Driver, passenger in Alamo expressway crash arrested on child endangerment charges
The Alamo Police Department announced they arrested the driver of a silver Dodge Durango involved in a crash on the expressway last week that hospitalized six people, including a 5-year-old who remains in critical condition. Francisco Davila Jr. and Samantha Vianney Rodriguez are facing charges of endangering a child in connection with the crash involving a tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer driver was arrested last week.

The other three floors all have windows, foot traffic from students and library staff, and help desks, but the 4th floor in particular doesn't have any windows, help desks, nor doesn't have that many foot traffic. It's just mainly stacks with some study areas which makes it stand out from the other floors of this library.

Harambe, who was born at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, TX, died 10 years ago today (May 28, 2016)
Harambe was born on May 27, 1999, at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas. Harambe was a western lowland gorilla, which is a critically endangered species. Harambe name was given by Dan Van Coppenolle, a Brownsville ISD counselor who won a contest in naming the newborn baby gorilla. Harambe is a Swahili word which translates to "working together" Coppenolle said that the 1988 song Harambe (working together for freedom) by Rita Marley is what inspired him in naming the gorilla Harambe.
Harambe spent 15 years of his life at the Gladys Porter Zoo until he was transferred to the Cincinnati Zoo in 2014.
On May 28, 2016, Harambe was shot and killed at the Cincinnati Zoo after a child fell into the gorilla enclosure. His death sparked national outrage and many debates about whether killing Harambe was justifiable or not. Since then, Harambe has left a cultural impact and legacy that's still talked about to this day.

Questions arise over security at canal near Mercedes where a Progreso teen tragically drowned
The canal in the Mercedes area where a 17 year old Progreso ISD student drowned is privately owned, officials said. The canal is privately owned by the irrigation district. Fishing is also not allowed at the canal.
On May 24, 2026 17-year-old Samuel Hernandez drowned in the canal while fishing with friends. The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office said Hernandez went into the water after a fishing line got stuck in the canal.
