György Ligeti, one of the most visionary avant-garde composers of the 20th century, was born in Târnăveni (Transylvania) to a Hungarian-Jewish family. His unique, atmospheric sound caught the ear of legendary director Stanley Kubrick, who used Ligeti's brilliant compositions to define the mood of his greatest masterpieces:
