There has been some general interest in a Discord server to pair with the sub. Zig and I have mulled it over and are down to give it a trial run. We'd like to keep it the same general vibe as the sub, which means its chill and not overly structured. There are some channels defined just to provide a bit of organization. Otherwise the plan is to let you guys do your thing.

We, the Overlords Mod Team, have received a serious set of allegations against the sub and feel it's important for us to address the concern transparently with you, our minions members.  

First Concern: For a group that claims to be uncensored, the fact that you have rules is disingenuous. When will you stop the tyranny? 

Official Moderator Policy Response: We lie awake in our beds, every night, pondering this exact question. Unfortunately censorship is a burden we must bear for the foreseeable future, there is simply no way around it. Reddit has an entirely unreasonable document called a Mod Code of Conduct and they, apparently, expect us to publish community rules in the sidebar and then, also, enforce rules we ourselves wrote. 

Frankly, it's suffocating.  

We agree, we shouldn’t have ever made that rule about being civil to other users. It was an unforgivable lapse in judgment on our part. And now? We’re all stuck maintaining some basic standard of politeness no sane person would ever have wanted to exist in the first place. 

Second Concern: Change the name of the group! You need to practice what you preach, people, because words have definitions. Its morally wrong to say you are uncensored, and then tell me its actually only true "within the framework the rules establish." 

Official Moderator Policy Response: The name change idea is excellent, and we looked into it immediately. Our hearts were crushed when Reddit, once again, placed its boot firmly upon the neck of our self-expression. Apparently once you create a subreddit, you can’t simply rename it because the existing name has become comedically inconvenient. 

We therefore invite all users to imagine a strikethrough when looking at the sub name, like so: r/DramioneUncensored. 

We trust this has resolved the matter. 

Third Concern: The mods of this sub clearly play favorites. I tried to call someone a fascist once and another user told me I should ‘calm down’. Obviously I reported that users comment, only for the Mods to action ME (I saved screenshots of all of this, in a folder called ‘Evidence’). Also that other user is still here. Posting. Like, as much as they want. That shouldn’t be allowed. 

Official Moderator Policy Response: We’ve been caught. It has everything to do with favoritism and nothing at all, in the slightest, to do with how the user reacted when we pulled our “Oi, mate, wand down” tyrant mod action move on them. Still, we dream of a future where all rules are read and understood up front by everyone (because mod actions are actually very inconvenient for us). 

Until that glorious day arrives, the rampant abuse of our censorship powers will, regrettably, continue to fester in this hellish corner of Reddit we call home and we’ll have to find a way to bravely soldier on.

Today I worked to expand my horizons by joining an incredibly thought-provoking, feminist discussion against dark romance and the word ‘taught’, wherein it was stated that all literature in the genre relies exclusively on female subjugation. 

Which is a terrible oversight. OP has clearly never read drarry, tomarry, wolfstar, snarry, or a single inverted Handmaids tale. 

I tried to help. 

My gentle explanation clarified that some of us are out here, fighting the good fight by eroticizing male loss of power with the same degree of shameless filth we employ when writing female loss of power tropes. 

Now I’ve been banned forever from the progressive perspectives conversation space! Maybe I should have explained that, as the mod of r/deaddove, I'm highly qualified to weigh in on the topic? I don't know, I'm at a loss.

Can you please send me some good recs with these vibes? I’m going to need some comfort reading and ice cream whilst tending to my broken heart.

We all know you are still the guilty party, but let’s talk about it anyway.

What rules have you, dearest degenerates of Reddit, broken to the terrible extent that got you mod-actioned? Doesn’t matter if it was premeditated or you walked right into it like I did that wall in the very dark movie theater when I was eleven. Yes, my sibling still laughs every time it comes up, thank you very much.  

Now, it goes without saying that you obviously weren’t mod actioned here, because we are Uncensored and that means us mods mostly exist to make ourselves feel important. Or to deal with the really, really dumb cases. Picture some crazy person bursting into the comments with a screaming ‘FASCISTS DEVIL WORSHIPERS!!’ while we’re trying to debate the pros and cons of sex on a broom between our two favorite lovers. Or, you know, I guess there is some boring housekeeping that keeps the place tidy. 

But mostly the feeling important thing. 

Alright, fine. I guess you can share how we’ve mod-actioned you too. Doesn’t have to be us, though. Could be anywhere on this godforsaken platform where you walked in with a glorious idea, confidently hit POST, and were promptly informed by the authorities that it was absolutely not fecking okay.

Do try and make the story funny. I don’t actually want to hear about your real drama, just the entertaining stuff. So no naming subs, please, and definitely no sharing other user names. You CAN name the mod though, but only if the mod was yours truly.

Hello fellow consumers of things you were very specifically warned not to open. Over the coming days, I’ll be working to establish rules, flairs, fun things, and all the boring moderator stuff that happens on the back end to get this space up and running again.

For those who don’t know, Dead Dove: Do Not Eat was adopted heavily by fanfiction writers as shorthand for the tags mean what they say. It has since grown into a broader umbrella for dark and taboo fiction in general. Which, as it turns out, quite a lot of us love.

This sub will be a space to rec the dead dove you’ve been reading, writing, dreaming about, or laughing at (yes, we should poke fun at it too. If we’re going to read about unspeakable horrors, we’re allowed to make memes about it.) Fanfiction, trad pub, web novels, and other forms of publishing are all welcome. 

You can also come here to ask the internet if anyone remembers that one dead dove you read three years ago where there was a guy in a mask, something about stalking, and absolutely no other useful information. Someone might know which one you mean (miracles happen on Reddit). 

The place is still being exhumed, so expect things to move around a bit while I get everything established. In the meantime feel free to post. If anything wildly off base comes up I’ll use the nuke button and we can chat in modmail 💛

Couple of questions on this fine Monday.

What draws you to fests? As a reader, a writer, or (the bravest of the brave) a host?

Personally, writing on a deadline makes me so stressed! I love it when it’s a tiny, interpersonal kind of deadline (to avoid the friendly badgering of my fandom besties, whom I love), but probably get more daunted than I should by an actual ticking timer.

I know there are lots of folks who thrive on these things. If that's you, is it because the deadline keeps you motivated? The structured approach (set prompts, word count, that kind of thing)? Also, do you prefer fests that are a little bit competitive (voting, prizes, etc) or something more chill?

For those who are readers and not writers, what draws you to following fests over your standard AO3 tag search? 

Lasty, does anyone have any funny fest horror stories? Don’t be shy, laugh the pain away with us 💛

I'm personally not sure if I'd classify either as a real dead dove, but I keep seeing them pop up in dark fiction recs so I'm guessing they are? Lights Out (to me) felt pretty tame by the end. I didn't finish Haunting Adeline, but got to the point where it felt like the author was shifting the narrative to give the MMC a sympathetic backstory and basically an "out" for being a bad guy.

What say you?

My definition of short is really anything under 50,000.

Writers, I'm curious what your policies are, and why.

This week I created a collection for our Best of 2026 event, and invited the standout works to it so that anyone who accepts gets a pretty little "✨ Best of 2026 Awards Standout Work ✨" added to their fic. As I went through the list I noticed roughly half of all fics have the invite to collections feature turned off. Some writers have it enabled for some of their fics, and disabled for others. One writer I chatted with didn't know it was turned off.

It made me curious, whats the lore on the Collections feature, and what drives the preferences?

To anyone with a standout work from the event who has not gotten an invite, its because this was turned off on your fic. If you would like to be added simply change the setting and shoot us a modmail note so I can send you an invite :)

I'm (slowly) starting to reach out to related communities, and I'm excited to introduce our very first sister sub, r/tomionefics!

For the uninitiated, Tomione is part of the Harry Potter fanfic universe and pairs Tom Riddle + Hermione Granger.

The inclusion of Tom Riddle is, frankly, a warning label all its own. So (unsurprisingly) the Tomione fandom has a healthy appreciation for all things Dead Dove.

I’m excited to have them as our first sister community and looking forward to growing our little corner of the darkfic universe together!

I'm obviously asking for a friend, okay? Put down your pitchforks.

My friend is a writer (also illiterate, if that helps) and wants to write an FMC who is similar to herself. Given that the bulk of the readers of this fictional work would be literate, however, it seems a bit... classist. That's just my personal opinion (I am usually right, though).

I tried explaining to her that writing an illiterate character for a literate audience creates an obvious power imbalance. At this point I'm concerned the only ethical solution is to remove all written words from the book entirely.

WIBTAH if I told her to publish 437 blank pages, or shift it to a picture book instead?

I'm reading a fic I saw linked in r/DarkRomance (at least I'm pretty sure that's where I found it) and my gosh, it hit all the things. Kidnapping, check. A bit of un-aliving, check. He's possessive, controlling, and should be in therapy, check.

Then I got to thinking how crazy would I actually sound if I tried to describe this fic to anyone? "She's terrified and cries, but he's so sweet and soothing while he explains he's never letting her go." Like, what? That’s not actually a tender moment... but somehow it is. 

How would you guys describe your favorite dark fic? Does the dark stuff make the fluffy feel even fluffier for you?

As you might have noticed, our sub turned one year old last month! 🍾🥂🎉 We’ve also welcomed quite a few new faces lately, so it seemed like a good time for a community check in. This space belongs to all of us, so we want to hear what you think.

What’s working? What isn’t? Is there something you’d like to see more (or less) of? Ideas for recurring posts, events, rules, resources, community features, or general improvements? Things that annoy the last ever-loving avada out of you?

We can’t promise we’ll implement every suggestion (the reality is there may be things that just aren't workable on our end). We can promise that we’ll read every post and comment and give serious consideration to what you all have to say.

Remember how I checked 5,000 fics for the Claude skin? When they started flagged I took a deeper dive into those works, and found a few other clear fragments (not in the existing Claude skin logic). Separate from that, another user ran a similar check across 9,000 fics and identified new fragments of their own.

No, that user also does not plan to publish their list of flagged fics either. We did discuss them together and their list does overlap heavily with mine, but gave new examples too.

We agree the existing Claude skin disturbs us though. The tone it sets speaks louder than any disclaimers posted with it.

Which is why I made Claude Skin 2.0, and am sharing it for your personal use only.

It still checks for Claude, but it also checks for more (including photo artifacts), and runs in dark mode so the reading experience is friendly on your eyes. Some fragments found were heavily associated with AI but we couldn't rule out the possibility they could also be generated by existing (non-AI) writing tools. Those fragments were excluded from the code. If the code does flag a fic, its accurate.

The skin is posted to my Google drive here. I've included a terms of use, set up steps, a tab with the code itself, as well as a link to the Heated Rivalry AI demonstration fic so you can be certain the code works after installing it.

Yes, I'm still conflicted about posting this. After much thought, I do believe the Claude skin needs to be replaced. In reality the new fragments did expand on the count of AI works, but not heavily so. If that skin didn't exist in the problematic way it does, I wouldn't be posting this one. The way I built it makes it harder to name and shame fics found, so it needed to deliver more than the other one for people to be willing to use it, in light of the constraints mine has on callout use.

I may continue to enhance this skin as new fragments are found, but that really comes down to what I see in terms of community behavior.
