Y’all came out strong like a community should against these types of things. Im so proud of y’all!!

Hopefully we can keep this type of energy going, and get the council to somehow bring a grocery store to SE Raleigh soon as well!

Anyone here been involved in planning and executing on the building of a city run rink?

TLDR - I'm going to go petition my City Council to look at using public land to build a public ice rink to help continue to grow the game of hockey and need help with figuring out a way to estimate costs and all the other shit that comes along with it.

Hello fellow Redditors,

I was fortunate enough to grow up along Lake Ontario in prime hockey country where we had 2 public ice rinks in town that helped grow my love of the game and kept me out of trouble in my youth. Access to private ice time was inexpensive and open skate was free. I was raised by a single mother who worked shift work as a nurse so that helped me be able to play the game.

Here in Raleigh, NC, the game of hockey has exploded. With transplants and the Hurricanes winning their second cup, it's only going to keep growing. However, much like seen around the US and Canada, private companies have strong holds on the ice rinks and organizations around town which charge insane prices that prevent a lot of people from being able to play a game that they love to watch on TV. Both my grandfathers had a large role in organizing the local rec leagues in my hometown, and I want to continue on that journey of helping making Hockey a sport anyone should be able to enjoy.

So my ask for those who are more intelligent than myself - what sort of resources are out there I can use to help pull together a legitimate plan I can use to present the local city council to begin funding a public ice rink?

Any and all help appreciated!

Does anyone here live at Rhyne's Gate Apartments?

Hello all - not a State student but am involved in the local community happenings. I'm posting in an attempt to gather more information about a re-zoning case that was presented at the Raleigh City Planning Commission meeting this morning.

At a high level view, a developer out of Philly is looking to demolish the entirety of Rhyne's Gate Apartments and a small stretch of row housing on Carlton Ave next to/behind the apartment complex. In total, 187 units would demolished however the new complex would have 483 new units. Its in the Transit Overlay District.

Conditions being added to "sweeten the deal" to get approval from the Planning Commission and City Council:

  1. 120 day notice of early termination of lease as redevelopment starts
  2. Barring Tattoo/piercing shops. taxidermists, and wedding chapels (sorry the LOYL will have to be wed elsewhere, not have the basketball game celebrations!)
  3. $2,500 check for relocation if their lease is subject to the standards included in condition #3 (see #1, if your lease ends greater than 120 days before re-dev, you will get payment. Less than 120 days, you will not get the payment)

Some questions I have as someone unfamiliar with the existing structures that will be redeveloped:

  1. Are you or do you know of any one who lives here?
  2. As a student, what sort of questions would you want asked or what would have you approve/oppose this development?
  3. Is Rhyne's Gate a known student housing complex, or does it happen to just have a high number of student's living there due to the proximity to the college?
  4. Do you feel a 1 time, $2,500 relocation check is sufficient to support being relocated?

Due to the information I am asking, I am withholding my personal opinion on this as I want to remain as objective as possible. I know student housing is an issue and getting y'all affordable units close to campus is a hot topic. Any and all input you have is much appreciated.

Below I have linked some important sources for your reference so you do not have to go digging through things.

  1. Presentation slides given by City Staff at the meeting
  2. The re-zoning application itself
  3. The Youtube broadcast for this re-zoning this morning (Starts at 3 hours and 6 minutes in case it does link correctly)

Had the chance to meet and congratulate Key last night in Raleigh

He feels a certain way about the Rangers. He was welcoming at first when I first introduced myself and congratulated him on his performance this year. As soon as I told him I was a life long Rangers fan, and how happy I was to see him win, the vibe changed IMMEDIATELY and he got super cold. While I am not going to speculate and act like I know every single pleasantry and do’s and don’t with players, it was clearly obvious when Rangers got mentioned, it was palpable.

I really hate how our team’s staff destroys players.
