Nightmare: Awakening rules review - I appreciate you!

Nightmare: Awakening rules review - I appreciate you!

Gamers, of Reddit! I request your assistance. The game Nightmare has been in development on and off again for years, but 2026 has seen some significant advancement. Game design, revision, and play testing have gotten me to this point. Now, I wish to expand to a wider audience.
Next step: Tabletop Simulator.

Before that, a review of the rules. Yes, it does appear to be heavy at 38 pages, but it is very comprehensive. The document contains everything from what the game is, how it is played, what is involved, and how to win.
It is not a quick, small scale type of game. Similar to Nemesis, though I have never played it. Yet...
I already know of a few edits I need to make, but appreciate feedback. Tear it apart. What doesn't make sense? What is irrelevant? What works well?

This is a co-operative survival-horror game about identity, memory, and psychological pressure. The core systems are playable and tested. Here are the rules. I've identified one unresolved design question, particularly around the final escape.

Escape is currently the game's final mechanical hurdle. Once a Walker has recovered all six Portrait Fragments and reaches an Escape Dreamscape, the Dream Strider follows them and they must make a final Memory Check.
I'm happy with the mechanical clarity, but I'm not yet convinced the final confrontation has enough thematic weight. The intended moment is essentially:
The Dream Strider: "You cannot leave."
The Walker: "I remember who I am."
Does the current Escape mechanism feel sufficiently climactic, or would you expect a final confrontation to involve greater risk, choice, or consequence?

Attached image is the draft Sell Sheet as well, for added reference. Much work required for that. Much indeed.

Worldbuilders assemble! Bring your faction forth!

Worldbuilders assemble! Bring your favourite faction forth

Every world, every civilization, every region, every empire... all have a group of individuals who share a purpose. They all have a history. They are all received by other differently. They all believe they exist for a reason.

What is one faction, organization, cult, assembly, or group that you personally enjoy thinking about, designing, and forming ideas of how they impact your world?

For me, it is the Bayrushi. Ancient flame-wielding warriors that have become legend and myth. When they first formed it was in defence against the Kori-Akuma - ice devils, more commonly referred to as Frostreavers.
Large like trolls, but ferocious like wild wolves, the Frostreavers plagued the lands with senseless destruction. The Bayrushi formed to burn them from existence.
In current day, the Bayrushi legend is in the heart of the desert landscape of Ademar. The Kori-Akuma reside with the northern frozen wastelands.
What perplexes scholars is that the two are leagues apart from each other. It would take months of travel for one to find the other, so how did they come to be such feared and violent enemies? Ancient historians know that the lands that lay across the seas used to be one great expansive mass. Yet the history of the two existing in this time is not known.
Will the Frostreavers venture out of the north and renew their destroyer tendencies? Will the Bayrushi arrive to force the back? Do they actually still exist, or their story lost to time?

Who exists in your world to shape current events or is little more than a story?

Nightmare - a journey through the dreamworld

From humble beginnings many years ago to where I am now, this game has changed much.
Not only in design and art but in overall mechanics. I had an idea and made something of it - continue to make something.
This journey is not over, yet sometimes feels like it's only beginning. Now they are individual trackers with a cube that slides along as they shift. Easier to work with, easier to read, requires less components.

The dreamscapes themselves were once rectangles, now are 4" square tiles for ease of placement and space coverage.
The Walker character card have had a complete overhaul as mechanics shifted. Four key Traits remain, though placement on the card and tracking have significantly changed. First they were to be tracked with discs to spin as they change. Then they became dice. Neither were very suitable for production or use.
Working with tools and skill available with GIMP, and those with far greater skill than I, I have some better artwork to demonstrate what it could look like. Definitely not the final product, as I seek out artists, and likely a tone shift ahead. It feels dark and ominous. But as dark, not always the easiest to read.

GIMP, Dextrous.com.au, The Game Crafter, dedicated friends, all valuable resources to take an idea into something.

Not done yet. But getting there. The more I play test the less I revise. Still fixing mistakes though. Those happen.
Future plans are to minimize the graphics and get into Tabletop Simulator. Should help with play testing.
In theory. Everything is theory until applied and tested. Then it becomes reality.

And reality for me... is a Nightmare. Care to dream with me?

Advertising - does it exist for you?

Comparing to the real world and last hundred years of people, corporations, and industries having something to sell, does your world have the industry of advertisements?
Is there something that is mass produced for sale?
Services available for hire?
Transportation systems that desire expansion?
Products and services that come fro distant lands?

What is someone trying to sell that people in your world apparently need?

The Game Crafter - lessons learned

For those that have used the website The Game Crafter, I have questions.
In my time designing a tabletop game, I came across the site and first go at it I found useful. Understanding production brought me to not only revise my own game components, but understanding possible cost brought me to remove components and mechanics from the core game to create add-on expansions.

So, the questions:
Have you found the process of taking your game idea into production design a relatively smooth process? Was any part overly cumbersome?

Have you completed the entire process and ordered a copy of your own game? Pleased with the results? Significant adjustments as a result?

Taking your product this far, have others purchased through the site? Was there any involvement from your end or did you just sit back and let it flow?

Has any level of success there taken you into other ventures as a result?

Have any of you purchased any games from the site? Pleased with the acquisition?

If you haven’t used the site yet, would you?

I appreciate your thoughts and opinions.

New game logo - Nightmare, updated

A couple of days ago I posted the logo/graphic for my game in progress 'Nightmare'.
Swipe through to see progress variants. The one with the title text is most current and up to date. Fourth image is where I began. Fifth image is... optional flair to describe my mental state. ^^

My skills in GIMP are developing but still... rough. Yet I like what I have created so far.
Future edits:
* bottom left where the crystal (dream shard) is, create a glow outwards, indicating hope
* top right where dark entity (Dream Strider) is, great a glow inwards, indicating dread
I need research and education on how to get those effects to work. One day I'll get there.

Thoughts and opinions on the images?
What do you feel it represents?
What can you interpret each peace to be as?

Thank you in advance, incredible creators.

New game logo - Nightmare

So, in the process of working on a sell sheet to advertise what my game is I needed a logo.

I have very limited artistic talent. But I do have GIMP. And a source of free images.
So, I got to work.

I am interested to know what the community perceives when lokkkng at this. What questions come to mind without knowing anything of the game.
This is the first rendition. I already have adjustments in mind.

Tell me your thoughts, oh wonderful and perceptive gamers.
I appreciate them.

Your creations are beautiful and amazing

I just wanted to share with everyone here, that in my few short months of activity in various worldbuilding and related subreddits I have come across many incredible creations.

What you all come up with amazes me. The depth of creativity. The varied ingenuity. The artistic flair.

I have posed questions. Read conversations. Greatly expanded my knowledge of what worldbuilding is and what it means.

You all are all incredible.
Your creations are incredible.
Whether new to this adventure or a seasoned veteran, what you bring to the world matters. The stories matter.

Don't stop creating.
Don't let negative criticism dissuade you.
Don't feel overwhelmed by pressure to complete.

Simply... create.
Also share. Wonderful things are best when shared.

What is the oldest lie still believed in your world?

Not something that is considered a conspiracy or secret.

A lie so old that nobody remembers it was ever a lie.

Perhaps it became religion.
Referenced history.
Recorded law.
Common wisdom.

What do people know and share that was never truth?

Every world has a place nobody should go.

Not necessarily because it’s dangerous. Because something feels wrong there.
Maybe it’s cursed.
Maybe it’s sacred.
Maybe everyone knows stories about it.
Maybe nobody remembers why it’s avoided anymore.

What is that place in your world? And how much of the rumor is actually true?

I’m designing a worldbuilding workbook. Does this presentation communicate its purpose?

I’ve been creating a series of guided worldbuilding workbooks and I’m trying to improve how I present them visually.

When you see these images, what do you think the product is?

Is the purpose immediately clear?

What questions would you have before deciding whether the workbook would be useful to you?

Without additional description, what do you believe this product is?

I appreciate your thought and feedback.

Seeking Worldbuilders for Framework Playtest

I’ve been developing a collection of worldbuilding workbooks designed to guide creators through building fantasy worlds, settlements, creatures, magic systems, and more.

I’m looking for a small number of volunteers willing to test one Framework and provide honest feedback.

Currently available for testing:
Creature Ecology -> 30+ pages to help guide the creation of unique life
Resource Codex -> 20+ pages to help design material to create items of power, or to sustain civilization
Settlement Builder -> 50+ pages to help design meaningful places for residents of your world to live

No purchase required.

In exchange, I simply ask for constructive feedback after use.

If interested, comment below or send me a message with which Framework you’d like to test and what type of worldbuilding you enjoy.

Resources that matter - how do you create them?

Most think of something as it is - powerful potions, durable armor, weapons of elegant death, or fuel to empower something magnificent.
But how much thought do you put into not only the history of how something is created, but what it is created from?

A rare metal from the heavens or deep below ground to be forged.
A precious herb required to create a potion of powerful that is only found atop high cliffs once every ten years.
The feathers of an elusive white owl found in the hinterlands, which arcanists favour to write their spell books.
Or the deep rock spiders, whose silk is used to fashion incredibly lightweight and nearly indestructible rope.

What does your would hold that has great value?
Is it rare and hard to acquire?
Has industry formed upon it?
Do elders share stories with children about how it was first discovered?

Share something that your world depends on. Or maybe it hasn’t been discovered yet…

Do “primitives” exist in your world?

In the land of Athil Vestra, the mortals history has come to reference as the “primitives” were the first beings on the planet.
They lacked the understanding of the greater world and the cosmos. They formed tribes with simple hierarchies, where the leaders were the ones that believed great gods existed and controlled every aspect of their lives, so they needed to be worshiped and offered sacrifices.
There were gods that created them, but they only watched their creation live their simple, yet misguided, existence. They had no direct influence, regardless of what the simple mortals did. It was only nature and the presence of celestial bodies that held control and influence.

In the world(s) you have created, do simple mortals exist? Or had they?
Ones that hold no concept or understanding of magic or technology?
Ones that only know their world as far as they have travelled?
