Guides, tickets, and groups

I’m bringing a group of 11 to Rome over the Christmas week. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do tickets for the Vatican, the Roman Forum/Colosseum, and other events. I’d really love to hire a guide for all of these things but our group seems a little too big for Get Your Guide and the prices are astronomical. I’m also freaked out by all the bad reviews of Viator, GYG, and others. Any suggestions for private guides or tours that we could arrange for a group this size?

Meal Planning

My favorite thing to do on Sundays is browse through the cookbook stash and pick out recipes for the week. This is today’s pile of cookbooks. Any great suggestions from these? So far the list includes some favorites - like the turkey meatloaf and ranch potatoes from Smitten Kitchen and the lemon cauliflower soup from By Heart. There are also some new contenders, like Melissa Clark’s ratatouille and the peach vinaigrette from By Heart.

How To Decide Goal Weight?

I’m interested in hearing about how you picked a goal weight.

F48, 5’9. SW 337; bariatric surgery in 2021. Post surgery weight: 214. Started Zepbound in January. CW 162. Photos at 313, 225, and now.

I’ve been obese my entire life, since childhood. The lowest adult weight I can remember being at was 178 in high school. And now I’m closing in on 160. I’m wearing a size 10 for the first time in my adult life. I have a “normal” BMi. My bloodwork looks good and my dexa scan looks good for muscle mass. I’m literally surprised by all of this.

So now, I’m in terra incognita. I’ve never been in this universe before. My entire life, my goal has been to lose weight; I’ve never come close enough to think about where I ultimately want to be. Aesthetically, I’d love to look leaner but a big part of that is certainly loose skin. I have a separate goal of continuing to lift and build muscle mass, but that is not helping me to think about what the ultimate number is for weight.

With that in mind, how do you know whether you’re at goal or not? I have this temptation to keep trying to lose and see how low I can go, but that seems insane - just a habit based off of years of defining my goals as “lose weight.” I’d like to be more targeted than that and more sophisticated. If I am at goal; then I need to celebrate and maintain - not just keep chasing lower numbers. But I genuinely don’t know if I’m there. And I don’t feel “skinny” like I thought I might at this point.

My doctor doesn’t have any particular expertise in weight management, so while I am consulting with her, I am hopeful that your stories will provide context and insight for me as well.

When is it time to quit?

My son is 13/8th grade, and it’s about time to renew for another year of travel ball. He’s aged out of the recreational and intermediate options in our town. He’s a good hitter, a decent catcher, decent at the corners, bad in the field.

My question is less about him, though, and more about you. How did your son decide when to hang up the cleats? Was it his decision alone or a family decision? Based on performance, work, happiness? And looking back, was it the right decision?

I am trying to support my kiddo in making a decision that feels exactly right to him and that will continue to feel good as he moves towards high school. I’d love to hear your stories.

Progressive Overload Program

Middle-aged woman looking for a program to build muscle. Can Peloton do this for me? I really want a pre-designed program so I don’t have to think about which classes to take and how to structure everything myself.

A1C success!

I (48 F) lost 120 lbs after gastric bypass surgery. While I felt great, I was always bothered by the fact that the surgery did not reduce my A1C. It was stuck at around 5.6%, including some readings at 5.7%, regardless of whether I weighed 330 or 210.

After six months of Zepbound, I’ve not only dropped 45 lbs, but my A1C has dropped almost a percentage point - to 4.9%. It’s extraordinary. And really tells me that there’s something going on in our bodies that is much more medically complex than just body weight.

Current weight is 166 and I’m at a “normal” bmi for the first time in my adult life. What a moment!

[edited to fix typo and provide clarity about the numbers]

Advice for JOs?

Taking my 16U player to JOs for the first time. Any tips, tricks on what to pack and how to manage the long tournament? We’re flying in and renting a car so won’t be able to pack the whole cooler/stadium seats/etc.

In case it matters to the advice, we are not doing the college recruiting stuff - just playing for fun.

There’s No Morality Associated With Your Dose

This is a public service announcement.

There is so much shame and embarrassment about obesity. And some of that, despite our best efforts, filters into this sub every time people talk about dosing. There are so many posts expressing disappointment or shame about “having to go to a higher dose.”

But here’s the thing: the dose that is effective for you is a medical reality based in your biology. It is not based on how hard you’re working or how compliant or good you are. It has nothing to do with self discipline or willpower. It is about your biology. You don’t get any brownie points or moral kudos for losing weight on a 2.5 or a 15.

So stop agonizing about having to move up. Stop judging yourself for “failing to lose weight” at 2.5. Give yourself the freedom to embrace that this is biological and there is a medication that can be effective if you have the right dose.

The very best thing about GLP-1 drugs for me is that they made abundantly clear what we all knew - which is that body weight is far more complex and far less in our control than the diet plans of yesteryear ever acknowledged. Your weight is about your biology.

Release all that shame and judgment and treat this like the medical issue it is, and give yourself the gift of an effective dosage regardless of whether it’s 2.5 or 15. No fear. No shame. No judgment.

Just freedom.

Housekeeper/House Manager - Agency?

Does anyone have a recommendation for an agency that could help us find a housekeeper? I am hoping to hire someone who can serve as a part-time house manager for a family member. The role would include light cleaning, tidying, laundry, organizing the refrigerator, some grocery shopping - those types of tasks. Does anyone have suggestions for where I could find such a person? I would really like to go through an agency rather than through care.com. Thank you for any ideas!

Moved to 7.5. Immediately broke stall.

48 F, 5’8, SW 213, CW 177. Just posting a data point. I started Zep in January and lost a bunch on 5 mg. I started to stall out over the month of May, bouncing between 181 and 178 but hovering around 180. I finally moved to 7.5 this week and today, literally 4 days after the shot, am at 177. I see a lot of questions about when to move up in dose and thought this was a useful data point on what titrating up might look like.

Chuck Corica Golf Trial

  1. Does anyone have a good summary of what the actual charges are against the operators? Or a link to the docket?

  2. Any updates on the trial itself; I think it started this week?

I see a lot of PR about this but am interested in understanding what the actual pleadings are. Trials do not happen all the time; most cases settle. It is really surprising that the parties would take this to trial unless there are issues that are more serious than the PR campaign suggests.
