45F) went shopping and passed by a few lemonade drinks that were on sale. I saw a flavor I really liked and asked for it, and my mom knowing how I rarely asked for things was happy to grab onto that opportunity and she bought it without hesitation. When we came home we dropped everything off and left somewhere else and came back in time for dinner. In the kitchen while I was eating my dad (50M) opened up the fridge saw the lemonade and asked my mom did he not think of his other children (my 2 youngest siblings) when buying what I requested. My mom said that she did but she remembered the previous week she bought them something they didn't drink yet and it was still left over (a full bottle) so she didn't buy them anything this week, and if anything she bought something for me AND my dad.

At this my dad went beserk and said that my mom doesn't care about anyone else and that she only cares about me and he stormed off. Now usually I know to leave him alone when it comes to times like this but what really drove me to the edge was when he left he started telling my little brother (13M) that my mom only cares about me and everything in the fridge is mine (which is 100% not true considering I barley eat as it is and if anything is mine in that fridge its something from months ago I never bothered opening or finishing.) So I left the kitchen and went to confront him telling him that this is the one time I asked for something and it shouldn't be that big of a deal anyway if he thinks everything in the fridge is mine considering how many ice cream bars fill our freezer which is what he got my siblings. I was so upset that I ran to my wallet gave him 20 bucks and said if he wants I can just go tomorrow to the store and buy my siblings the lemonade they like. He refused, shoved the money back in my hand and left but I was hurt by what he said.

I went back to eat my dinner crying telling my mom this is why I always feel guilty for asking for specific foods because stuff like this always happens. While my mom was trying to calm me down my dad came into the kitchen and took my dinner (which is the first meal I managed to eat today) and threw it all in the trash. He then took my GLASS cup and smashed it on the floor and said I don't deserve to have anything and I should just leave. He then started yelling at my mom and I yelled back to the point where all my siblings came down from their rooms from all that noise.

Question help with schedule

hi everyone! i am attending a CUNY grad school in the fall and originally signed up with 5 classes before talking with my advisor, and once I reached out to the advisor they let me know my schedule was good and there was no problem with it. The problem starts when I reached out to the school to swap one of my classes in hopes of an over tally due to commuting but sadly I was denied which isn't that big of a deal for me but what is making me worried is what the email said.

They mentioned that taking 5 classes the first semester of grad school seems a bit much and they really recommend only taking 4 classes and they suggest I should drop one of the classes. The thing is as an undergraduate student i used to take 6 or 7 classes per semester so if anything i felt like 5 classes was too little, but understanding it was grad school I decided to start small. The school page says it takes 2.5 years to get the masters (4 classes per semester) but I only planned to take 4 classes during my 2nd year which is when clinicals start. I was wondering if anyone can offer advice on if I should keep my 5 classes or drop it too 4?

P.S - I made sure to sign up for classes with amazing professors with good RMP's who according to recent reviews for those classes don't deliver that much coursework.

need help finding a deleted bts fanfic

hi i am looking for a deleted bts fanfic (sadly I don't have the link saved) but I do remember most of the plot. 6 of the members are the heros of the city, kinda like the avengers (they even have their own tower and everything) and jungkook is just a regular human. One day a villian comes into a museum and one of the members comes and saves him and falls in love with him, then another villain comes and destroys his house so then he starts living with the other 6 members. If anyone has a pdf of it I would appreciate it!!
