All In Robin’s Yellow Challenge

All In Robin’s Yellow Challenge

So who else is like dying after taking a couple of her classes so far during this challenge???
I just took the 2nd class and dang it’s definitely a grind, I mean I’m all about a good hard hills climb ride but this class was definitely a challenge.
For those of us participating in this challenge, what’s been the most challenging ride for you so far?

Meditations for grief

I know there are three grief mediations when you search the app, but was wondering if anybody has found any other meditations that may be titled something else helpful?

Peloton Users - Would Love Your Input on a College Project

Hi everyone! My group and I are working on a college new product marketing project on Peloton and premium hybrid fitness experiences. We are researching consumer perceptions of the brand and interest in Peloton’s future direction.

The survey is short, about 5 minutes and anonymous. We'd really appreciate any responses from Peloton users or anyone familiar with the brand. We have asked around our own circles, but to get more relevant data, we are hoping to hear directly from Peloton users themselves. Your feedback would really help our research!

Here is the link below:

Thank you!

Recommend your fave 10 min stretchy yoga classes

Instead of a full body stretch after a ride or run, I’ve been really enjoying taking a 10-minute flow to close out my workout. I’ve done Denis’ most recent yoga for runners about 100 times so I’m looking for some new recs and this sub always comes through! Bonus for links.

I love slow flows that target the hips, back, quads and hamstrings that are stretchy but have more movement than a stretch class, if that makes sense.

My personalized weekly plan is all messed up! Help!

Has anyone ever experienced this before? I started my personalized plan about 4 weeks ago and for some reason this week’s workouts are jumbled around. As you can see from my screenshots, Saturday is my cardio workout but it’s giving me recommendations for glutes and legs.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is my recovery day but it’s showing recommendations for upper body strength. The cardio recommended classes are showing up as “Music”….like what is that LOL?

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas for why this is happening, I’d love some input. I’m a very visual person, so this is really f*cking with my motivation and planning for the week. 😮‍💨

Camilla in Toronto doing a community run on Global Running Day.

I am so excited! Received an invitation by email to register and got in. I never get in to such events, always go to register and they are sold out!
And Camilla is one of my favourites.

The Music Math - Read This If You're Upset About The Spotify Playlists

i've been seeing a ton of posts complaining about the music and the spotify partnership.

from what i have read and experienced, this "issue" is only affecting app users. if you have an all-access membership, your playlists, the music catalogue and overall experience have not changed. (edited to add: specifically for equipment-based classes: tread, bike, row)

there are two tiers of subscription on the app. $29 and $16 ($35 & $17 in canada).

music streamed through peloton programming is considered "public performance" and as such, royalties are paid. peloton pays some of the highest royalties in the business; around $0.04 per stream. that's magnitudes higher than everyone else. if you want to know why? google it. that in itself is an interesting read.

which is great for the artists.

some baseline math:
it costs peloton around $5500 to produce a single class, and the output is ~55 classes per week, meaning the company's weekly operating costs are around $300k.

high quality production is expensive. that is an unavoidable fact.

in every other streaming business in the world, (streaming costs and data storage aside) once a production is locked, wrapped and made available for streaming, all it does it make money. but not with peloton. every single time it gets streamed it costs the company in royalties.

a 30 minute song contains, on average, 9 songs. so when you do a 30 minute ally love barre class, it costs peloton $0.34 just in music. every single time it's streamed.

if you're an app one subscriber and you're doing a 30 minute class daily, 62% of your subscription is paying for royalties.

if you spend just 7 hours on the app in a month, the company is losing money on your subscription.

7 hours and you're now a liability.

so what are the options?

  1. raise prices
  2. limit usage
  3. trim expenses

the company doesn't want to raise prices. they know people are feeling the economic pinch and they know that during times of economic uncertainty, things like this are the first to go. and they definitely aren't going to cap your usage.

they aren't going to lower production quality.

they aren't going to produce less content.

so what's left?

royalty free music.

royalty free music gives the platform a solid way to ensure that every single membership level is profitable (sustainable) without artificially increasing revenue through price adjustment or other drastic measures that will have an impact on the rest of the company and clientele.

the bottom line:

the company is doing what it has to do to ensure a sustainable business model in a way that makes the most sense for the long term viability of the company while ensuring peak experience for the most valuable customer.

waiver: i am not affiliated with peloton in any way shape or form. i have no inside information at all. my only relationship to them is as a customer. i just happen to have an interest and understanding of this issue because i am involved professionally in entertainment on multiple levels, one of which directly involves licensing and streaming. this peloton x spotify situation caused me to do a deep dive into their business model.

Spotify partnership

I just want to vent. This Spotify partnership is absolutely ruining the Peloton experience for us paying members. Look at this playlist from Ally Love's most recent barre class. It's all elevator music and not a single artist that I've heard of. This seems to be happening over and over again. I chose the Peloton app because it's one of the few apps with licensed music and now the only classes with reliably good music are the ones for the hardware. And it seems like all of the older classes are not safe anymore either. So disappointing.

Maycember is in full swing

And im giving myself some grace on the workouts because I literally have no time and my schedule is whack and sometimes I cant even do a meditation because my husband is already asleep.

So this is a plug for Hosky’s one and only meditation. It’s a ‘wind down’ where he reads romeo and juliet. Such a random find, a good filler when I have 5 minutes and not a second longer. Extra good if you grew up in the Leo and Claire Danes era (Im old).

Tricks to finding classes with the right running interval length

I’m doing a 12 week 10k training plan that requires specific running interval lengths (eg. 4 mins tempo x 2 mins rest or 5 mins tempo x 3 mins rest) during specific weeks. I love finding tread classes that follow these, as it makes the workout so much less taxing on my brain, but sorting thru the classes has been time consuming and frustrating.

Does anyone have any suggestions (other than using Pelo programs)? I am seriously thinking I need to make a spreadsheet of the class plans so I don’t waste any more time scrolling 😬

Unhinged Jos is the best Jos

If you need a mood lifter, Jos's 15min 80s walk from the 27th of April is THE class. (for some reason it won't let me link).

She gets the lyrics wrong in the first song and then gets them wrong again before finally getting it right in the last chorus. Her focus the entire class is just proving she knows the lyrics to songs. It's funny, relatable, unhinged, and just the best. Not a hard class, but the class you need if you just want a mental break and something to distract you.

In praise of Hannah Frankson

I just got off yet another ride with Hannah Frankson, and realised I almost always prefer to take HIIT and Tabata with her. I love how structured her classes are, but she also has a great way of chatting loosely to keep you relaxed, which helps in miserable efforts. She never seems to be plugging anything or pushing you to hustle harder, she just exudes good humor and positivity. She also has impeccable cuing and great music choices. If you haven’t taken a ride with her you are missing out!

Very confused by Peloton support regarding renting a bike

I have to temporarily move across country for 4 months for work, and thought that rending a Peloton would be an awesome way to continue working out. I noticed that they only show it online as including an All-Access membership, which is fine, but I wanted to make sure I could continue using my account and keeping my streak.

Posting the chat thread I had with the agent because it was so bizarre and confusing. Has anyone rented one temporarily before, and if so, how was your experience?

How to prevent Bike+ from rusting again? Pictures of damage included!

I sweat significantly more than most people. On a 2 hour Peloton ride I'll drink 4 750ml water bottles and still weigh less at the end of the ride than at the beginning. I do try to wipe down the Bike - but I'm not perfect. This has caused my Bike+ to rust quite badly - see photos.

My reported power on the Bike+ recently started getting worse and worse. I did not think I had gotten less fit so I blamed the bike. I noticed the belt tensioner bearing was completely corroded and making noise but replacing that did not fix the low power issue. I thought about replacing the bottom bracket, the flywheel bearings, and the pedals - but at that point it's probably cheaper to get a used Bike+ so that's what I did. With the new to me used Bike+ my reported power jumped up ~50% and back to where it had been.

So I'd like to find a way to get the new to me used Bike+ to not turn into a rusty mess again. I ordered this protection towel for the Bike but it is clearly designed for Bike, not Bike+, as it interferes with the USB-C connector on the front of the bike. Further it does not cover enough of the bike - specifically I'd like for something to cover the area above the pedals because sweat pools there and causes rust.

Any suggestions besides doing a better job of wiping down my bike after rides?

Who is your favorite “quick stretch” instructor

Just after the ride, most instructors will do a quick hamstring and calf stretch while still clipped in. But the style of each instructor varies slightly. Some are more upright like Sam Yo while others lean their cheat fully down. Some tend to focus on both legs at the same time where others have cues to focus on one leg. I’m curious if other people have noticed this slight difference and if anybody has a preferred instructor for this aspect of the ride. I get that it is not a driving force to take a class, but the differences are interesting at least to me.

Robin's Yellow Challenge Roll Call - Who's In?

The first ride dropped today, and that 30 minute tabata was too intimidating to do before work on a Monday filled with meetings. Tomorrow it is! Who's taken it already?
