[OC] Scroll of Fireball or Custard (DCC)

Well this one is a shameless borrow from the Dungeon Crawler Carl book series. Thanks Matt!

Re-reading the books and I was thinking about this item from DCC. I desperately wanted to make this into an item to give to my players... So I did. It's meant to be an "oh shit" failsafe type thing rather than a super tactical use item.

Thoughts on implementation and balance?

It seems pretty fair to me since it's a pretty clean 50/50 shot at obliteration or mega-healing. I did the temp hit points thing because I wanted to prevent players from using this at the start of a fight when enemies are already at max HP. They CAN attempt to heal themselves with it, but it requires strategic positioning and also healing at least one enemy. That, or they'll blow themselves to smithereens.

FWIW this is for a difficult campaign where deaths are expected, and the players know that. They wanted a gritty campaign with real consequences, so ... Here we are. Can't wait to dangle this shiny carrot in front of them.

All the stories I've told on one island.

Teressa is one island in an archipelago continent, one of five in my world of Zemera. Admittedly, it is the region I've focused on the most in the past 6 years of playing D&D and writing a little bit of fiction (vaibhavguptawho.com!)

Today morning I made this, as a reminder to myself that I should chase depth over width, that I should come back again and again to a project, that I should share with the world.

Really proud of this, and it keeps going with our new online campaign.

I remade a map.

Made using Wonderdraft.

Adwitwald is a cursed town that has been lost in the mists for centuries. The nearby kingdoms didn't know about it until 623CT. But the criminal underbelly knew about them - about 300 years ago, a pirate known as Ma Barker established Barker Town nearby, a perfect haven safe from the law.

I've used Adwitwald as a town in D&D games for over 5 years now, but until recently I was working off the terrible first map I'd made long ago.

A new campaign around the curse of Adwitwald is starting up soon with some online players, so I spent yesterday redrawing a map, and I'm really happy with how it came out! What do you think?

Welcome to the Black Ink Society!

Hi folks, my name is Vaibhav. I run a D&D and TTRPG community in Bangalore called the Black Ink Society. We run in-person games, several campaigns in fact, and have just started up our online games as well.

I've been a Game Master since 2020, and have run games professionally (i.e. paid) since 2023. Before that, I was a 2x Distinguished Toastmaster and I mentored 120+ young speakers. My day job is as a professional writer, which I've been doing for 16 years.

The community is called the Black Ink Society after the guild name for my first West Marches campaign called A Lotus in the Ashes (or, ALITA). It was a big success because of its flexible nature - the story continues no matter who shows up to play. We're all part of a guild with a common purpose.

Since then, our community has started up 5 more campaigns, all built around this flexible West Marches nature. We also specialize in teaching beginners and first-timers, so you'll always have a home here.

It's my first time running a community on my own, so I come into this space with some trepidation, but I'm confident that we've got something special here. The 110+ people we have in our community already feel special, and we welcome all types of folks, neurodivergent especially.

If you join us, please feel free to reach out to me at any point for anything. I may take some time to reply but I will do so. Hope to see you around!
